This mini-review highlights some recent progress in the engineering of single-atom catalysts (SACs) through metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and derivatives. The inherent molecular and chemical specificities within the MOFs and derivatives can offer stabilisation of the SACs with high atomic isolation and dispersion. As MOFs are often considered an infinite array of self-assembled molecular catalysts, specifically designed structures can provide further functionalities to suit the needs of different catalytic applications.

Electronic address:

A forward genetic Sleeping Beauty (SB) insertional mutagenesis screen, followed by high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, was used to identify driver genes responsible for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-associated metastasis. Using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify transposon-endogenous transcriptome fusion genes, the phylogenetic lineage between the parental liver tumor and secondary metastasis can be determined to provide mechanistic insight to genetic changes involved in the metastatic evolution process. In the current study, two novel candidate genes were identified to be potentially involved in HCC-associated metastatic progression, canopy FGF signaling regulator 2 (Cnpy2) and actinin alpha 2 (Actn2).

The formation, propagation, and structure of nanoscale cracks determine the failure mechanics of engineered materials. Herein, we have captured, with atomic resolution and in real time, unit cell-by-unit cell lattice-trapped cracking in two-dimensional (2D) rhenium disulfide (ReS_{2}) using in situ aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our real time observations of atomic configurations and corresponding strain fields in propagating cracks directly reveal the atomistic fracture mechanisms.

Tumor cells metastasize to distal organs mainly through hematogenous dissemination, where they experience considerable levels of fluid shear stress. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in tumor metastasis. However, how fluid shear stress influences the EMT phenotype of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in suspension has not been fully understood.

Spontaneously Ordered Hierarchical Two-Dimensional Wrinkle Patterns in Two-Dimensional Materials.

Nano Lett

November 2020

Department of Chemistry and Center of Super-Diamond and Advanced Films (COSDAF), City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong China.

Achieving two-dimensionally (2D) ordered surface wrinkle patterns is still challenging not only for the atomic-thick 2D materials but also in general for all soft surfaces. Normally disordered 2D wrinkle patterns on isotropic surfaces can be rendered via biaxial straining. Here, we report that the 1D and 2D ordered wrinkle patterns in 2D materials can be produced by sequential wrinkling controlled by thermal straining and vertical spatial confinement.

Hallux valgus is a common foot problem affecting nearly one in every four adults. Generalized ligament laxity was proposed as the intrinsic cause or risk factor toward the development of the deformity which was difficult to be investigated by cohort clinical trials. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the isolated influence of generalized ligament laxity on the deterioration using computer simulation (finite element analysis).

Ligand Control of Palladium-Catalyzed Site-Selective α- and γ-Arylation of α,β-Unsaturated Ketones with (Hetero)aryl Halides.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2020

Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology and State Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

This study describes the first palladium-catalyzed, site-selective α- and γ-arylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones with (hetero)aryl halides. A wide range of hetero(aryl)halides coupled with α,β-unsaturated ketones, and transformation into the arylated products proceeded with excellent to good yields. The site selectivity of the reaction is switchable by simply changing the phosphine ligand to access either α-arylated or γ-arylated products in good to excellent yields by using a low catalyst loading, and the method demonstrates good functional-group compatibility.

Zero index metamaterials have shown the ability to achieve total transmission or reflection by embedding particular defects with various effective parameters. Here, we present that tunable sound transmission can be realized by configuring a subwavelength-sized dopant inside zero index acoustic metamaterials. Despite its small spatial signature, the dopant is able to strongly interact with the acoustic waves inside the whole zero index metamaterials.

Solar-driven overall water splitting based on metal sulfide semiconductor photocatalysts remains as a challenge owing to the strong charge recombination and deficient catalytic active sites. Additionally, significant inhibition of back reactions, especially the oxidation of sulfide ions during the photocatalytic water oxidation catalysis, is an arduous task that requires an efficient photogenerated hole transfer dynamics. Here, a ternary dumbbell-shaped catalyst based on RuO/CdS/MoS with spatially separated catalytic sites is developed to achieve simultaneous production of hydrogen and oxygen under simulated solar-light without any sacrificial agents.

Quasi one-dimensional van der Waals gold selenide with strong interchain interaction and giant magnetoresistance.

Sci Bull (Beijing)

September 2020

Department of Applied Physics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China; The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen Research Institute, Shenzhen 518054, China. Electronic address:

The atomic structure of quasi one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials can be regarded as the stacking of atomic chains to form thin flakes or nanoribbons, which substantially differentiates them from typical two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and 1D nanotube/nanowire array. Here we present our studies on quasi 1D gold selenide (AuSe) that possesses highly anisotropic crystal structure, excellent electrical conductivity, giant magnetoresistance, and unusual reentrant metallic behavior. The low in-plane symmetry of AuSe gives rise to its high anisotropy of vibrational behavior.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

September 2020

Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong 999077, P. R. China.

The ways to overcome surface charge recombination and poor interface contact are still the central challenges for the development of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). [6,6]-Phenyl C butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is commonly employed in PSCs, but it has some disadvantages including high charge recombination and poor surface coverage. Therefore, the addition of an interfacial engineering layer showing efficient surface passivation, electron extraction, and excellent interface contact can solve the above problems.
