Investigation of Concurrent Pneumococcal Meningitis in Two Children Attending the Same Day-Care Center.

Front Pediatr

July 2022

ACTIV, Association Clinique et Thérapeutique Infantile du Val-de-Marne, Créteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses two unusual cases of pneumococcal meningitis in children from the same daycare center occurring within a short time frame.
  • Both cases were studied, confirming the presence of different pneumococcal serotypes, indicating that the infections were not linked.
  • A carriage study conducted in the daycare found that a high percentage of children carried pneumococcus, but this did not lead to further outbreaks or require action for the other children.

Background: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines covering 10 (PCV10) and 13 (PCV13) serotypes have been introduced in the infant immunization schedule of most European countries in 2010-11. To provide additional real-life data, we measured the effectiveness of PCV10 and PCV13 against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children of 12 European sites (SpIDnet).

Methods: We compared the vaccination status of PCV10 and PCV13 serotype IPD (cases) to that of nonPCV13 serotype IPD (controls) reported in 2012-2018.

Mexico has one of the highest overweight and obesity rates in the world. Our objective is to describe the tendency of overweight and obesity by sex, health service affiliation, and socioeconomic tertile (T1,2,3), and to give examples of public policies derived from the results of the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Surveys (ENSANUT). Data come from the 2006, 2012, and 2016 ENSANUTs, which are probabilistic surveys that allow us to make inferences at the national level, on urban and rural strata and regions; their coverage includes all the population age groups.

Little evidence exists regarding the association between waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors in Mexican adults. Our study pursued a twofold objective: To describe the association between a high WHtR and CVR indicators among Mexican adults canvassed by the 2016 Half-Way National Health and Nutrition Survey, and to examine the interaction of sex and age on this association. We analyzed data from the adult sample (≥20 years old) and classified in two groups using WHtRs ≥0.

A hypothesis concerning habitual sleep reduction and its adverse consequences among general population in modern societies has received wide publicity in the mass media, although scientific evidence supporting the hypothesis is scarce. Similarly, there is an extensively distributed belief, at least in Finland, that the prevalence of insomnia-related symptoms is increasing, but evidence for this is even sparser. These issues are important because of the known increased risk of mortality and health risks associated with sleep duration deviating from 7 to 8 h.

Background: Small body size at birth and slow growth during the first 2 years after birth, leading to low body mass index (BMI) at 2 years, are associated with coronary heart disease and stroke in adult life. We tested the hypothesis that this path of growth is associated with an atherogenic lipid profile in later life.

Methods: We measured serum lipid concentrations at age 57-70 years in 1999 members of the Helsinki Birth Cohort.

We examined naturally acquired antibodies to pneumococcal vaccine candidate proteins PhtB and PhtE in children during their first 2 years of life. Prior culture-confirmed pneumococcal exposure was shown to induce the development of anti-PhtB and -PhtE antibodies. The anti-PhtB or -PhtE antibody concentrations were not significantly associated with a decreased risk of subsequent pneumococcal acute otitis media.

Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion, The National Public Health Institute, Mannerheimintie 166, 00300 Helsinki, Finland.

Whether one is male or female is one of the most important determinants of human health. While males are more susceptible to cardiovascular and infectious disease, they are outnumbered by women for many autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Recently, individual differences in the physiological response to stress have emerged as a potentially important risk factor for these disorders.

Intratumoral lymphatics are essential for the metastatic spread and prognosis in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck region.

Cancer Res

April 2003

The National Public Health Institute, Turku University School of Biomedical Sciences, Department of Medical Microbiology and the MediCity Research Laboratory, Turku University, FIN-20520 Turku, Finland.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) frequently disseminate to regional lymph nodes. To investigate the possible mechanisms involved, we studied the expression of cancer cell adhesion molecules together with lymphatic vascular and blood vascular markers in a panel of 97 primary HNSCC tumors and correlated expression levels with conventional clinicopathological parameters and with long-term prognosis. In particular, we measured the density of intratumoral and peritumoral lymph vessels as assessed with the marker lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1) and the density of tumor CD44, a receptor up-regulated in many metastatic cancers.
