Aim: Serum levels of cholesterol absorption and synthesis markers are known to be associated with cardiovascular risk. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a well-known inherited disorder presenting elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) levels and premature coronary disease. In this study, we aim to examine the differences in terms of serum markers of cholesterol metabolism between FH and non-FH individuals and to examine their associations with serum lipid levels.

Tandem autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) has been reconsidered for high-risk patients with myeloma, and the eligibility criteria for up-front ASCT have been updated to include more elderly patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of tandem ASCT in elderly patients with myeloma compared to tandem ASCT in young patients and single ASCT in elderly patients. A retrospective study using the Transplant Registry Unified Management Program database of the Japanese Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, which included 64 elderly and 613 young patients who received tandem ASCT, and 891 elderly patients who received single ASCT, was conducted.

Background/aim: Evidence on the optimal extent of lymph node dissection for left-sided pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is scarce. The aim of the current study was to compare the long-term outcomes of patients who underwent D1 distal pancreatectomy (DP) with D2 DP for left-sided PDAC.
Patients And Methods: Patients undergoing DP for left-sided PDAC at the four institutions affiliated to The Jikei University were enrolled in this study.

Introduction: Elotuzumab and lenalidomide plus dexamethasone (ERd) is a standard salvage chemotherapy for multiple myeloma, and elotuzumab is commonly administered every 2 weeks after cycle 3 (conventional ERd). Alternatively, elotuzumab may often be used every 4 weeks (monthly ERd) in real-world practice. The purpose of this multicenter observational study was to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of monthly ERd.

Objective: This study evaluated the feasibility of performing non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with local anesthesia for parapneumonic effusion and empyema resistant to conservative treatment.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 80 patients who underwent surgery for parapneumonic effusions and empyema between 2015 and 2021. Patients were divided into those who received non-intubated local anesthesia and general anesthesia during surgery.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The risk of developing CVD is associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. A high level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (LDL-C) is a primary risk factor for ASCVD.

Objective: Most of the entry tears of uncomplicated type B aortic dissection are located in the distal arch and extends in a retrograde manner to the level of the left subclavian artery. Our objective was to evaluate feasibility and effectiveness using fenestrated sent graft with complete neck vessel preservation to treat uncomplicated type B aortic dissection.
Subjects And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the record of patients with uncomplicated type B aortic dissection who underwent fenestrated thoracic endovascular aortic repair in subacute phase (15-90 days) between August 2016 and April 2020.

Background: R0 resection is an important prognostic factor in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC). Advances in chemotherapy have improved the R0 resection rate for unresectable locally advanced (UR-LA) PC. There is a limit to determine on imaging whether R0 resection is possible due to chemotherapy effects.

Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for patients with pancreatic cancer after curative resection. However, there is limited evidence regarding the efficacy and prognostic factors for adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with stage I pancreatic cancer. This study aimed to identify patients in whom chemotherapy was effective and to detect prognostic factors for stage I pancreatic cancer based on guidelines of the 8 edition of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

Rituximab is an effective treatment for frequently relapsing/steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome, but there is concern about infections caused by humoral immunodeficiency. We herein report a case of prolonged (>7 weeks) severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. A 24-year-old man with minimal change disease treated with rituximab developed SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Hospital ethics committees (HECs) are expected to play extremely broad and pivotal roles such as case consultation, education of staffs on healthcare ethics, and institutional policy formation. Despite the growing importance of HECs, there are no standards for setup and operation of HECs, and composition and activities of HECs at each institution are rarely disclosed in Japan. In addition, there is also a lack of information sharing and collaboration among HECs.

In the present study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics and outcomes of poor mobilizers. Clinical data on poorly mobilized patients who underwent PBSC harvest for almost 10 years were retrospectively collected from 44 institutions in the Japanese Society of Myeloma (JSM).

Background: Multi-matrix mesalazine (MMX) is an important treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC); however, it is often excreted intact, which increases the risk of relapse. This study aimed to clarify the risk factors for insoluble MMX excretion.
Methods: The subjects were 102 UC patients who were newly prescribed MMX alone to induce remission.

Objective: The surgical treatment of Chiari malformation type I (CM-I) frequently involves dural incision at the posterior cranial fossa. In cases of persistent patent occipital sinus (OS), the sinus is usually obliterated and divided. However, there are some patients whose OS is prominent and requires crucial modification of the operative planning to avoid potentially life-threatening massive hemorrhage and disturbance of cerebral venous circulation.

Background: Anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody is an autoantibody marker often observed in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). The pathological relevance of complicated pulmonary disorders in anti-AQP4 antibody-positive NMOSD remains unclear. We aimed to assess the clinical and histological relevance of complicated pulmonary disorders in anti-AQP4 antibody-positive NMOSD.
