We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection.

We describe small-angle electron diffraction (SmAED) and Lorentz microscopy using a conventional transmission electron microscope. In SmAED, electron diffraction patterns with a wide-angular range on the order of 1 × 10-2 rad to 1 × 10-7 rad can be obtained. It is demonstrated that magnetic information of nanoscale magnetic microstructures can be obtained by Fresnel imaging, Foucault imaging and SmAED.

Strategic Outlook toward 2030: Japan's Research for Allergy and Immunology (Strategy 2030) is the national research strategy based on Japan's Basic Law on Measures Against Allergic Diseases, a first of its kind worldwide. This strategy was established by a multi-disciplinary committee consisting of administrators of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, young and senior experts from various research societies and associations, and representatives of patient and public groups. Whereas the issues of transition, integration, and international collaboration have yet to be solved in this research realm in Japan, identification of unmet needs, digitization of information and transparent procedures, and strategic planning for complex problems (a process dubbed MIERUKA by the Toyota Way) are crucial to share and tackle the same vision and goals.

In the era of precision medicine, transcriptome analysis of whole gene expression is an essential technology. While DNA microarray has a limited dynamic range and a problem of background hybridization, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has a broader dynamic range and a lower background signal that increase the sensitivity and reproducibility. While transcriptome analyses in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have generally focused on whole peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), analyses of detailed cell subsets have an increased need for understanding the pathophysiology of disease because the involvement of CD4 T cells in the pathogenesis of RA has been established.

Evidence is mounting that the small bodies of our Solar System, such as comets and asteroids, have at least partially inherited their chemical composition from the first phases of the Solar System formation. It then appears that the molecular complexity of these small bodies is most likely related to the earliest stages of star formation. It is therefore important to characterize and to understand how the chemical evolution changes with solar-type protostellar evolution.

Background: Sustained virological response (SVR) rates for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients have drastically improved with the use of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies; however, a small minority of patients still fails to eradicate the virus. We analyzed factors associated with SVR in DAA therapy and the effect of age and liver fibrosis on treatment response.
Methods: Nine hundred and eighteen patients with chronic HCV infection were treated with 24 weeks of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir (DCV + ASV) or 12 weeks of sofosbuvir plus ledipasvir (SOF + LDV), ombitasvir, paritaprevir plus ritonavir (OMB + PTV + r) or sofosbuvir plus ribavirin (SOF + RBV).

Background: Although pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and nucleotide/nucleoside analogue (NA) combination therapy is considered to be optimal for accelerating serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) reduction, the effect is limited, and the best approach to PEG-IFN treatment for chronic hepatitis B patients during long-term NA therapy has yet to be determined.
Methods: A total of 21 hepatitis B e antigen-negative chronic hepatitis B patients whose HBV DNA levels were suppressed to undetectable levels by NA therapy were administrated PEG-IFN-α2a for 48 weeks (sequential therapy: 10, add-on therapy: 11). Factors associated with HBsAg reduction by PEG-IFN therapy were analysed.

A fundamental quest of modern astronomy is to locate the earliest galaxies and study how they influenced the intergalactic medium a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The abundance of star-forming galaxies is known to decline from redshifts of about 6 to 10, but a key question is the extent of star formation at even earlier times, corresponding to the period when the first galaxies might have emerged. Here we report spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD1 , a gravitationally lensed galaxy observed when the Universe was less than four per cent of its present age.

We construct an electron optical system to investigate Bragg diffraction (the crystal lattice plane, 10-2 to 10-3 rad) with the objective lens turned off by adjusting the current in the intermediate lenses. A crossover was located on the selected-area aperture plane. Thus, the dark-field imaging can be performed by using a selected-area aperture to select Bragg diffraction spots.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a severe condition in which liver function rapidly deteriorates in individuals without prior history of liver disease. While most cases result from acetaminophen overdose or viral hepatitis, in up to a third of patients, no clear cause can be identified. We analyzed the transcriptome of detailed CD4 T cell subsets including them after abatacept treatment, and examined the difference among CD4 T cell subsets and identified gene sets that are closely associated disease activity and abatacept treatment. Seven CD4 T cell subsets (naive, Th1, Th17, Th1/17, nonTh1/17, Tfh and Treg) were sorted from PBMCs taken from 10 RA patients and 10 healthy controls, and three RA patients donated samples before and 6 months after abatacept treatment. Paired-end RNA sequencing was performed using HiSeq 2500.

Background: In Japan, daclatasvir (DCV) and asunaprevir (ASV) therapy was the first IFN-free treatment to be approved, and thousands of patients have since been successfully treated, with an SVR rate of around 90%. The converse, however, is that around 10% of patients fail to achieve viral eradication and must be retreated using a different approach. This study is to evaluate treatment efficacy of ledipasvir/sofosbuvir and ribavirin in patients who failed to respond to DCV and ASV therapy.

Combination of sofosbuvir plus ledipasvir therapy has been expected to enhance sustained virological response (SVR) rates in hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 chronic infected patients. We analyzed the emergence of drug resistance-associated variants (RAVs) in treatment failure and changes in lipid profiles in sofosbuvir/ledipasvir-treated patients. A total of 176 patients with chronic HCV genotype 1 infection without decompensated liver cirrhosis were treated with sofosbuvir/ledipasvir for 12 weeks.

Interferon (IFN) inhibits hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication through up-regulation of intrahepatic IFN-stimulated gene expression but also through activation of host immune cells. In the present study, we analyzed the immune cell-mediated antiviral effects of IFN-α using HCV-infected mice.
