Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common diseases of the genitourinary system. The prevalence of BPH increases in men with advancing age. While transurethral resection of the prostate gland entails complications such as retrograde ejaculation, urinary incontinence, hematuria, urethral strictures, bladder neck sclerosis, and other adverse events, it is necessary to apply minimally invasive surgical methods such as superselective embolization of the prostatic arteries (PAE), particularly Proximal Embolization First Then Distal Embolization (PErFecTED).

Article Synopsis
  • Valentin's rock lizard is believed to be the parent species of several parthenogenetic rock lizard species, indicating complex evolutionary processes in their shared habitats.
  • This lizard species is long-lived and exhibits a distinctive size difference between genders, with females being larger, which is atypical for its genus.
  • They have adaptations for high-altitude living, such as larger eggs and early reproduction, and their population density can vary widely without being impacted by the presence of parthenogenic species.

Motivation: Accurate structural alignment of proteins is crucial at studying structure-function relationship in evolutionarily distant homologues. Various software tools were proposed to align multiple protein 3D-structures utilizing one CPU and thus are of limited productivity at large-scale analysis of protein families/superfamilies.

Results: The parMATT is a hybrid MPI/pthreads/OpenMP parallel re-implementation of the MATT algorithm to align multiple protein 3D-structures by allowing translations and twists.

Motivation: Comparative analysis of homologous proteins in a functionally diverse superfamily is a valuable tool at studying structure-function relationship, but represents a methodological challenge.

Results: The Mustguseal web-server can automatically build large structure-guided sequence alignments of functionally diverse protein families that include thousands of proteins basing on all available information about their structures and sequences in public databases. Superimposition of protein structures is implemented to compare evolutionarily distant relatives, whereas alignment of sequences is used to compare close homologues.

Asian Mountain Toads () are a poorly known genus of mostly small-sized anurans from southeastern China and Indochina. To shed light on the systematics within this group, the most comprehensive mitochondrial DNA phylogeny for the genus to date is presented, and the taxonomy and biogeography of this group is discussed. Complimented with extensive morphological data (including associated statistical analyses), molecular data indicates that the Langbian Plateau, in the southern Annamite Mountains, Vietnam, is one of the diversity centres of this genus where three often sympatric species of are found, , and an undescribed species.

[The individual fatty acids of blood plasma: biological role of substrates, parameters of quantity and quality, diagnostic of atherosclerosis and atheromotosis.].

Klin Lab Diagn

January 2017

The Federal state budget scientific institution "The Russian cardiologic R&D production complex" of Minzdrav of Russia, 121552, Moscow, Russia.

The atherosclerosis and atheromotosis are supposed to be, according to phylogenetic theory of general pathology, two etiologically different aphysiological processes, unified by community of pathogenesis. The atherosclerosis is a derangement of biological function of trophology (feeding), biological reaction of exotrophy (external feeding) and biological function of adaptation, biological reaction of compensation in response to deficiency of ῳ-3 and ῳ-6 polyenoic fatty acids. In case of deficiency of polyenoic fatty acids in cells and during synthesis of eicosanoids of group I from unsaturated endogenous ῳ-6 С20: 3 digomo-γ-linoleic unsaturated fatty acid, atherosclerosis is developed, a complex metabolism disorder in vivo.

Structural Insight into Specificity of Interactions between Nonconventional Three-finger Weak Toxin from Naja kaouthia (WTX) and Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors.

J Biol Chem

September 2015

From the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, 16/10 Miklukho-Maklaya Street, 117997 Moscow, Russia, the Lomonosov Moscow State University, 119991 Moscow, Russia.

Weak toxin from Naja kaouthia (WTX) belongs to the group of nonconventional "three-finger" snake neurotoxins. It irreversibly inhibits nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and allosterically interacts with muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs). Using site-directed mutagenesis, NMR spectroscopy, and computer modeling, we investigated the recombinant mutant WTX analogue (rWTX) which, compared with the native toxin, has an additional N-terminal methionine residue.

Ionotropic receptors of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABAAR) regulate neuronal inhibition and are targeted by benzodiazepines and general anesthetics. We show that a fluorescent derivative of α-cobratoxin (α-Ctx), belonging to the family of three-finger toxins from snake venoms, specifically stained the α1β3γ2 receptor; and at 10 μm α-Ctx completely blocked GABA-induced currents in this receptor expressed in Xenopus oocytes (IC50 = 236 nm) and less potently inhibited α1β2γ2 ≈ α2β2γ2 > α5β2γ2 > α2β3γ2 and α1β3δ GABAARs. The α1β3γ2 receptor was also inhibited by some other three-finger toxins, long α-neurotoxin Ls III and nonconventional toxin WTX.

A solid-phase fluorescent biosensor for the determination of phenolic compounds (simple substituted phenols and catecholamines) and peroxides has been developed. The biosensor has a simple construction and the analytical signal is measured directly in a biosensitive layer {peroxidase-chitosan} on the sensor surface. This approach allowed analyzing samples with complex matrices (including water-insoluble samples and nontransparent solutions) without their preliminary pretreatment.

We study chiral electrostatic interaction between artificial ideal homopolymer DNA-like molecules in which a number of phosphate groups of the sugar-phosphate backbone are exchanged for the pyrophosphate ones. We employ a model in which the DNA is considered as a one-dimensional lattice of dipoles and charges corresponding to base pairs and (pyro)phosphate groups, respectively. The interaction between molecules of the DNA is described by a pair potential U of electrostatic forces between the two sets of dipoles and charges belonging to respective lattices describing the molecules.
