Introduction: Primary breast lymphoma represents only 1% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. The most common histology is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. When dual translocations of MYC and BCL2 or BCL6 occur, it is referred to as "high-grade B-cell lymphoma with rearrangements of MYC and BCL2 and/or BCL6" according to the 4th edition of the WHO classification of hematolymphoid tumors.

Background Context: Pedicle screw breach (PSB) is not uncommon following lumbar instrumentation, and in some instances, it may lead to vascular and/or neurologic complications. Previous literature suggested that screws crossing the vertebral midline on an anterior-posterior (AP) radiograph (or midsagittal on CT) are concerning for medial pedicle breach.

Objective: Our primary aim was to map out the safe zones (SZ) of bilateral pedicle instrumentation and their relationship at each lumbar vertebral level.

A comprehensive overview is presented of the nutritional issues faced by people who use drugs or are undergoing treatment for recovery. Chronic substance use affects a person's nutritional status and body composition through decreased intake, nutrient absorption, and dysregulation of hormones that alter the mechanisms of satiety and food intake. Anthropometrics alone is not the best indicator of nutritional status, because this population has hidden deficiencies and disturbed metabolic parameters.

Selective metal leaching from technosols based on synthetic root exudate composition.

J Environ Sci (China)

October 2020

Research and Analysis Platform for Environmental Sciences (PRASE), Doctoral School of Sciences and Technology (EDST), The Lebanese University, P.O. 5, Rafic Hariri Campus, Hadat, Lebanon; Department of Earth and Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences, The Lebanese University, Rafic Hariri Campus, Hadat, Lebanon; Laboratory of Georesources, Geosciences and Environment (L2GE), Faculty of Sciences, The Lebanese University, Fanar, Lebanon.

This study focused on metal release from technosols induced by synthetic root exudate (SRE). The effect of SRE composition on metal release was studied using six technosols. This was done by treating the technosols with SRE solutions having varying concentrations of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), namely oxalic, citric, and malic acids.

(1) Background: Malnutrition is prevalent in hemodialysis (HD) patients and is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of malnutrition using the malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) and phase angle (PhA) and compare their concordance with the new Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition. (2) Methods: Seventy HD patients were assessed.

Olive growing in Lebanon plays an important role at both a social and economic level. Nevertheless, the quality of olive oil produced in the country is rarely addressed. In this study, oil content, fatty acid, and phenolic profiles were studied along four different ripening stages for 11 varieties of olives, including two clones of the local variety "Baladi," in addition to nine foreign varieties ("Ascolana Tenera," "Bella di Cerignola," "Itrana," "Jabaa," "Kalamata," "Nabali," "Salonenque," "Sigoise," and "Tanche").

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes isolated photon and photon+jet production in proton-proton collisions using data from the CMS experiment, focusing on events from 2015 with an integrated luminosity of 2.26 fb⁻¹.
  • The researchers measured the cross section for both isolated photon production and photon+jet production, examining how these values change with the photon’s transverse energy in a defined area.
  • The results align well with theoretical predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), confirming the accuracy of the theoretical models used.

Background And Methods: Stroke incidence and mortality are reported to have increased in the Middle-East and North African (MENA) countries during the last decade. This was a prospective observational study to examine the baseline characteristics of stroke patients in the MENA region and to compare the MENA vs. the non-MENA stroke cohort in the Safe Implementation of Treatments in Stroke (SITS) International Registry.

J Obes

September 2019

INSPECT-LB, Institut National de Santé Publique, d'Épidémiologie Clinique et de Toxicologie, Faculty of Public Health, The Lebanese University, Beirut, Lebanon.

Background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are considered as a global health problem and considered as a public health priority with the more considerable increasing trend of obesity and cardiometabolic disorders rates in the Middle Eastern countries. This systematic review aims at assessing the prevalence, incidence rates, and trends, as well as the cost of obesity and related cardiometabolic disorders in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Methods: A highly sensitive strategy was used to retrieve original observational studies, addressing the epidemiology and cost of obesity and related cardiometabolic disorders in the UAE, irrespective of nationality (nationals and expatriates).

Background: Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) has been used in clinical and experimental settings to establish sensory assessment for different types of pains, and may be a useful tool for the assessment of orofacial pain, but this premise needs to be tested.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate responses to thermal stimuli between painful and non-painful facial sites in subjects with orofacial pain using QST.

Methods: A total of 60 participants (5o females: 28-83 years; 10 males: 44-81 years) with unilateral orofacial pain were recruited from the Orofacial Pain Clinic at the Pain Management and Research Centre, Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia.

Background: Ankle sprains are common joint injuries in daily and sports activities, whose underlying mechanisms have been amply studied. If joint structures are directly damaged, neuromuscular activity can be affected, particularly in the time domain. This study aims to establish whether previous ankle injury correlates with changes in the inter-joint synergy of the entire lower limb and in the muscle activity pattern during walking.

Liver cirrhosis represents a state of end-stage failure that is usually fatal. The condition results in liver dysfunction, recurrent ascites, encephalopathy, renal failure, splenomegaly, bleeding, and a poor quality of life in general. With the current severe shortage of donated organs, the only available treatment in the developing countries remains palliative care.

Background: Multiple clinical guidelines are available to improve and standardize the delivery of nutrition support. However, recommendations are not being universally applied at the bedside due to challenges of resources and barriers of knowledge. Assessing the current level of nutrition support practice is the first step to understand the barriers and ultimately implement potential strategies to increase guideline adherence and promote quality nutrition support in hospitals.

We treated 2 patients with progressive, refractory scleroderma with a combined immunotherapy approach using plasmapheresis followed by rituximab and then intravenous umbilical-cord-derived allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Both patients improved subjectively and objectively for over a year. Upon recurrence of their symptoms, the patients were treated again with allogeneic MSCs alone with a very good response.

Introduction: Adiponectin (APN), an adipocytokine, exerts protective effects on cardiac remodeling, while angiotensin II (Ang II) induces hypertension and vascular remodeling. The potential protective role of APN on the vasculature during hypertension has not been fully elucidated yet. Here, we evaluate the molecular mechanisms of the protective role of APN in the physiological response of the vascular wall to Ang II.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Medicinal plant species in Lebanon are experiencing severe threats because of various environmental conditions, human expansion footprints and recent growing global demand. Organized research and information on indigenous medicinal plants and knowledge have been very limited and little efforts have been invested to develop a complete inventory for native medicinal plants and associated traditional knowledge in the country. Recognized as a key biodiversity area of the Mediterranean Basin, Mount Hermon hosts important richness of medicinal plants that has been traditionally used in treatment of many illnesses since generations.
