Background: Modern techniques in lower extremity amputation have made significant advances to improve prosthetic control and soft-tissue envelopes through various techniques, including medial thighplasties. These advances are necessary to enhance the fit and functionality of the prosthesis in transfemoral amputations.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all thighplasties performed at our institution in patients with ipsilateral transfemoral amputation from November 2017 to December 2021.

Early Palliative Care Following Aborted Cancer Surgery: Results of a Prospective Feasibility Trial.

Background: Although resection is generally necessary for curative-intent treatment of most solid organ cancers, surgery is occasionally aborted due to intraoperative findings. Following aborted cancer surgery, patients have unique care needs that specialized palliative care (PC) providers may be best equipped to manage. We hypothesized that early ambulatory PC referral following aborted cancer surgery would be feasible and acceptable.

Methods: In this study, we used a supervised machine learning technique to build a model of functional connections that predicts cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) p-tau/Aβ (the PATH-fc model). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 289 older adults in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were utilized for this model.

Non-invasive removal of a misplaced and knotted guidewire during ultrasound-guided central venous catheter insertion in a hybrid operating room: a case report.

Background: The standard of care for placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) includes a real-time ultrasound (US)-guided technique. We describe a rare case in which the guidewire penetrated the posterior wall of the vessel, forming a knot, which precluded simple removal. This occurred despite the procedure being performed under real-time US guidance.

Lupus nephritis randomised controlled trials: evidence gaps and under-represented groups.

Objective: We performed a scoping review of randomised clinical trials (RCTs) assessing pharmacological therapies for the initial management of lupus nephritis (LN), focusing on study design, included populations and outcome definitions, to assess the generalisability of their results and identify gaps in the evidence.

Methods: RCTs evaluating pharmacological interventions for the initial therapy of LN published between 2000 and 2024 were evaluated. Extracted variables included study design, selection criteria, outcome definitions, populations recruited and clinical characteristics of participants.

As the healthcare burden caused by an increasingly aging population rapidly rises, a pressing need exists for innovative geroscience research that can elucidate aging mechanisms and precipitate the development of therapeutic interventions to support healthy aging. The Fifth Annual Midwest Aging Consortium Aging Research symposium, held from April 28-30, 2024, was hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and featured presentations from investigators across the Midwestern United States. This report summarizes the research presented at the symposium, whose topics included cellular senescence and the aging brain, metabolism and metabolic interventions, nutrition, redox mechanisms and biomarkers, and stress mechanisms.
