Background: Emerging evidence supporting the use of valaciclovir to reduce fetal infection after maternal primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has stimulated interest in routine CMV serological screening in pregnancy. It is important to understand the healthcare consumer perspective of a CMV infection during pregnancy to minimize unintended harms of screening.

Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with Australian women who had a lived experience of CMV infection following serological testing during pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a growing interest in using historical patient data as synthetic controls for evaluating new drugs, but real-world outcomes often don't match those from clinical trials due to a lack of detailed cancer treatment data.
  • The Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group's National Blood Cancer Registry (ALLG NBCR) provides comprehensive information on various factors influencing treatment outcomes, allowing for a comparison of 942 AML patients to clinical trial data for five specific drugs.
  • The analysis reveals significant differences in treatment approaches and outcomes between real-world patients and clinical trial participants, indicating that while some results may align, discrepancies must be considered for accurately assessing the effectiveness of new therapies across different populations.

December 2023

Personalised Oncology Division, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Parkville, VIC 3052, Australia; Department of Medical Biology, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, VIC 3052, Australia; Department of Surgery, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, VIC 3050, Australia; Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Monash University, Clayton, VIC 3800, Australia. Electronic address:

Predictive drug testing of patient-derived tumor organoids (PDTOs) holds promise for personalizing treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), but prospective data are limited to chemotherapy regimens with conflicting results. We describe a unified framework for PDTO-based predictive testing across standard-of-care chemotherapy and biologic and targeted therapy options. In an Australian community cohort, PDTO predictions based on treatment-naive patients (n = 56) and response rates from first-line mCRC clinical trials achieve 83% accuracy for forecasting responses in patients receiving palliative treatments (18 patients, 29 treatments).
