Copolymerization with 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) is developed for precise substitution of one nitrogen with carbon atom in the triazine ring of polymeric g-C3N4. Direct incorporation of C4N2 ring from TAP into the network retains the structural features of g-C3N4, but induces the rolling-up of g-C3N4 sheets into tubular configuration. The band gap energy is narrowed from 2.

Phonotactics Constraints and the Spoken Word Recognition of Chinese Words in Speech.

J Psycholinguist Res

April 2016

Department of Psychological Studies, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, 10 Lo Ping Road, Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong SAR.

Two word-spotting experiments were conducted to examine the question of whether native Cantonese listeners are constrained by phonotactics information in spoken word recognition of Chinese words in speech. Because no legal consonant clusters occurred within an individual Chinese word, this kind of categorical phonotactics information of Chinese word may be most likely to cue native Cantonese listeners the locations of possible word boundaries in speech. The observed results from the two word-spotting experiments confirmed this prediction.

Many scales contain both positively and negatively worded items. Reverse recoding of negatively worded items might not be enough for them to function as positively worded items do. In this study, we commented on the drawbacks of existing approaches to wording effect in mixed-format scales and used bi-factor item response theory (IRT) models to test the assumption of reverse coding and evaluate the magnitude of the wording effect.

Article Synopsis
  • A significant portion of rural residents in China still rely on solid fuels for cooking and heating, but clean energy options like electricity and liquid petroleum gas are gaining traction.
  • Research conducted in rural Henan showed that indoor air pollution levels from particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) are notably higher in winter than in autumn, with specific metals also showing increased concentrations.
  • Transitioning from coal to cleaner energy sources like electricity could reduce exposure to these harmful particulates by a significant percentage, indicating a potential pathway towards better indoor air quality in rural areas.

Human health risk assessment of soil dioxin/furans contamination and dioxin-like activity determined by ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase bioassay.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2015

Consortium on Health, Environment, Education and Research (CHEER), and Department of Science and Environmental Studies, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Tai Po, Hong Kong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the health risks linked to converting agricultural land in Hong Kong to other uses, focusing on levels of hazardous chemicals called PCDD/Fs.
  • Results showed that soils from open burning sites (OBS) and electronic waste burning sites (EW (OBS)) presented significant non-cancer risks for both adults and children due to accidental soil ingestion.
  • The research highlighted a strong correlation between biologically measured dioxin concentrations and chemically derived toxic equivalent concentrations, suggesting that higher levels of PCDD/Fs could lead to increased harmful activity in the soil.

Defensive medicine describes physicians' behavioral response to threats from medical malpractice litigation. Previous studies have found widespread practice of defensive medicine that is responsible for the global escalation of health care costs. Defying the traditional explanations, this study, with a case of a Chinese city, reveals that in a country where medical malpractice lawsuits are rare, physicians' self-perceived threats from patients may constitute a major reason for defensive practices.
