Spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA10) is an autosomal dominant (AD) neurodegenerative disorder prevalent in the Americas, particularly in Mexico. Clinical manifestations include progressive ataxia and epilepsy. However, it can exhibit wide phenotypic variability and even reduced penetrance.

Sirtuin 7 (SIRT7), a member of the sirtuin family of NAD+-dependent deacetylases, plays a vital role in cancer, exhibiting context-dependent functions across various malignancies. Our study investigates the role of SIRT7 depletion in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) progression. In vitro and 3D organotypic models demonstrated that SIRT7 knock-out attenuates cancer cell viability, proliferation, and motility as well as induces downregulation of migration- and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related gene expression.

Importance: There are limited data to guide practices to reduce surgical site infections following sacral neuromodulation; however, many surgeons prescribe prophylactic postoperative antibiotics after device implantation.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the proportion of patients with sacral neuromodulation device-associated surgical site infections after use of prophylactic postoperative antibiotics versus none.

Study Design: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing sacral neuromodulation device implantation at 11 institutions from January 2014 to December 2023, comparing outcomes in patients who did versus did not receive prophylactic postoperative antibiotic treatment.

BK Polyomavirus nephropathy (PVN) with definitive diagnosis on biopsy, presents incidentally or with varying degrees of graft dysfunction. Banff working group on PVN has proposed a novel scoring system in renal biopsies, to identify patients with higher risk of graft failure. In this study, we attempted to validate the Banff scoring system at index biopsies and correlate with a novel index score, plasma BK-virus load and graft outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • * Two distinct macrophage populations exist in the testes of juveniles and adults, each with specific functions and locations: interstitial macrophages are connected to Leydig cells, while peritubular macrophages surround seminiferous tubules.
  • * The origins of testicular macrophages are debated, with some research indicating they come from the yolk sac and others suggesting they derive from monocytes in the bone marrow.

This case report aims to describe the clinical presentation, imaging findings, diagnostic challenges, and management of a patient with a cerebellopontine angle lesion. A 63-year-old woman presented with progressive headaches, tinnitus, right ear pressure, and dizziness. Initial imaging studies (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) suggested either a thrombosed aneurysm or a lipoma.

Invertebrate and vertebrate species have many unusual cellular structures, such as long- or short-lived cell-in-cell structures and coenocytes. Coenocytes (often incorrectly described as syncytia) are multinuclear cells derived, unlike syncytia, not from the fusion of multiple cells but from multiple nuclear divisions without cytokinesis. An example of a somatic coenocyte is the coenocytic blastoderm in An astonishing property of coenocytes is the ability to differentiate the nuclei sharing a common cytoplasm into different subpopulations with different fate trajectories.

Introduction: Semi-quantitative scoring of various parameters in renal biopsy is accepted as an important tool to assess disease activity and prognostication. There are concerns on the impact of interobserver variability in its prognostic utility, generating a need for computerized quantification.

Methods: We studied 94 patients with renal biopsies, 45 with native diseases and 49 transplant patients with index biopsies for Polyomavirus nephropathy.

Gadolinium is a component of the MRI contrast agent Dotarem. Although Dotarem is the least toxic among MRI contrasts used, gadolinium present in Dotarem accumulates for many years in various organs and tissues exerting toxic effects. We showed previously that gadolinium remains in macrophages for at least 7 days after exposure to Dotarem.

Quantitative and structural changes of blood platelet cytoskeleton proteins in multiple sclerosis (MS).

J Autoimmun

May 2024

University of Lodz, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Department of General Biochemistry, Pomorska 141/143, 90-236 Lodz, Poland.

Epidemiological studies show that cardiovascular events related to platelet hyperactivity remain the leading causes of death among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Quantitative or structural changes of platelet cytoskeleton alter their morphology and function. Here, we demonstrated, for the first time, the structural changes in MS platelets that may be related to their hyperactivity.

December 2023

Mercia Bakouetila-Martin is a physical therapist and outreach coordinator at Spero Rehab, 10902 Shettleston Dr, Richmond TX 77407 ( ). Please address all correspondence to Mercia Bakouetila-Martin.

Introduction: Racial or ethnic minorities are underrepresented in many health care professions, including physical therapy. Understanding the experiences of minority students in graduate education provides insight into how physical therapy educational programs can promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are factors that have been shown to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively analyze and describe the lived experiences of Black student physical therapists (PT) in Texas.

Germline and Somatic Cell Syncytia in Insects.

Results Probl Cell Differ

February 2024

Department of Developmental Biology and Invertebrate Morphology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Krakow, Poland.

Syncytia are common in the animal and plant kingdoms both under normal and pathological conditions. They form through cell fusion or division of a founder cell without cytokinesis. A particular type of syncytia occurs in invertebrate and vertebrate gametogenesis when the founder cell divides several times with partial cytokinesis producing a cyst (nest) of germ line cells connected by cytoplasmic bridges.

Recent studies suggest that the content of immune components in milk is influenced by the mother's health and also by the infant she feeds. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a child's respiratory tract infection on the cellular composition of breast milk (neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and their subpopulations). Twenty-six breastfeeding mothers whose children were hospitalized for respiratory tract infections were enrolled in the study.

The Banff community summoned the TMA Banff Working Group to develop minimum diagnostic criteria (MDC) and recommendations for renal transplant TMA (Tx-TMA) diagnosis, which currently lacks standardized criteria. Using the Delphi method for consensus generation, 23 nephropathologists (panelists) with >3 years of diagnostic experience with Tx-TMA were asked to list light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopic, clinical and laboratory criteria and differential diagnoses for Tx-TMA. Delphi was modified to include 2 validations rounds with histological evaluation of whole slide images of 37 transplant biopsies (28 TMA and 9 non-TMA).
