Institute of Acoustics, School of Physics Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China. Electronic address:

Artificial structures provide an efficient method to generate acoustic vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) essential for applications ranging from object manipulation to acoustic communication. However, their flexibility in terms of chirality control has thus far been limited by the lack of reconfigurability and degrees of freedom like spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that this restriction can be lifted by controlling the individual on-off states of two coherent monopolar sources inside a passive parity-time-symmetric ring cavity at an exceptional point where the counter-propagating waves coalesce into one chiral eigenmode.

Valley pseudospin is an electronic degree of freedom that promises highly efficient information processing applications. However, valley-polarized excitons usually have short pico-second lifetimes, which limits the room-temperature applicability of valleytronic devices. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature valley transistors that operate by generating free carrier valley polarization with a long lifetime.

Memory transistors based on two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric semiconductors are intriguing for next-generation in-memory computing. To date, several 2D ferroelectric materials have been unveiled, among which 2D InSe is the most promising, as all the paraelectric (β), ferroelectric (α) and antiferroelectric (β') phases are found in 2D quintuple layers. However, the large-scale synthesis of 2D InSe films with the desired phase is still absent, and the stability for each phase remains obscure.

Reconfigurable mode converters are essential components in efficient higher-order mode sources for on-chip multimode applications. We propose an on-chip reconfigurable silicon waveguide mode conversion scheme based on the nonvolatile and low-loss optical phase change material antimony triselenide (SbSe). The key mode conversion region is formed by embedding a tapered SbSe layer into the silicon waveguide along the propagation direction and further cladding with graphene and aluminum oxide layers as the microheater.

Small Molecules Containing Amphoteric Imidazole Motifs as Sensitizers for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: An Overview.

Top Curr Chem (Cham)

September 2022

Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology and Research Institute for Smart Energy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, People's Republic of China.

Organic dyes, porphyrins and inorganic complexes containing imidazole (IM) motifs have been demonstrated as a new class of sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Particularly, the amphoteric nature of IM-based motifs allows them to be used as donors (D), auxiliary donors (D), linker/branch (π), or acceptors (A) in D-π-A-based organic dyes and porphyrins and also employed as cyclometalated heteroleptic and ancillary ligands in the Ru(II) and Ir(III) complexes for DSSCs. It is noteworthy that the introduction of IM chromophores in the dyes of D-π-A configuration can improve the light-harvesting properties and prohibit the charge recombination reactions due to the extension of the π-conjugated structures and hydrophobic nature.

Broadband impedance modulation via non-local acoustic metamaterials.

Natl Sci Rev

Institute of Acoustics, School of Physics Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China.

Causality of linear time-invariant systems inherently defines the wave-matter interaction process in wave physics. This principle imposes strict constraints on the interfacial response of materials on various physical platforms. A typical consequence is that a delicate balance has to be struck between the conflicting bandwidth and geometric thickness when constructing a medium with desired impedance, which makes it challenging to realize broadband impedance modulation with compact structures.

Optical techniques offer a wide variety of applications as light-matter interactions provide extremely sensitive mechanisms to probe or treat target media. Most of these implementations rely on the usage of ballistic or quasi-ballistic photons to achieve high spatial resolution. However, the inherent scattering nature of light in biological tissues or tissue-like scattering media constitutes a critical obstacle that has restricted the penetration depth of non-scattered photons and hence limited the implementation of most optical techniques for wider applications.

Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology and Research Institute for Smart Energy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, P. R. China.

The electrochemical reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CORR) to the desired feedstocks with a high faradaic efficiency (FE) and high stability at a high current density is of great importance but challenging owing to its poor electrochemical stability and competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Guided by theoretical calculations, herein, a series of novel metalloporphyrin-linked mercurated graphynes (Hg-MTPP) were designed as electrocatalysts for CORR, since the mercurated graphyne blocks induce a high HER overpotential. Notably, Hg-CoTPP was synthesized and produced a maximum CO FE of 95.
