Purpose: The TAOK proteins are a group of serine/threonine-protein kinases involved in signalling pathways, cytoskeleton regulation, and neuronal development. TAOK1 variants are associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) characterized by distinctive facial features, hypotonia and feeding difficulties. TAOK2 variants have been reported to be associated with autism and early-onset obesity.

Mixed-methods process evaluation of a proactive approach to healthcare in Parkinson's disease-ParkProReakt: a protocol of a hybrid efficacy-implementation study.

Introduction: People with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) experience a wide range of motor and non-motor symptoms that have a significant impact on their health and quality of life. Effective care management for PwPD involves monitoring symptoms at home, involving specialised multidisciplinary care providers and enhancing self-management skills. This study protocol describes the process evaluation within a randomised clinical trial to assess the implementation and its impact on patient health outcomes of ParkProReakt-a proactive, multidisciplinary, digitally supported care model for community-dwelling PwPD.

Re-scoping ultradian rhythms in the context of metabolism.

Rapid, ultradian biological rhythms are only partly comparable to circadian (24-h) rhythms. Often, the ensuing expectations from this comparison are that 1) ultradian rhythms should be driven by discrete oscillators, 2) they are biochemically buffered, and 3) they must be functionally linked to extrinsic events and cycles. These three expectations are not always met, but perhaps there is an adaptive benefit to ultradian rhythms not meeting these expectations, which sets them functionally apart from circadian rhythms.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global health, especially in vulnerable populations like kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Recently, mass spectrometry-based proteomics has emerged as a powerful tool to shed light on a broad spectrum of dysregulated biological processes in KTRs with COVID-19. In this study, we prospectively collected blood samples from 17 COVID-19-positive KTRs and 10 non-infected KTRs between May and September 2020.

Surgical navigation for targeted retroperitoneal lymph-node removal: a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial.

Background: Metastatic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (LND) for nodal recurrence is applied for a variety of cancers, such as urological, gynaecological and rectal cancer. Precise localisation and resection of these lymph nodes (LNs) during surgery can be challenging, especially after previous radiotherapy or surgery. The objective of this study was to assess the added value of surgical navigation for targeted LND in the retroperitoneum.

Introduction: Low atrial voltage and slow conduction velocity (CV) have been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF); however, their interaction and relative importance as early disease markers remain incompletely understood. However, the lack of data on prescribing trends in initial pharmacotherapy in primary care hinders the understanding of how scientific and technical developments impact patient care and may also perpetuate suboptimal practices. Hence, this study aims to analyze trends in the initial pharmacological treatment of newly diagnosed COPD patients in Dutch primary care from 2010 to 2021.

Limited use of opioid prescribing guidelines in Dutch emergency departments: results of a nationwide survey.

Background: In recent years, the Netherlands has experienced a notable increase in opioid prescriptions and associated fatalities. Emergency department (ED) patients exhibit relatively high rates of opioid use (15%) and misuse (23% of patients who present to the ED and use prescription opioids test positive for misuse). To mitigate opioid-related harm, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) advocates for the use of non-opioid analgesics and minimal opioid prescriptions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) models may fail or suffer from reduced performance when applied to unseen data that differs from the training data distribution, referred to as dataset shift. Automatic detection of out-of-distribution (OOD) data contributes to safe and reliable clinical implementation of AI models. In this study, we propose a recognized OOD detection method that utilizes the Mahalanobis distance (MD) and compare its performance to widely known classical methods.

Background: Social frailty has been increasingly prevalent due to the aging populations. This concept is a relatively new topic in the gerontology. Older adults experiencing social isolation because of social frailty remain in a state of loneliness or depression.

In-stent restenosis represents a major cause of failure of percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stent implantation. Computational multiscale models have recently emerged as powerful tools for investigating the mechanobiological mechanisms underlying vascular adaptation processes during in-stent restenosis. However, to date, the interplay between intervention-induced inflammation, drug delivery and drug retention has been under-investigated.
