Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has been in routine clinical use for over 20 years with millions of patients successfully treated and a low rate of clinically significant complications. The procedure requires the clinician to manually position the laser beam on the trabecular meshwork using a gonioscopy lens and to titrate the SLT laser energy based on the amount of pigmentation in the angle, as well as the observation of small bubbles produced by the laser effect. We propose that SLT energy titration is unnecessary either to achieve intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction or to minimize potential side effects.

Maintaining average activity within a set-point range constitutes a fundamental property of central neural circuits. However, whether and how activity set points are regulated remains unknown. Integrating genome-scale metabolic modeling and experimental study of neuronal homeostasis, we identified mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) as a regulator of activity set points in hippocampal networks.

Objectives: Lithium (Li ) is one of the most widely used treatments for bipolar disorder (BD). However, the molecular and neuronal basis of BD, as well as the mechanisms of Li actions are poorly understood. Cellular and biochemical studies identified G proteins as being among the cellular targets for Li action, while genetic studies indicated an association with the KCNJ3 gene, which encodes the G protein-activated inwardly rectifying K (GIRK) channels.

Dysfunction of the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) results in degeneration of photoreceptors and vision loss and is correlated with common blinding disorders in humans. Although many protein-coding genes are known to be expressed in RPE and are important for its development and maintenance, virtually nothing is known about the in vivo roles of non-coding transcripts. The expression patterns of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been analyzed in a variety of ocular tissues, and a few were implicated to play role in RPE based on studies in cell lines.

Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (ARB), when given with angiotensin II prevents AAA formation in mice, but found ineffective in attenuating the progression of preexisting AAA. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of chronic RAS blockers on abdominal aortic diameter in hypertensive patients without known aortic aneurysm.

Purpose: 1) to investigate whether leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) is a factor in the inflammatory reaction following chorioretinal laser injury in rabbits; 2) to study its relationship with the cyclooxygenase (COX) metabolic pathway; 3) to study the influence of Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), an inhibitor; of the lipoxygenase (LOX) cascade, on both COX and LOX metabolism.
Methods: Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and LTB(4) synthesis by incubated samples of chorioretina obtained from rabbits' eyes exposed to Neodymium:Yag laser along with these eicosanoids accumulation in the vitreous were measured over one week follow-up period. The effect of NDGA pre-treatment on the COX and the LOX pathways in the laser-injured chorioretina was also assessed.
