Article Synopsis
  • Infusion sets linked to invasive vascular devices are routinely changed to minimize infection, but research indicates that changing them every 7 days does not raise infection rates for central venous catheters (CVCs).
  • A study aimed to evaluate the guidelines for changing CVC infusion sets in intensive care units (ICUs) across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Findings from 51 ICUs revealed that many still recommend replacing infusion tubing every 3-4 days, though recent evidence supports extending this period to 7 days, highlighting the need for updated policies to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Preeclampsia in 2023: Time for preventing early onset- and term preeclampsia: The paramount role of gestational weight gain.

J Reprod Immunol

August 2023

Centre d'Etudes Périnatales Océan Indien (CEPOI), Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sud Réunion, BP 350, 97448 Saint-Pierre Cedex, La Réunion, France; Service de Gynécologie et Obstétrique, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sud Réunion, BP 350, 97448 Saint-Pierre Cedex, La Réunion, France.

The 2023 goal is to halve the incidence of preeclampsia worldwide to reach 3 million cases per year vs the current approximately 7 million cases. Preventive treatment by low dose aspirin only halves the incidence of early-onset preeclampsia (EOP < 34 weeks gestation) in high-risk women. However, 90% of PE cases are the late onset form (LOP, 34 weeks onward) proportionally associated with increasing maternal pre-pregnancy BMI.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess whether a nutrient-enriched formula (NEF) positively impacted body weight gain in late preterm infants compared to a standard term formula (STF).
  • - It was a randomized controlled trial that included 40 infants but was terminated early due to recruitment difficulties, leading to a much smaller sample size than planned.
  • - Results showed no significant difference in weight gain between NEF and STF groups, although the NEF group had a lower risk of infectious illness, indicating the need for cautious interpretation of the findings.

Background: There is a disparity in health outcomes between indigenous and nonindigenous Australians, with higher chronic disease burden and shorter life expectancy in this minority population. Although rates of breast cancer among indigenous women are lower than nonindigenous women, they face a higher breast cancer-associated mortality, which may not entirely be explained by socio-economic disadvantage.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study investigated previously described pathologic prognostic factors in indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory.
