Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease, and RA interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a severe complication of RA. This investigation aims to determine the effect and underlying mechanism of osthole (OS), which could be extracted from , , and plants and evaluate the role of transglutaminase 2 (TGM2) in RA and RA-ILD. In this work, OS downregulated TGM2 to exert its additive effect with methotrexate and suppress the proliferation, migration, and invasion of RA-fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) by attenuating NF-κB signaling, resulting in the suppression of RA progression.

Serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA is a new serological indicator reflecting viral replication with good clinical application prospects. This study aimed to clarify the dynamic changes of serum HBV RNA levels and the quasispecies of HBV RNA virus-like particles in nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs)-experienced chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients harboring NAs-resistant mutations and their identifiable effects on NAs resistance. We included CHB patients who were on long-term NAs treatment and with HBV DNA rebound.

Background: This study examined the postoperative follow-up attendance of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, evaluated some of the factors associated with it, and assessed its relationship with early detection of postoperative disease progression.
Methods: An exploratory retrospective cohort study of 430 OSCC patients was conducted. We examined associations of follow-up attendance within the first year after surgery with selected demographic and clinical factors, and with early detection of disease progression.

In oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), a highly aggressive and frequently lethal malignancy, the role and action mechanism of the microtubule regulatory protein CDK5RAP2 have not been fully understood. Here, we show that CDK5RAP2 is highly expressed in OSCC and its expression correlates with clinical stage and lymph node metastasis of the disease. The expression of CDK5RAP2 is regulated by the Wnt signaling pathway.

Background: The renal risk score (RRS) is a useful tool to predict end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). The current study aimed to validate the predictive performance of RRS and to further modify this model in Chinese AAV patients.
Methods: Two hundred and seventy-two patients diagnosed with AAV confirmed by renal biopsies were retrospectively enrolled from a single center.

Intracerebral hemorrhage is often accompanied by oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species, which causes abnormal mitochondrial function and secondary reactive oxygen species generation. This creates a vicious cycle leading to reactive oxygen species accumulation, resulting in progression of the pathological process. Therefore, breaking the cycle to inhibit reactive oxygen species accumulation is critical for reducing neuronal death after intracerebral hemorrhage.

Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) can be effectively applied for cardio-protection. Here, to clarify whether RIC exerts myocardial protection via aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), we established a myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) model in C57BL/6 and ALDH2 knockout (ALDH2-KO) mice and treated them with RIC. Echocardiography and single-cell contraction experiments showed that RIC significantly improved myocardial function and alleviated I/R injury in C57BL/6 mice but did not exhibit its cardioprotective effects in ALDH2-KO mice.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe genotype-phenotype associations and novel insights into genetic characteristics in a trio-based cohort of inherited eye diseases (IEDs).
Methods: To determine the etiological role of de novo mutations (DNMs) and genetic profile in IEDs, we retrospectively reviewed a large cohort of proband-parent trios of Chinese origin. The patients underwent a detailed examination and was clinically diagnosed by an ophthalmologist.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent programmed cell death characterized by reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation and resultant membrane damage. Recent research has elucidated the mechanism of ferroptosis and investigated the relationship between ferroptosis and various diseases, including degenerative diseases, cancer, and inflammation. Ferroptosis is associated with inflammation-related intestinal diseases such as colitis and colitis-associated cancer.

Purpose: To develop and validate models to predict who will develop myopia in the following year based on cycloplegic refraction or ocular biometry and to identify thresholds of premyopia.
Methods: Prospective longitudinal data of nonmyopic children at baseline from the Guangzhou Twins Eye Study and the Guangzhou Outdoor Activity Longitudinal Study were used as the training set, and the Singapore Cohort Study of the Risk factors for Myopia study formed the external validation set. Age, sex, cycloplegic refraction, ocular biometry, uncorrected visual acuity, and parental myopia were integrated into 3 logistic regression models to predict the onset of myopia in the following year.

Background: Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and perineural invasion (PNI) can indicate poor survival outcomes in colorectal cancer, but few studies have focused on stage III colon cancer. The current study aimed to confirm the prognostic value of LVI and PNI and identify patients who could benefit from a complete duration of adjuvant chemotherapy based on the two pathological factors.
Methods: We enrolled 402 consecutive patients with stage III colon cancer who received colon tumor resection from November 2007 to June 2016 at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center.

Gonad somatic cells acquire sex-specific fates during sex determination. In XX gonad, a subset of somatic cells expresses Foxl2 after sex determination which is considered the progenitor of granulosa cells. However, whether these cells also contribute to other cell types at later developmental stages is unknown.

ESCC is a highly malignant tumor, and its morbidity and mortality in China account for more than 50% of the world's total rates. As effective treatments are lacking, the 5-year survival rate of patients does not exceed 30%. CAR-T-cell-based immunotherapy has emerged as one of the most promising cancer treatments; however, there are relatively fewer reports regarding its application for ESCC.

Recent evidence has indicated that circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel type of regulatory RNA, play important roles in the development and progression of various cancers. However, the potential regulatory roles and molecular mechanisms of circRNAs in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remain largely unclear. Here, we explored circRNA expression profiles in 10 paired samples of RCC (including cancer tissues and surrounding tissues) from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets GSE124453 and GSE108735.

Background: Cartilage tissue engineering is a promising strategy for treating cartilage damage. Matrix formation by adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), which are one type of seed cell used for cartilage tissue engineering, decreases in the late stage of induced chondrogenic differentiation , which seriously limits research on ADSCs and their application.
Aim: To improve the chondrogenic differentiation efficiency of ADSCs , and optimize the existing chondrogenic induction protocol.

Inflammation is a common medical complication in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, which plays significant roles in tumor progression and immunosuppression. However, the influence of inflammatory conditions on the tumor response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) is incompletely understood. Here we show that in a patient with high microsatellite instability (MSI-H) CRC and a local inflammatory condition, the primary tumor progresses but its liver metastasis regresses upon Pembrolizumab treatment.

Tumor suppressor protein P53 induces cycle arrest and apoptosis by mediating the transcriptional expression of its target genes. Mutations causing conformational abnormalities and post-translational modifications that promote degradation are the main reasons for the loss of P53 function in tumor cells. Reporter gene assays that can scientifically reflect the biological function can help discover the mechanism and therapeutic strategies that restore P53 function.
