Background: Moderate-to-severe allergic asthma has a substantial impact on patients' quality of life (QOL). Despite care consistent with treatment guidelines, many patients with moderate-to-severe asthma still experience variability in asthma control, signaling an unmet need within this population. Omalizumab has recently demonstrated clinical efficacy and safety in treating IgE-mediated asthma.

Validation of an overactive bladder awareness tool for use in primary care settings.

Overactive bladder (OAB)--a syndrome characterized by urinary urgency, with or without urge incontinence, urinary frequency and nocturia--is estimated to affect 10% to 20% of the US and European populations. This study was carried out to validate a patient-administered screening awareness tool to identify patients with bothersome OAB symptoms. Patients were recruited from 12 primary care and 1 gynecology practice during regularly scheduled appointments.

The importance of drug adverse effects compared with seizure control for people with epilepsy: a discrete choice experiment.

Introduction: Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) have been shown to reduce the severity and frequency of seizures for most patients. However, many patients experience adverse effects in order to maintain seizure control.

Study Design: A stated preference discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to explore the preferences of people with epilepsy regarding the adverse effects and seizure control of AEDs.

Parent-proxy EQ-5D ratings of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in the US and the UK.

Background: The symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are associated with impairment in multiple domains of health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). HR-QOL of children with ADHD has been assessed by relatively long multidimensional questionnaires. A review of the literature found no studies using the brief, well established EuroQoL Five-Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D) to estimate the HR-QOL of children with ADHD.

Background: Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder which impacts patient functioning and well-being. With increasing interest in cost-effectiveness of treatments, it is necessary to provide estimates of patient's perspectives on treatment outcomes. This study estimated health state utilities for hypothetical bipolar-related health states and patient's current health from bipolar I patients.

Bipolar disorder and health-related quality of life : review of burden of disease and clinical trials.

Bipolar disorder is a chronic psychiatric disorder with a variable course and significant impact on patients' social, occupational, and general functioning and wellbeing. Although there are effective pharmaceutical and psychosocial interventions for patients with bipolar disorder, many patients receive poor-quality care. Prospective longitudinal studies demonstrate that less than half of bipolar disorder patients have a good long-term response to treatment, long-term outcome is highly variable, and many patients do not fully recover.
