The importance of proper naming - A review of Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN).

Asian J Psychiatr

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry, Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer, Israel; Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel. Electronic address:

Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN) is a pharmacologically-driven classification of psychotropics, aiming to revise the current indication-based classification (antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics etc.). Whereas the number of psychotropics has risen dramatically over the years, the current nomenclature preserves a rather narrow categorization that overlooks the rich neurobiological knowledge accumulated to date.

"I remember most of my family seeing it": The presence of others during child physical abuse, as conveyed in forensic interviews with Israeli children.

Fam Process

September 2024

Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Work, The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, The Haruv Institute, Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Work, Mount Scopus Campus, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Child physical abuse is often perceived as a crime perpetrated within the family and out of sight. However, recent studies have indicated the presence of others during incidents of physical abuse. The current study was designed to examine the experiences and perceptions of children who were physically abused in their families concerning the presence of others, as conveyed during their forensic interviews.

Ontogeny of immunity and natural viral infection in Apis mellifera drones and workers.

J Invertebr Pathol

July 2024

Department of Entomology, Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Institute, Israel. Electronic address:

The most common viral diseases affecting honey bees (Apis mellifera) in Israel include deformed wing viruses (DWV-A and DWV-B) and acute paralysis viruses (ABPV and IAPV). These viruses are transmitted within and between colonies, both horizontally and vertically. All members of the colony contribute to this transmission, on the other hand individual and social immunity, particularly hygienic behaviour, may affect the outcome of the process.

Spectral measurements play a vital role in understanding laser-plasma interactions. The ability to accurately measure the spectrum of radiation sources is crucial for unraveling the underlying physics. In this article, we introduce a novel approach that significantly enhances the efficiency of binary sinusoidal transmission grating spectrometers .

Photosynthetic organisms adapt to changing light conditions by manipulating their light harvesting complexes. Biophysical, biochemical, physiological and genetic aspects of these processes are studied extensively. The structural basis for these studies is lacking.

Current sequencing technology allows for the relatively affordable generation of highly contiguous genomes. Technological advances have made it possible for researchers to investigate the consequences of diverse sorts of genomic variants, such as gene gain and loss. With the extraordinary number of high-quality genomes now available, we take stock of how these genomic variants impact phenotypic evolution.

Evidence indicates that the religious beliefs of patients, potential donors, family members, and healthcare professionals play an important role in deciding to donate an organ. We aim to summarize the religious views of Christians, Muslims, and Jews on organ donation contributing to the decision-making process. Different approaches to this topic worldwide are presented, providing helpful information for medical professionals.

Background: Food insecurity (FI) and poor health can turn into a vicious cycle with detrimental effects, especially in the elderly, however, few studies have examined the relationship between FI and health in this age group.

Objectives: We investigated associations of FI with physical and mental health and health behaviors among community-dwelling elderly.

Methods: We used nationally representative, cross-sectional data from the 2014-2015 Israel National Health and Nutrition Survey of the Elderly (Rav Mabat Zahav) on FI, sociodemographic characteristics, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), disability, self-assessed physical, oral, and mental health for 1006 individuals aged ≥65 y.

Background: Kidney and liver transplant recipients may be at a high risk of contracting acute COVID-19 due to chronic immunosuppression and comorbidities. These patients receive combinations of immunosuppressive drugs, altering their innate and adaptive immunity, thus, rendering them more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections and higher mortality. Kidney and liver transplant recipients frequently exhibit one or several risk factors, increasing the risk for unfavorable outcomes.

Signaling networks are redeployed across different developmental times and places to generate phenotypic diversity from a limited genetic toolkit. Hormone signaling networks in particular have well-studied roles in multiple developmental processes. In insects, the ecdysone pathway controls critical events in late embryogenesis and throughout post-embryonic development.

Large-scale FRET simulations reveal the control parameters of phycobilisome light-harvesting complexes.

J R Soc Interface

November 2022

Department of Plant and Environmental Science, The Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Phycobilisomes (PBS) are massive structures that absorb and transfer light energy to photochemical reaction centres. Among the range of light harvesting systems, PBS are considered to be excellent solutions for absorption cross-sections but relatively inefficient energy transferring systems. This is due to the combination of a large number of chromophores with intermediate coupling distances.

Introduction: Procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) is the standard of care for many procedures in the pediatric emergency department (PED). Although generally performed by skilled PED physicians, in Israeli PEDs, during nighttime hours, it is mainly performed by pediatric residents. The safety of PSA by residents is considered comparable yet has not been evaluated regarding nighttime performance.

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic may cause significant morbidity and mortality in adults, yet severe cases are rare among children. The indirect impact of the pandemic on health care delivery in general and pediatric emergency department (PED) visits in particular has been widely reported.

Aims: To assess the impact of the pandemic and the social restrictions imposed in its wake on PED visits and hospitalization rates in our Israeli medical center.

Background: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading reversible risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality. Screening is currently based on office blood pressure measurement (OBPM) - a method that is neither sensitive nor specific in detecting true HTN. Home blood pressure monitoring, which is often used to confirm and follow-up the diagnosis of HTN, is limited in its ability to detect certain blood pressure (BP) patterns that are harmful, and not covered by Israeli health insurers.

A longitudinal study on public policy and the health of in-house caregivers in Europe.

Health Policy

April 2021

Girona Biomedical Research Institute (IdIBGI), Girona, Catalonia, Spain; Department of Medical Sciences, University of Girona, Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

Caregiving has negative effects on the health of informal caregivers. The current aging of the population predicts an increase in the number of informal caregivers worldwide. The effect of available public policies that support informal caregivers in their self-perceived health is an understudied topic.

The demographic and morbidity characteristics of a population receiving food support in Israel.

Isr J Health Policy Res

August 2018

The Israel Ministry of Health, Nutrition Division, Jerusalem, Israel.

Background: Food supply to poor populations is a big challenge, particularly in periods of economic stress and in an era of chronic diseases epidemics. In Israel more than 4000 poor families are currently receiving food support. Many of the food support products given to the family have low nutrient values, therefore not appropriately ensuring food security of the population.
