The association of homocysteine metabolism-related nutrients along with renal function to homocysteine levels is not well known in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We investigated the relevance of kidney function, albuminuria, and nutritional factors to serum homocysteine in T2DM patients. This cross-sectional study enrolled 149 T2DM patients (96 men and 53 postmenopausal women), and patient characteristics and laboratory data including kidney-related data [glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urinary albumin excretion (UACR), uric acid] and metabolism parameters (hemoglobin A1c and lipids) were collected from the medical record and serum levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, zinc, homocysteine and UACR were also acquired.

Not only low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol but also non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol (VLDL-C), and intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) cholesterol (IDL-C) are reported to be significant risk markers for coronary heart disease (CHD). We reported the relevance of IDL-C to Framingham risk score (F-score), but the present study addressed the relevance of IDL-C to Suita score (S-score), a risk score for coronary heart disease (CHD) developed for the Japanese individuals in addition to F-score. The cholesterol levels of lipoproteins, including triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins (IDL and VLDL), were measured by an anion exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (AEX-HPLC).

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in cancer treatment have increased survival rates, but cancer survivors may later develop heart failure (HF), which can lead to poor nutrition outcomes.
  • A study analyzed heart failure patients, comparing those with cancer to those without, and found that cancer patients had worse nutritional scores and higher long-term mortality rates.
  • The findings highlight the need for multidisciplinary care for heart failure patients with cancer, as both conditions, along with malnutrition, independently contribute to increased mortality.

Mirtazapine (MTZ) is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant that has been associated with an increased risk of bleeding. However, there is insufficient evidence confirming this association. We hypothesised that 5-HT and α receptor-mediated inhibitory effects of MTZ on platelets suppress platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding.

Treatment Strategy for Multiple Myeloma to Improve Immunological Environment and Maintain MRD Negativity.

Cancers (Basel)

September 2021

Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Clinical Oncology and Hematology, The Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo 105-8461, Japan.

Improving the immunological environment and eradicating minimal residual disease (MRD) are the two main treatment goals for long-term survival in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs), monoclonal antibody drugs (MoAbs), and autologous grafts for autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) can improve the immunological microenvironment. ASCT, MoAbs, and proteasome inhibitors (PIs) may be important for the achievement of MRD negativity.

Article Synopsis
  • - Surgical site infections (SSI) are common after stoma reversal operations, leading to issues like reduced patient mobility and higher hospital expenses, prompting the need for a risk scoring system.
  • - A study analyzed data from 182 patients who had elective stoma reversals and identified three key preoperative risk factors for developing SR-SSI: subcutaneous fat thickness ≥ 20 mm, stoma creation time ≤ 20 weeks, and previous SSI from initial surgery.
  • - A scoring system based on these factors was developed, demonstrating that a higher score significantly correlates with increased SR-SSI rates, showing potential for clinical application in risk prediction.

May 2021

Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, Practice Center for Registered Dietitian, Chubu University, 1200 Matsumoto-cho, Kasugai, Aichi, 487-8501, Japan.

Objectives: In 2009, the Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry (JSCC) recommended a reference method for the measurement of serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. This automated method uses cholesterol esterase-cholesterol dehydrogenase to measure cholesterol levels in fractions obtained after ultracentrifugation and dextran sulfate/magnesium chloride precipitation. In the present study, using fresh samples, we compared the LDL-C and HDL-C levels measured using this method with those measured using the traditional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-beta-quantification (BQ) method.
