Mammals withstand frequent and prolonged fasting periods due to hepatic production of glucose and ketone bodies. Because the fasting response is transcriptionally regulated, we asked whether enhancer dynamics impose a transcriptional program during recurrent fasting and whether this generates effects distinct from a single fasting bout. We found that mice undergoing alternate-day fasting (ADF) respond profoundly differently to a following fasting bout compared to mice first experiencing fasting.

Purpose: To identify factors responsible for variation in health among married individuals, we investigated the independent associations of gaps in spousal age and education (or "heterogamy") with all-cause and cause-specific mortality as well as with survival of cancer patients.

The aim of this study was to analyze the biological role of different transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) receptor splice variants in ovarian carcinoma (OC). Specific receptor variant knockouts (KO) were prepared using the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system in two OC cell lines, TβRI variant 1 (TβRIv1) KO in ES-2 cells and TβRII variant 1 (TβRIIv1) KO in OVCAR-8 cells. Patients that undergo bariatric surgery experience weight loss and a reduction in the plasma levels of the hepatic enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). We used the Israeli national bariatric registry, which includes demographic, clinical, and biochemical data on 19,403 patients, of which 1335 patients had two-year follow-up data on ALT, AST, A1C, and BMI, to test the dependence of the reduction in the levels of ALT and AST on weight loss. Bariatric surgeries may lead to an improvement in metabolic fatty liver disease, and a reduction in the levels of the hepatic enzyme Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT). We compared the effects of Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG), Roux en Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) on the levels of ALT by analysis of two-year follow-up data from 4980 patients in the Israeli Bariatric Registry that included laboratory tests and demographic information. Pre-operative characteristics of patients, and particularly levels of liver enzymes, were similar across surgery types.

The course of infection by SARS-CoV-2 frequently includes a long asymptomatic period, followed in some individuals by an immune dysregulation period that may lead to complications and immunopathology-induced death. This course of disease suggests that the virus often evades detection by the innate immune system. Background: microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) are small noncoding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level and fine-tune gene functions. Widespread microRNA (miRNA) repression is a phenomenon observed in mammals after exposure to cigarette smoke and in many types of cancer. A comprehensive reduction in miRNA expression after treatment with the hormone estrogen has also previously been described. Here, we reveal a conserved association of miRNA downregulation after estrogen exposure in zebrafish, mouse, and human breast cancer cell line, with a high guanine content in the terminal loop sequences of their precursors, and offer a possible link between estrogen-related miRNA-adducts formation and carcinogenesis.

Elucidating the mechanisms of estrogens-induced immunomodulation in teleost fish is of great importance due to the observed worldwide continuing decrease in pristine environments. However, little is know about the immunotoxicological consequences of exposure to these chemicals in fish, or of the mechanisms through which these effects are mediated. In this review, we summarize the results showing estrogens (natural or synthetic) acting through estrogen receptors and regulating specific target genes, also through microRNAs (miRNAs), leading to modulation of the immune functioning.

Alteration in the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) is associated with oncogenesis and cancer progression. In this review we aim to suggest that elevated levels of estrogens and their metabolites inside the lungs as a result of cigarette smoke exposure can cause widespread repression of miRNA and contribute to lung tumor development. Anti-estrogenic compounds, such as the components of cruciferous vegetables, can attenuate this effect and potentially reduce the risk of lung cancer (LC) among smokers.
