Both basal and stress-induced secretory activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are distinctly modified in lactating females. On the one hand, it aims to meet the physiological demands of the mother, and on the other hand, the appropriate and stable plasma cortisol level is one of the essential factors for the proper offspring development. Specific adaptations of HPA axis activity to lactation have been extensively studied in several animal species and humans, providing interesting data on the HPA axis plasticity mechanism.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) in Polish high-yielding dairy herds. Also, the relationships between the chemical composition of the diet and the feed particle size, ruminal pH and the occurrence of this metabolic disease and the fermentation profile were determined. The effects of indigestible carbohydrates, protein type, and protein level on large intestine health were examined in rats. For 21 days, 12 groups of six 12-week-old male Wistar rats were fed diets with casein (CAS), or potato protein concentrate (PPC), providing 14% (lower protein level; LP), or 20% (higher protein level; HP) protein, and containing cellulose, resistant potato starch, or pectin. Suckling by newborns induces a surge of lactogenic hormones, that is prolactin and growth hormone (GH), in mother's body, with endogenous opioid peptide (EOP) participating in generation of this surge. The aim of the current study was to investigate which types of opioid receptors are involved in generation of the GH surge in ewes during suckling. A series of intracerebroventricular infusions of opioid receptors antagonists: naloxone (for all types of receptors), naloxonazine (specific for μ receptor) and 5'-guanidinonaltrindole (GNTI--specific for κ receptor) and the vehicle (control) were performed in nursing sheep during the fifth week of lactation.

Salsolinol, a dopamine-related compound and prolactin-producing cells were found in the ovine hypothalamus. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that salsolinol, acting from the CNS level, is able to stimulate pituitary prolactin release as well as prolactin mRNA expression in the anterior pituitary cells (AP) and in the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) in lactating ewes. To increase our knowledge concerning the central and peripheral regulation of reproduction in mammals a series of studies were performed. In the first experiment, we found that exogenous leptin altered the activity of the hypothalmo-pituitary-gonadotropic axis in sheep during insufficient feeding. Plasma levels of the PGF(2alpha) metabolite 15-keto-13, 14-dihydroprostaglandin F(2alpha) were determined postpartum in 51 primiparous Black and White Lowland cows. The highest geometric mean was 1702 pmol/l on day 3 and lowest 190 pmol/l on day 21. It should be noted that variation between animals in the concentration of the metabolite is high.
