Background: Previous studies suggest the relationship between activation time (AT) and action potential duration (APD) in the heart is dependent on electrotonic coupling, but this has not been directly tested. This study assessed whether acute changes in electrical coupling, or other determinants of conduction or repolarization, modulate APD heterogeneity.
Methods And Results: Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts were epicardially paced and optically mapped after treatment with the gap junction uncoupler carbenoxolone, ephaptic uncoupler mannitol, ephaptic enhancer dextran 2MDa, sodium channel inhibitor flecainide, or rapid component of the delayed rectifier potassium channel inhibitor E4031.
Objective: Nasal surgery can improve patient-reported obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) outcomes as well as adherence with medical device treatments. The aim of this study was to examine whether previous nasal surgery was associated with hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) therapy outcomes.
Study Design: Retrospective observational cohort study was performed utilizing the multicenter international HNS registry (ADHERE).

Catalytic reaction networks of multiple elementary steps operating under dynamic conditions a programmed input oscillation are difficult to interpret and optimize due to reaction system complexity. To understand these dynamic systems, individual elementary catalytic reactions oscillating between catalyst states were evaluated to identify their three fundamental characteristics that define their ability to promote reactions away from equilibrium. First, elementary catalytic reactions exhibit directionality to promote reactions forward or backward from equilibrium as determined by a ratchet directionality metric comprised of the input oscillation duty cycle and the reaction rate constants.

Background: Both cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Although our previous study detected a relationship between CVD and cancer incidence, limited evidence is available regarding the relationship between CVD, cardiovascular risk factors, and cancer mortality.
Methods And Results: A prospective cohort study using data from the continuous NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2016) merged with Medicare and National Death Index mortality data, through December 31, 2018.
Background: Hypertension is a stroke risk factor with known disparities in prevalence and management between Black and White patients. We sought to identify if racial differences in presenting blood pressure (BP) during acute ischemic stroke exist.
Methods And Results: Adults with acute ischemic stroke presenting to an emergency department within 24 hours of last known normal during study epochs 2005, 2010, and 2015 within the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Study were included.

The nickel-iron carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme uses a heterometallic nickel-iron-sulfur ([NiFeS]) cluster to catalyze the reversible interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO) and carbon monoxide (CO). These reactions are essential for maintaining the global carbon cycle and offer a route towards sustainable greenhouse gas conversion but have not been successfully replicated in synthetic models, in part due to a poor understanding of the natural system. Though the general protein architecture of CODH is known, the electronic structure of the active site is not well-understood, and the mechanism of catalysis remains unresolved.

In response to societal developments and the growing demand for high-energy-density battery systems, alkali metal batteries (AMBs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage. Despite their high theoretical specific capacity and output voltage, AMBs face critical challenges related to high reactivity with electrolytes and unstable interphases. This review, from the perspective of electrolytes, analyzes AMB failure mechanisms, including interfacial side reactions, active materials loss, and metal dendrite growth.

Background: Higher scores for the American Heart Association Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, sleep, and diet, are associated with lower risk of chronic disease. Socioeconomic status (SES; employment, insurance, education, and income) is associated with LE8 scores, but there is limited understanding of potential differences by sex. This analysis quantifies the association of SES with LE8 for each sex, within Hispanic Americans, non-Hispanic Asian Americans, non-Hispanic Black Americans, and non-Hispanic White Americans.

Alpha distensibility coefficient is determined from a nonlinear fit to multipoint pressure-flow plots. Study aims were to (1) create and test a user-friendly tool to standardize analysis of exercise hemodynamics including distensibility, and (2) investigate changes in distensibility following treatment in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Background The American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) are 8 risk factors for cardiovascular disease, with poor attainment across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Attainment is lowest among Americans of low socioeconomic status (SES). Evidence suggests the association of SES with LE8 may vary by race and ethnicity.

The methods for describing cardiac phenotypes in patients with CMA abnormalities have been inconsistent, which may complicate clinical interpretation of abnormal testing results and hinder a more complete understanding of genotype-phenotype relationships. Methods and Results Patients with CHD and abnormal clinical CMA were accrued from 9 pediatric cardiac centers.

Investigations of the parallel architectures of biomotors in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems suggest a similar revolving mechanism in the use of ATP to drive translocation of the lengthy double-stranded (ds)DNA genomes. This mechanism is exemplified by the dsDNA packaging motor of bacteriophage phi29 that operates through revolving but not rotating dsDNA to "Push through a one-way valve". This unique and novel revolving mechanism discovered in phi29 DNA packaging motor was recently reported in other systems including the dsDNA packaging motor of herpesvirus, the dsDNA ejecting motor of bacteriophage T7, the plasmid conjugation machine TraB in , the dsDNA translocase FtsK of gram-negative bacteria, and the genome-packaging motor in mimivirus.

We determined correlation coefficients between annual disease incidence per 100,000 people among states within the Great Plains Region, as well as the Central Flyway. There was spatial and temporal synchronicity, as evidenced by Pearson "," with values along the core of the Central Flyway (Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota) varying between 0.

Remotely sensed inundation may help to rapidly identify areas in need of aid during and following floods. Here we evaluate the utility of daily remotely sensed flood inundation measures and estimate their congruence with self-reported home flooding and health outcomes collected via the Texas Flood Registry (TFR) following Hurricane Harvey. Daily flood inundation for 14 days following the landfall of Hurricane Harvey was acquired from FloodScan.

Whether this association exists for women who experience hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is unknown. The authors examined whether breastfeeding duration or exclusivity are associated with long-term cardiometabolic health, and whether this relationship differs by HDP status.
