Unlabelled: Knowledge about trends and epidemiology of pediatric burns is useful to identify patterns, to advance medical research, and to design prevention programs and resource allocation. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology and trends of pediatric burns between 2009 and 2022 in the three Dutch burn centers. A secondary objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the pattern of pediatric burns.

How and where Effectively Apply Cerebellum Stimulation: The frequency-dependent Modulation of Cerebellar Output by Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

As brain-machine interfaces (BMI) are growingly used in clinical settings, understanding how to apply brain stimulation is increasingly important. Despite the emergence of optogenetic techniques, ethical and medical concerns suggest that interventions that are safe and non-invasive, such as Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS), are more likely to be employed in human in the near future. Consequently, the question of how and where to apply current stimulation is becoming increasingly important for the efficient neuromodulation of both neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Analysis of Antroduodenal Motility in Patients With Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders/Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) are frequently associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to compare antroduodenal motility in patients with and without HSD/hEDS. We included 239 patients (50 HSD/hEDS and 189 non-HSD/hEDS) with gastrointestinal symptoms undergoing antroduodenal manometry (ADM).

Interlaboratory assays from the fungal PCR Initiative and the Modimucor Study Group to improve qPCR detection of Mucorales DNA in serum: one more step toward standardization.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to identify parameters influencing DNA extraction and PCR amplification efficiencies in an attempt to standardize Mucorales qPCR. The Fungal PCR Initiative Mucorales Laboratory Working Group distributed two panels of simulated samples to 26 laboratories: Panel A (six sera spiked with Mucorales DNA and one negative control serum) and Panel B (six Mucorales DNA extracts). Panel A underwent DNA extraction in each laboratory according to the local procedure and were sent to a central laboratory for testing using three different qPCR techniques: one in-house qPCR assay and two commercial assays (MucorGenius and Fungiplex).

Identification and characterization of prophages rich in diversity-generating retroelements.

Metagenomics has revealed the incredible diversity of phages within the human gut. However, very few of these phages have been subjected to in-depth experimental characterization. One promising method of obtaining novel phages for experimental characterization is through induction of the prophages integrated into the genomes of cultured gut bacteria.

Systolic Blood Pressure and Pulse Pressure in Heart Failure: Pooled Participant-Level Analysis of 4 Trials.

Background: Hypertension is common in patients with heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction (HFmrEF/HFpEF), and current guidelines recommend treating systolic blood pressure (SBP) to a target <130 mm Hg. However, data supporting treatment to this target are limited. Additionally, pulse pressure (PP), a marker of aortic stiffness, has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, but its prognostic impact in HFpEF has not been extensively studied.

As the number of coronavirus diseases-2019 (COVID-19) cases have decreased and measures have started to be implemented at an individual level rather than in the form of social restrictions, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) still maintains its importance and has already taken its place in the spectrum of agents investigated in multiplex molecular test panels for respiratory tract infections in routine diagnostic use. In this study, we aimed to present mutation analysis and clade distribution of whole genome sequences from randomly selected samples that tested positive with SARS-CoV-2 specific real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test at different periods of the pandemic in our laboratory with a commercial easy-to-use kit designed for next-generation sequencing systems. A total of 84 nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab samples of COVID-19 suspected patients which were sent for routine diagnosis to the medical microbiology laboratory and detected as SARSCoV-2 RNA positive with rRT-PCR were randomly selected from different periods for sequence analysis.

In this study we evaluate the performance of novices in ESD during their one-year training period; with continuous supervision of an endoscopist with extensive experience in ESD.

Understanding Noninferiority Trials: What Stroke Specialists Should Know.

Noninferiority trials aim to prove that the efficacy, defined in terms of a key clinical outcome, of a new treatment is not meaningfully worse than that of an established active control. Noninferiority trials are important when other aspects of care can be improved, such as convenience, toxicity, costs, and safety (nonefficacy benefits). While the motivation for a noninferiority trial is straightforward, the design, execution, and interpretation of these trials is not a trivial task.

A Pollen-Based Assisted Migration for Rapid Forest Adaptation.

Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to forest ecosystems, necessitating innovative adaptation strategies. ESAIC focused guidelines for the management of the failing epidural during labour epidural analgesia.

Background: Labour epidural analgesia reportedly fails in up to 10 to 25% of cases. A joint taskforce of European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) experts was created to develop this focused guideline on the management of failing epidural analgesia in a previously well functioning epidural catheter.

Impact of COVID-19, lockdowns and vaccination on immune responses in a HIV cohort in the Netherlands.

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, major events with immune-modulating effects at population-level included COVID-19 infection, lockdowns, and mass vaccinations campaigns. As immune responses influence many immune-mediated diseases, population scale immunological changes may have broad consequences.

Methods: We investigated the impact of lockdowns, COVID-19 infection and vaccinations on immune responses in the 2000HIV study including 1895 asymptomatic virally-suppressed people living with HIV recruited between October 2019 and October 2021.

This article discusses conceptual frameworks in neurology education research. We provide practical case examples highlighting the conceptual framework development process for different research scenarios in neurology education. We explore the steps that shape the conceptual framework process, including defining the educational problem, exploring the scholarly conversation on the topic of study through understanding the literature and outlining its gaps, constructing research questions, selecting the theoretical frameworks that underpin the study, and choosing the appropriate methodology and methods for the research questions.

Gene expression profiling in PBMCs for acute rejection in lung transplant recipients reveals myeloid responses.

The acute rejection (AR) diagnosis depends on transbronchial biopsy, which is semi-invasive and not easily performed Our study used the Nanostring gene expression technology on PBMCs obtained from lung transplant recipients (LTRs) to search for biomarkers. We identified distinct differential gene profiles between patients with stable status (STA) and AR. Subsequently, we independently evaluated monocyte compositions in PBMCs using flow cytometry and assessed the levels of 7 chemokines in serum using Luminex.

Augmenting visual feedback with visualized interaction forces in haptic-assisted virtual-reality teleoperation.

In recent years, providing additional visual feedback about the interaction forces has been found to offer benefits to haptic-assisted teleoperation. However, there is limited insight into the effects of the design of force feedback-related visual cues and the type of visual display on the performance of teleoperation of robotic arms executing industrial tasks. In this study, we provide new insights into this interaction by extending these findings to the haptic assistance teleoperation of a simulated robotic arm in a virtual environment, in which the haptic assistance is comprised of a set of virtual fixtures.

Long-term trends in educational inequalities in alcohol-attributable mortality, and their impact on trends in educational inequalities in life expectancy.

Background: Previous studies on socio-economic inequalities in mortality have documented a substantial contribution of alcohol-attributable mortality (AAM) to these inequalities. However, little is known about the extent to which AAM has contributed to time trends in socio-economic inequalities in mortality.

Objective: To study long-term trends in educational inequalities in AAM and assessed their impact on trends in educational inequalities in life expectancy in three European countries.

Prolonged fecal shedding of replication-competent virus, lasting immune activation, and intestinal inflammation in a rhesus macaque after experimental SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Infection of an adult rhesus macaque with SARS-CoV-2 led to viral RNAemia in nose, throat, and lungs. The animal also presented extended fecal shedding of viral genomic and subgenomic messenger RNA and replication-competent virus for more than 3 weeks after infection. Positron emission tomography revealed increased intestinal glucose metabolism which was histologically related to inflammation of the ileum.
