Acute Human Bocavirus 1 Infection in Children Hospitalized for Acute Bronchiolitis: A 2-Year Prospective Study.

Background: The objective of this prospective study was to assess the proportion and clinical consequences of human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) replication in children hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis (AB) with HBoV1 DNA in the nasopharynx (NP).

Methods: For this purpose, we detected HBoV1 DNA and mRNA (evidence of viral replication and viable virus) in NP in cases and healthy control children. This research allowed us to distinguish active HBoV1 infections from inactive ones.

Lactococcus phages that belong to the genus Ceduovirus are among the three most frequently isolated phage groups infecting Lactococcus lactis starter strains in dairy plants. In this study, we characterized virulent Lactococcus phage BIM BV-114 isolated from industrial cheese brine in Belarus and identified as Ceduovirus. The bacteriophage demonstrated a relatively short lytic cycle (latent period of 23 ± 5 min, lysis time of 90 ± 5 min), high thermal stability (inactivation after 7 min at 95 °C in skimmed milk) and tolerance to UV radiation (inactivation time - 15 min), indicating adaptation for better persistence in dairy facilities.

Hematopoiesis is maintained by hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells that are located in the bone marrow (BM) where they are embedded within a complex supportive microenvironment consisting of a multitude of various non-hematopoietic and hematopoietic cell types. The BM microenvironment not only regulates steady-state hematopoiesis by provision of growth factors, cytokines, and cell-cell contact but is also an emerging key player during the adaptation to infectious and inflammatory insults (emergency hematopoiesis). Through a combination of gene expression analyses in prospectively isolated non-hematopoietic BM cell populations and various mouse models, we found that BM CXCL12-abundant reticular (CAR) cells are a major source of systemic and local BM interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels during emergency hematopoiesis after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation.

Metal accumulation by Spirulina platensis from synthetic effluents with the following chemical composition: Cr/Fe, Cr/Fe/Ni, Cr/Fe/Ni/Zn, and Cr/Fe/Ni/Zn/Cu during repeated cultivation cycle was investigated. Metal ions in different concentrations were added to the culture medium at the exponential and stationary phases of biomass growth and their uptake by biomass was traced using neutron activation analysis. The role of microRNA (miRNA) in influenza A virus (IAV) host species specificity is not well understood as yet. Here, we show that a host miRNA, miR-1290, is induced through the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway upon IAV infection and is associated with increased viral titers in human cells and ferret animal models. miR-1290 was observed to target and reduce expression of the host vimentin gene.

The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that antimicrobial food additives may alter the composition of human gut microbiota by selectively suppressing the growth of susceptible gut microbes. To explore the influence of antimicrobial food additives on the composition of the human gut microbiota, we examined the susceptibility of both aerobic and anaerobic gut bacteria to sodium benzoate, sodium nitrite, and potassium sorbate, and their combinations, using a broth microdilution method. The enoyl-thioester reductase InhA catalyzes an essential step in fatty acid biosynthesis of and is a key target of antituberculosis drugs to combat multidrug-resistant strains. This has prompted intense interest in the mechanism and intermediates of the InhA reaction.
