Somatosensory neurons can sense external temperature by converting sensation of temperature information to neural activity via afferent input to the central nervous system. Various populations of somatosensory neurons have specialized gene expression, including expression of thermosensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels. Thermosensitive TRP channels are responsible for thermal transduction at the peripheral ends of somatosensory neurons and can sense a wide range of temperatures.

Ryugu is the C-type asteroid from which material was brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 mission. A number of individual grains and fine-grained samples analysed so far for noble gases have indicated that solar wind and planetary (known as P1) noble gases are present in Ryugu samples with concentrations higher than those observed in CIs, suggesting the former to be more primitive compared to the latter. Here we present results of analyses of three fine-grained samples from Ryugu, in one of which Xe concentration is an order of magnitude higher than determined so far in other samples from Ryugu.

Rydberg atoms in optical lattices and tweezers is now a well-established platform for simulating quantum spin systems. However, the role of the atoms' spatial wave function has not been examined in detail experimentally. Here, we show a strong spin-motion coupling emerging from the large variation of the interaction potential over the wave function spread.

Understanding the mechanism by which the brain achieves relatively consistent information processing contrary to its inherent inconsistency in activity is one of the major challenges in neuroscience. Recently, it has been reported that the consistency of neural responses to stimuli that are presented repeatedly is enhanced implicitly in an unsupervised way, and results in improved perceptual consistency. Here, we propose the term "selective consistency" to describe this input-dependent consistency and hypothesize that it will be acquired in a self-organizing manner by plasticity within the neural system.

Gene expression patterns differ in different tissues, and the expression pattern of genes in the mammalian testis is known to be extremely variable in different species. To clarify how the testis transcriptomic pattern has evolved in particular species, we examined the evolution of the adult testis transcriptome in Theria using 10 species: two marsupials (opossum and Tasmanian devil), six eutherian (placental) mammals (human, chimpanzee, bonobo, gorilla, rhesus macaque, and mouse), and two outgroup species (platypus and chicken). We show that 22 testis-expressed genes are marsupial-specific, suggesting their acquisition in the stem lineage of marsupials after the divergence from eutherians.

Performing spectroscopy under practical reaction conditions and extracting spectral components correlating with reaction activity are crucial in elucidating the reactive species in photocatalysis. However, the observation of weak signals corresponding to reactive photogenerated species is frequently hampered under reaction conditions owing to intense background signals originating from thermally induced species unrelated to the photoinduced reactions. Herein, by synchronizing the millisecond periodic excitations of photocatalysts with a Michelson interferometer used for FT-IR spectroscopy, we succeeded in significantly suppressing the signals derived from thermally excited electrons and observing the reactive photogenerated electrons contributing to the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Despite the widespread recognition of the global concern regarding the onset of cardiovascular diseases in a significant number of patients following cancer treatment, definitive strategies for prevention and treatment remain elusive. In this study, we established systems to evaluate the influence of anti-cancer drugs on the quality control of mitochondria, pivotal for energy metabolism, using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). Osimertinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor used for treatment in lung cancer, reportedly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A novel Imaging Neutral Particle Analyzer (INPA) was newly installed in early 2024 to enhance the understanding of fast ion confinement on Large Helical Devices (LHDs). This diagnostic system, based on a magnetic spectrometer using a scintillator, provides energy-resolved radial profiles of confined fast ions by measuring charge-exchanged fast neutrals escaping from the plasma. The system utilizes a 100 nm thick carbon foil to ionize the fast neutrals, subsequently deflecting the ions toward a scintillator via the existing local magnetic field.

Rapid generation of a plausible reaction path connecting a given reactant and product in advance is crucial for the efficient computation of precise reaction paths or transition states. We propose a computationally efficient potential energy based on the molecular structure to generate such paths. This potential energy has a flat bottom consisting of structures without atomic collisions while preserving nonreactive chemical bonds, bond angles, and partial planar structures.

Background And Aims: Fertilization relies on pollen mother cells able to transition from mitosis to meiosis to supply gametes. This process involves remarkable changes at the molecular, cellular and physiological levels, including (but not limited to) remodelling of the cell wall. During the onset of meiosis, the cellulose content in the pollen mother cell walls gradually declines, with the concurrent deposition of the polysaccharide callose in anther locules.

