Objective: The association between alcohol consumption and increased injuries from falls is well established, but there is a lack of data on the prevalence of substance use by fall type. This study aims to describe the distribution of alcohol and drug involvement in injurious falls.
Methods: Using the 2019 National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Information System data set, we identified 1 854 909 patients injured from falls requiring an EMS response and determined the fall location (eg, indoors or on street/sidewalk).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: In light of evolving evidence that some patients with node-positive estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) disease may receive less benefit from chemotherapy, this study reports 12-year outcomes of the C9741 trial overall, and by the sensitivity to endocrine therapy (SET2,3) test index, a biomarker measuring endocrine transcriptional activity, to identify patients most likely to benefit from dose-dense chemotherapy.
Methods: In all, 1,973 patients were randomly assigned to dose-dense versus conventional chemotherapy. Hazard ratios (HRs) for prognosis and for predictive interaction with chemotherapy schedule were estimated from Cox models of long-term disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Fragment-based quantum chemistry methods offer a means to sidestep the steep nonlinear scaling of electronic structure calculations so that large molecular systems can be investigated using high-level methods. Here, we use fragmentation to compute protein-ligand interaction energies in systems with several thousand atoms, using a new software platform for managing fragment-based calculations that implements a screened many-body expansion. Convergence tests using a minimal-basis semiempirical method (HF-3c) indicate that two-body calculations, with single-residue fragments and simple hydrogen caps, are sufficient to reproduce interaction energies obtained using conventional supramolecular electronic structure calculations, to within 1 kcal/mol at about 1% of the computational cost.

Cytoglobin (Cygb) regulates vascular tone by modulating nitric oxide (NO) metabolism in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In the presence of its cytochrome B5a (B5)/B5 reductase-isoform-3 (B5R) reducing system, Cygb controls NO metabolism via oxygen-dependent NO dioxygenation. Electronic cigarette (EC) use has been shown to induce vascular dysfunction and decrease NO bioavailability; however, the role of Cygb-mediated NO metabolism in the pathophysiology of this process has not been previously investigated.

The present study examined the efficacy of a comprehensive housing intervention (Ecologically-Based Treatment - temporary housing and supportive services) on the longitudinal co-occurring patterns of housing stability, employment, and survival behaviors among a sample of young mothers experiencing homelessness.
