Background: Postoperative radiation therapy after breast conserving surgery in the older adult population is a matter of debate; although radiation therapy was shown to benefit these patients concerning local disease control, the absolute benefit was small and potentially negligible. Partial breast irradiation has been introduced as an alternative treatment approach for low-risk patients. Older adult patients with early breast cancer constitute a unique population with regards to prognosis and potential comorbidities, thus minimizing treatment to maintain health-related quality of life (HRQoL) without compromising survival is extremely important.

Background: High-dose hypofractionated radiotherapy should theoretically result in a deviation from the typical linear-quadratic shape of the cell survival curve beyond a certain threshold dose, yet no evidence for this hypothesis has so far been found in clinical data of stereotactic body radiotherapy treatment (SBRT) for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A pragmatic explanation is a larger α/β ratio than the conventionally assumed 10 Gy. We here attempted an estimation of the α/β ratio for NSCLC treated with SBRT using individual patient data.

Purpose: To report on the benchmark case (BC) study performed in the context of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer prospective multicentre Lungtech trial of SBRT for patients with inoperable centrally located lung tumours.

Methods And Materials: Target volume and organs at risk (OARs) delineations first needed to be acceptable before the treatment plan was reviewed. Retrospectively, Dice similarity coefficients of the OARs and the target volumes were calculated and a set of gold standard contours adapted for each institution margins was applied on the accepted dose submissions to evaluate the influence of acceptable delineation variations on dosimetry.

Resection of maxillary cancer often results in incomplete excision because of the tumour's proximity to important structures such as the orbit. To deal with this problem we prospectively investigated the feasibility of intraoperative imaging during maxillectomy to verify the planned resection margins. In total, six patients diagnosed with maxillary cancer listed for maxillectomy were included, irrespective of the histological type of tumour.

In 2010, EUSOMA published a position paper, describing a set of benchmark quality indicators (QIs) that could be adopted by breast centres to allow standardised auditing and quality assurance and to establish an agreed minimum standard of care. Towards the end of 2014, EUSOMA decided to update the paper on QIs to consider and incorporate new scientific knowledge in the field. Several new QIs have been included to address the need for improved follow-up care of patients following primary treatments.

Carriers of germline mutations in the BRCA1 gene have a significant increased lifetime risk for being diagnosed with breast cancer. The incomplete penetrance of BRCA1 suggests that environmental and/or genetic factors modify the risk and incidence among mutation carriers. Nutrition and particular micronutrients play a central role in modifying the phenotypic expression of a given genotype by regulating chromatin structure and gene expression.

Beta1D is a skeletal muscle-specific splice variant of the beta1 integrin subunit, while beta1A integrin subunit has a wide tissue distribution. We have previously shown that replacement of beta1A by beta1D by homologous recombination (knockin) in all mouse tissues was embryonic lethal. Through two successive rounds of homologous recombination, we have now produced embryonic stem (ES) cells expressing beta1D instead of beta1A, and analyzed the ability of beta1D to support ES cell differentiation in vitro and in teratomas in vivo.

Twenty-one patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma were treated with a combination chemotherapy schedule of sequential methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil alternated with 4-epidoxorubicin and cisplatin. This scheme was active, with 7 partial responses leading to a response rate of 33% (+/- 20%). In two cases the tumor became operable.

Invasion of malignant MO4 cells into embryonic chick heart fragments in an organ culture assay was arrested for at least 7 days when the temperature was lowered to 28 degrees C. Prolonged culturing of MO4 cells at 28 degrees C on tissue culture substrates showed no recuperation of fucose incorporation into cell surface glycopeptides. However, invasion was restored after 10 days of organ culture in confrontation with chick heart tissue at 28 degrees C.
