Introduction: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is an acquired rare disease manifested by hypophosphatemic osteomalacia due to excessive secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). FGF 23 is a non-classical hormone secreted by bone tissue (osteocytes) and regulates phosphorus metabolism. The aim of this work is to present clinical experience in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

The DYSF gene encoding dysferlin protein is one of the largest and has many transcripts. Pathogenic variants in the gene can lead to various types of myopathies, which makes it a good object for studying the events occurring in it during genome editing by the CRISPR/Cas method. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of permanent skipping of exons 3-4, and 26-27 which deletion does not violate the reading frame and allows to eliminate truncated variants within exons.

Landouzy-Dejerine myopathy (Facial-shoulder-shoulder myodystrophy) is a disease which causes weakness of the muscles of the shoulder girdle, back and hip muscles, which predisposes patients to an increased risk of injury and disability. The article presents a clinical observation of non-ischemic priapism, which developed as a result of perineal trauma with the formation of a fistula of the right cavernous body in a patient against the background of facial shoulder-shoulder myodystrophy. Methods for the differential diagnosis of this condition are also discussed.

Background & Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of LT-02, a novel modified-release phosphatidylcholine (PC) formulation, for induction and maintenance of remission in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) and inadequate response to mesalamine.

Methods: LT-02 was evaluated in a multicenter double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study comprising a 12-week induction trial (PCG-2), followed by a 48-week maintenance trial (PCG-4). In PCG-2, patients were randomized 1:1:1 to treatment with 0.

The microRNA (miR) species analyzed in this study are involved in molecular mechanisms of TLR4 and TLR7 signaling, mediating the development of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. We have investigated the expression levels of miR-let7b, miR-96, miR-182, miR-155, and the mRNA content of HMGB1, TLR3, TLR4 in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of the brain of rats exposed to long-term alcoholization. The long-term alcoholization caused a decrease in miR-let7b, miR-96, miR-182, and TLR7 mRNA levels; this was accompanied by an increase in miR-155, TLR4, and Hmgb1 mRNA levels in the NAc of rat brain.

Ethanol causes long-term changes in the toll-like receptor (TLR) system, promoting activation of neuroinflammation pathways. Alcohol use during pregnancy causes neuroinflammatory processes in the fetus; this can lead to the development of symptoms of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Our study has shown that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) induced long-term changes in the TLR system genes (Tlr3, Tlr4, Ticam, Hmgb1, cytokine genes) in the forebrain cortex of rat pups.

Determination of "borderline resectable" pancreatic cancer - A global assessment of 30 shades of grey.

HPB (Oxford)

November 2023

Department of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia; Department of Surgery, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; Monash Health, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a serious cancer where accurately assessing resectability through CT scans is essential for determining the best treatment options for patients.
  • In a study involving 96 clinicians, it was found that there was significant variability in how different surgeons and radiologists agreed on the resectability of pancreatic tumors based on CT scans.
  • The results highlighted a fair overall agreement score of 0.32, with radiologists demonstrating better consistency than surgeons, indicating a need for more standardized assessment processes and central reviews in future treatments and studies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on dysferlinopathy in an isolated Avar population in Dagestan, examining the prevalence of a specific pathological DYSF gene variant linked to muscular dystrophy, using genetic screenings of 746 individuals.
  • - Findings revealed a high allele frequency of 14%, with a notable 3.8% of individuals homozygous for the variant, leading to two phenotypes: limb-girdle muscular dystrophy and Miyoshi muscular dystrophy.
  • - The research concluded that inbreeding contributed to the population's significant burden of dysferlinopathy, indicated by a low number of heterozygotes and a specific fixation index value.

OXA-48 carbapenemases are frequently expressed by Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates; they decrease the effectiveness of carbapenem therapy, particularly with meropenem. Among these isolates, meropenem-susceptible carbapenemase-producers may show decreased meropenem effectiveness. However, the probability of the emergence of resistance in susceptible carbapenemase-producing isolates and its dependence on specific K.
