Nitrogen (N) losses from fertilized fields pose a major concern in modern agriculture due to environmental implications. Urease inhibitors, such as -(-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), nitrification inhibitors (NI), like dicyandiamide (DCD), and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) could have potential in reducing N losses. For evaluating their effectiveness, investigations were undertaken through incubation and greenhouse experiments by mixing a urea fertilizer with sole NBPT, DCD, and SOB, as well as combined, on ammonia volatilization losses from silt loam soil.

Soy protein-polyphenols conjugates interaction mechanism, characterization, techno-functional and biological properties: An updated review.

Food Chem

December 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Food Manufacturing, School of Food Science and Engineering, Foshan University, China; School of Food Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Soy protein is a promising nutritional source with improved functionality and bioactivities due to conjugation with polyphenols (PP)-the conjugates between soy protein and PP held by covalent and noncovalent bonds. Different approaches, including thermodynamics, spectroscopy, and molecular docking simulations, can demonstrate the outcomes and mechanism of these conjugates. The soy protein, PP structure, matrix properties (temperature, pH), and interaction mechanism alter the ζ-potential, secondary structure, thermal stability, and surface hydrophobicity of proteins and also improve the techno-functional properties such as gelling ability, solubility, emulsifying, and foaming properties.

Article Synopsis
  • Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) are increasingly used in biomedicine and agriculture but pose environmental risks, particularly concerning water ecosystems.
  • A study was conducted on grass carp to assess the toxic effects of MgO NPs, with fish exposed to varying concentrations (0.5 mg/L and 0.7 mg/L) over 21 days, while a control group remained unexposed.
  • Results indicated that higher doses of MgO NPs caused significant oxidative stress, DNA damage, and reduced antioxidant enzyme levels in the fish, highlighting adverse impacts on their physiological functions even at low concentrations.
