Auxin treatment reduces inflorescences number and delays bud development in the alternate bearing Citrus cultivar Murcott mandarin.

Tree Physiol

January 2025

Department of Fruit Tree Sciences, The Institute of Plant Sciences, Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Rishon LeZion, Israel.

Specific cultivars of many commercial fruit tree undergo cycles of heavy fruit load (ON-crop) one year, followed by low fruit load (OFF-crop) the next (termed alternate bearing). Fruit load may affect flowering at various developmental stages, and its presence is suggested to generate a flowering-inhibitory signal. In a previous report, we showed that the presence of fruit induces polar auxin transport from the fruit into the stem, interfering with indole acetic acid (IAA) release from the bud, and thus elevating its levels in the bud meristem.

Sleeve gastrectomy reveals the plasticity of the human gastric epithelium.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer Research, The Institute for Medical Research Israel Canada, The Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Gastrin is secreted following a rise in gastric pH, leading to gastric acid secretion. Sleeve gastrectomy (SG), a bariatric surgery where 80% of the gastric corpus is excised, presents a challenge for gastric pH homeostasis. Using histology, and single-cell RNA sequencing of the gastric epithelium in 12 women, we observed that SG is associated with an increase in a sub-population of acid-secreting parietal cells that overexpress respiratory enzymes and an increase in histamine-secreting enterochromaffin-like cells (ECLs).

The Institute for Drug Research of the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

RNA-targeting small molecules, particularly RIBOnuclease TArgeting Chimeras (RIBOTACs), represent a powerful and promising therapeutic approach by selectively degrading RNAs through ribonuclease (RNase) recruitment. Despite their potential, the development of effective RNase recruitment tools is still in its early stages and remains a critical area of research. Ribonuclease L (RNase L) is a key ribonuclease targeted by RIBOTACs, yet the tools available for studying RNase L are limited.

is a foodborne pathogen commonly found in agricultural facilities; its prevalence, as well as increasing levels of disinfectant- and antibiotic-resistance, has significant costs for agriculture as well as human health. In an effort to identify potential new inhibitors of on abiotic surfaces, we developed a biomolecule screen of nutrient-type compounds because nutrients would have lower toxicity in animal facilities and bacterial nutrient utilization pathways might prove less susceptible to the development of bacterial resistance. After screening 285 nutrient-type compounds, we identified ten that significantly inhibited the ability of to colonize a plastic surface.

The skin, our first line of defense against external threats, combines a physical barrier and a rich microbial community. Disruptions of this community, for example, due to infectious injury, have been linked to a decrease in bacteria diversity and to mild to severe pathological conditions. Although some progress has been made in the field, possibilities/procedures for restoring the skin microbiome are still far from ideal.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown success in predicting neural signals associated with narrative processing, but their approach to integrating context over large timescales differs fundamentally from that of the human brain. In this study, we show how the brain, unlike LLMs that process large text windows in parallel, integrates short-term and long-term contextual information through an incremental mechanism. Using fMRI data from 219 participants listening to spoken narratives, we first demonstrate that LLMs predict brain activity effectively only when using short contextual windows of up to a few dozen words.

International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology: The involvement of the endocannabinoid system in metabolic and inflammatory responses in dairy cows during negative energy balance.

J Dairy Sci

January 2025

Department of Ruminant Science, Institute of Animal Sciences, ARO Volcani Institute, Israel; Department of Animal Science, The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rehovot, Israel.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism, immune function and reproduction in mammals. The ECS is consisted of the endocannabinoid (eCB) ligands, enzymes, and cannabinoid receptors. In mammals, the cannabinoid-1 receptor (CB1/CNR1) is expressed in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues; and its activation increases anabolic processes.

Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation from late pregnancy to early lactation attenuates the endocannabinoid system and immune proteome in preovulatory follicles and endometrium of Holstein dairy cows.

J Dairy Sci

January 2025

Department of Ruminant Science, Institute of Animal Sciences, Agricultural Research Organization, Volcani Institute, Rishon LeZion, Israel. Electronic address:

Activation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) elicits negative effects on the reproductive system in mammals. Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid (FA) supplementation lowers ECS activation and has anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, we hypothesized that supplementing cows with n-3 FA will downregulate components of the ECS and immune system in preovulatory follicles and in the endometrium.
