Impelling Factors for Contracting COVID-19 Among Surgical Professionals During the Pandemic: A Multinational Cohort Study.

Background: Medical workers, including surgical professionals working in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treating hospitals, were under enormous stress during the pandemic. This global study investigated factors endowing COVID-19 amongst surgical professionals and students.

Methods: This global cross-sectional survey was made live on February 18, 2021 and closed for analysis on March 13, 2021.

Evaluation of the RadCalc collapsed cone dose calculation algorithm against measured data.

This work describes the experimental validation of the RadCalc (Lifeline software Inc, Tyler) collapsed cone dose calculation algorithm against measured data for a range of scenarios. 6 MV photon beam data were measured in a large water tank on a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator. These were input into the RadCalc software, in conjunction with head geometry and output calibration information, then used to create a collapsed cone beam model.

Pain Management Interventions for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objective: Determine the relative effectiveness and safety profiles of percutaneous and minimally invasive interventions for chronic low back pain.

Methods: A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials published in the past 20 years reporting on radiofrequency ablation of the basivertebral, disk annulus and facet nerve structures, steroid injection of the disk, facet joint, and medial branch, biological therapies, and multifidus muscle stimulation. Outcomes evaluated included Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores, quality of life (SF-36 and EQ-5D) scores, and serious adverse event (SAE) rates.

Activation of telomerase by TA-65 enhances immunity and reduces inflammation post myocardial infarction.

Myocardial infarction (MI) accelerates immune ageing characterised by lymphopenia, expansion of terminally differentiated CD8 T-lymphocytes (CD8 T) and inflammation. Pre-clinical data showed that TA-65, an oral telomerase activator, reduced immune ageing and inflammation after MI. We conducted a double blinded randomised controlled pilot trial evaluating the use of TA-65 to reduce immune cell ageing in patients following MI.

Satisfaction of orthodontic Post-CCST training: A survey of trainee perceptions.

Introduction: This survey was undertaken as a second part to 'Barriers to Post-CCST training in orthodontics: A survey of trainee perceptions'. Recruitment of Post-CCST trainees in certain areas of the country has attracted concerns as it has become increasingly difficult. This survey was undertaken to assess trainee satisfaction with Post-CCST training and to look at possible ways to improve trainee satisfaction and make Post-CCST training more desirable.

Treatment of pathophysiologic propagation outside of the pulmonary veins in retreatment of atrial fibrillation patients: RECOVER AF study.

Aims: RECOVER AF evaluated the performance of whole-chamber non-contact charge-density mapping to guide the ablation of non-pulmonary vein (PV) targets in persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients following either a first or second failed procedure.

Methods And Results: RECOVER AF was a prospective, non-randomized trial that enrolled patients scheduled for a first or second ablation retreatment for recurrent AF. The PVs were assessed and re-isolated if necessary.

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects patients of all skin types. Acne scarring affects up to 95% of patients. Laser treatment is the most effective treatment for acne scarring.

Functional outcomes following mandibulectomy and fibular free-flap reconstruction.

There remains a paucity of evidence with regards to functional outcomes following the reconstruction of segmental defects in the mandible. It is, however, well recognised that oral rehabilitation following head and neck surgery is a driver of improved quality of life outcomes. We present a prospective service review of functional outcomes of a consecutive cohort of patients following segmental mandibulectomy and virtual surgical planning (VSP) composite fibular free-flap reconstruction.

Effect of Vitamin E on Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Meta-Analysis.

The aim of the current meta-analysis was to assess the effects of vitamin E on clinical outcomes in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The current meta-analysis was planned, reported, and conducted per the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Two authors systematically searched for all papers using PubMed, Cochrane Central Register, and Embase from inception to October 15, 2022.

A Randomized Trial of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation Versus Alternative Forms of Surgical Cartilage Management in Patients With a Failed Primary Treatment for Chondral or Osteochondral Defects in the Knee.

Background: There are limited randomized controlled trials with long-term outcomes comparing autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) versus alternative forms of surgical cartilage management within the knee.

Purpose: To determine at 5 years after surgery whether ACI was superior to alternative forms of cartilage management in patients after a failed previous treatment for chondral or osteochondral defects in the knee.

Holistic Treatment Response: An International Expert Panel Definition and Criteria for a New Paradigm in the Assessment of Clinical Outcomes of Spinal Cord Stimulation.

Background: Treatment response to spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is focused on the magnitude of effects on pain intensity. However, chronic pain is a multidimensional condition that may affect individuals in different ways and as such it seems reductionist to evaluate treatment response based solely on a unidimensional measure such as pain intensity.

Aim: The aim of this article is to add to a framework started by IMMPACT for assessing the wider health impact of treatment with SCS for people with chronic pain, a "holistic treatment response".

Prehabilitation in elective patients undergoing cardiac surgery: a randomised control trial (THE PrEPS TRIAL) - a study protocol.

Introduction: Prehabilitation prior to surgery has been shown to reduce postoperative complications, reduce length of hospital stay and improve quality of life after cancer and limb reconstruction surgery. However, there are minimal data on the impact of prehabilitation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, despite the fact these patients are generally older and have more comorbidities and frailty. This trial will assess the feasibility and impact of a prehabilitation intervention consisting of exercise and inspiratory muscle training on preoperative functional exercise capacity in adult patients awaiting elective cardiac surgery, and determine any impact on clinical outcomes after surgery.

First-time revision knee arthroplasty using a hinged prosthesis : temporal trends, indications, and risk factors associated with re-revision using data from the National Joint Registry for 3,855 patients.

Aims: The aim of this study was to identify variables associated with time to revision, demographic details associated with revision indication, and type of prosthesis employed, and to describe the survival of hinge knee arthroplasty (HKA) when used for first-time knee revision surgery and factors that were associated with re-revision.

Methods: Patient demographic details, BMI, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, indication for revision, surgical approach, surgeon grade, implant type (fixed and rotating), time of revision from primary implantation, and re-revision if undertaken were obtained from the National Joint Registry data for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man over an 18-year period (2003 to 2021).

Impact of video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy versus open lobectomy for lung cancer on recovery assessed using self-reported physical function: VIOLET RCT.

Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Surgery remains the main method of managing early-stage disease. Minimal-access video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery results in less tissue trauma than open surgery; however, it is not known if it improves patient outcomes.

A Clinical Evaluation of the Accuracy of an Intrathecal Drug Delivery Device.

Introduction: Implantable intrathecal drug delivery (ITDD) devices are used to treat severe pain and spasticity refractory to conventional medical management. Although off-label medications and drug admixtures are commonly used in clinical practice and recommended by international guidelines, manufacturers state that this practice can result in device failure. The impact of off-label drugs and drug combinations on pump accuracy has hitherto never been assessed.
