High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Institute of Physics, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland.

A search for violation of the charge-parity (CP) symmetry in the D^{+}→K^{-}K^{+}π^{+} decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb^{-1}, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the D^{+} and D^{-} phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the D_{s}^{+}→K^{-}K^{+}π^{+} decay as a control channel.

Interfacial Dripping Faucet: Generating Monodisperse Liquid Lenses.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Carlos III University of Madrid, Thermal and Fluids Engineering Department, Avenida de la Universidad, 30 (Sabatini building), 28911 Leganés (Madrid), Spain.

We present a surface analog to a dripping faucet, where a viscous liquid slides down an immiscible meniscus. Periodic pinch-off of the dripping filament is observed, generating a succession of monodisperse floating lenses. We show that this interfacial dripping faucet can be described analogously to its single-phase counterpart, replacing surface tension by the spreading coefficient, and even undergoes a transition to a jetting regime.

K.M.J.M.H. Lombarts is professor, Professional Performance & Compassionate Care Research Group, Department of Medical Psychology, Amsterdam University Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, and researcher, Quality of Care Program, Amsterdam Public Health Research Institute, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Purpose: Cultures of wellness, defined as shared norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors that promote personal and professional growth and well-being, are robust determinants of professional fulfillment and professional performance. A major and largely overlooked aspect of a culture of wellness in medicine is residents' perceived appreciation or experience of feeling valued. Considering the pressing workforce and retention challenges that residency programs face, this study addressed the following research questions: How does appreciation at work manifest in the eyes of residents and how do residents perceive appreciation in relation to their professional fulfillment and performance?

Method: Guided by an interpretative phenomenological approach, this qualitative study purposively sampled 12 residents from different specialties, training years, regions in the Netherlands, and genders.

We study image segmentation using spatiotemporal dynamics in a recurrent neural network where the state of each unit is given by a complex number. We show that this network generates sophisticated spatiotemporal dynamics that can effectively divide an image into groups according to a scene's structural characteristics. We then demonstrate a simple algorithm for object segmentation that generalizes across inputs ranging from simple geometric objects in grayscale images to natural images.

Fast exact gap-affine partial order alignment with POASTA.

Bioinformatics

January 2025

Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program, Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Cambridge, MA 02142, United States.

Motivation: Partial order alignment is a widely used method for computing multiple sequence alignments, with applications in genome assembly and pangenomics, among many others. Current algorithms to compute the optimal, gap-affine partial order alignment do not scale well to larger graphs and sequences. While heuristic approaches exist, they do not guarantee optimal alignment and sacrifice alignment accuracy.

Articular malalignment and ulnocarpal impaction can progress to osteoarthritis in the wrist. This may be triggered by tears of the scapholunate ligament (rarely the lunotriquetral ligament) or the foveal lamina of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. In the pre-degenerative stages, radiographic findings are inconclusive, and symptoms may be absent or discrete.

Bacteria encode various DNA repair pathways to maintain genome integrity. However, the high degree of homology between DNA repair proteins or their domains hampers accurate identification. Here, we describe a stringent search strategy to identify DNA repair proteins and provide a systematic analysis of taxonomic distribution and co-occurrence of DNA repair proteins involved in RecA-dependent homologous recombination.

PD-L1 expression in high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is not a biomarker of response to BCG.

World J Urol

January 2025

Department of Urology, Erasmus University Medical Center, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, Dr. Molewaterplein 40, Room Be-304, 3015 GD, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Purpose: Up to 50% of high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (HR-NMIBC) patients fail Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment, resulting in a high risk of progression and poor clinical outcomes. Biomarkers that predict outcomes after BCG are lacking. The antitumor effects of BCG are driven by a cytotoxic T cell response, which may be controlled by immune checkpoint proteins like Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1).