A preparatory study is underway to investigate the feasibility study of high-energetic, non-thermal electron distribution function measurements using a vertical-viewing electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic on JT-60SA. The system is designed to detect broad ECE spectra (70-260 GHz) due to the second, third, and fourth harmonics using a focusing optics system with four quasi-optical mirrors in the upper port of JT-60SA. A Gaussian beam optics design is performed in vacuum, and ray tracing calculations are performed in plasma using the TRAVIS code to investigate density characteristics.

In this issue of Structure, Chi et al. report structural and functional studies that reveal the inhibition mechanism of the lysosomal two-pore channel TPC2 by the antagonist SG-094, which is of interest for drug development. Antagonist binding induces the downward displacement of the voltage-sensor domain II (VSD II), which is accompanied by asymmetric conformational rearrangements of the entire channel.

Biomolecular condensates are broadly implicated in both normal cellular regulation and disease. Consequently, several chemical biology and optogenetic approaches have been developed to induce phase separation of a protein of interest. However, few tools are available to perform the converse function - dissolving a condensate of interest on demand.

Unlabelled: Visual stimulation can generate illusory self-motion perception (vection) and cause motion sickness among susceptible people, but the underlying neural mechanism is not fully understood. In this study, SSVEP responses to visual stimuli presented in different parts of the visual field are examined in individuals with different susceptibilities to motion sickness to identify correlates of motion sickness. Alpha band SSVEP data were collected from fifteen university students when they were watching roll-vection-inducing visual stimulation containing: (1) an achromatic checkerboard flickering at 8.

Molecular cloning techniques enabling contemporaneous expression of two or more protein-coding sequences provide an invaluable tool for understanding the molecular regulation of cellular functions. The Cre-lox system is used for inducing the expression of recombinant proteins encoded within a bi-/poly-cistronic cassette. However, leak expression of transgenes is often observed in the absence of Cre recombinase activity, compromising the utility of this approach.

Introduction: The deep echo state network (Deep-ESN) architecture, which comprises a multi-layered reservoir layer, exhibits superior performance compared to conventional echo state networks (ESNs) owing to the divergent layer-specific time-scale responses in the Deep-ESN. Although researchers have attempted to use experimental trial-and-error grid searches and Bayesian optimization methods to adjust the hyperparameters, suitable guidelines for setting hyperparameters to adjust the time scale of the dynamics in each layer from the perspective of dynamical characteristics have not been established. In this context, we hypothesized that evaluating the dependence of the multi-time-scale dynamical response on the leaking rate as a typical hyperparameter of the time scale in each neuron would help to achieve a guideline for optimizing the hyperparameters of the Deep-ESN.

To ensure timely duplication of the entire eukaryotic genome, thousands of replication machineries (replisomes) act on genomic DNA at any time during S phase. In the final stages of this process, replisomes are unloaded from chromatin. Unloading is driven by polyubiquitylation of MCM7, a subunit of the terminated replicative helicase, and processed by p97/VCP segregase.

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are pluripotent stem cells that can produce all cell types of an organism. ES cells proliferate rapidly and are thought to experience high levels of intrinsic replication stress. Here, by investigating replication fork dynamics in substages of S phase, we show that mammalian pluripotent stem cells maintain a slow fork speed and high active origin density throughout the S phase, with little sign of fork pausing.

For developing and characterizing a novel compact D-T neutron spectrometer based on a single-crystal chemical vapor deposition diamond stack for plasma diagnostics toward future D-T fusion reactors, the initial measurement was performed using the accelerator-based D-T neutron sources OKTAVIAN at Osaka University. This neutron spectrometer was designed for the detection of 3-17 MeV neutrons and operated in the proton recoil telescope configuration by installing a polyethylene converter in front of the diamond stack. The measured neutron energy spectra were obtained by summing the energy of the recoil protons deposited in the diamond stack after the coincidence of the recoil protons identified by the time coincidence analysis.

Cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein (RNP) granules are membraneless structures composed of various RNAs and proteins that play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation. While RNP granules are known to regulate the meiotic entry in some organisms, little is known about their roles in plants. In this study, we observed the cytoplasmic granular structures of rice RNA-binding protein MEIOSIS ARRESTED AT LEPTOTENE2 (MEL2), which contributes to the control of meiotic entry timing, in leaf protoplasts and spore mother cells.
