Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is one of the most common malformations in embryonic development. HPE represents a continuum spectrum that involves the midline cleavage of forebrain structures. Facial malformations of varying degrees of severity are also observed.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of available tests for pyuria, including newer automated tests, and to examine the implications of requiring them for the diagnosis of urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Methods: We included children between 1 and 36 months of age undergoing bladder catheterization for suspected UTIs who presented to 1 of 3 pediatric centers. Using a positive urine culture result as the reference standard, we compared the sensitivity of 5 modalities for assessing pyuria at the cutoffs most often used clinically for detecting children with a positive culture result: leukocyte esterase on a dipstick, white blood cell (WBC) count on manual microscopy with and without using a hemocytometer, automated WBC enumeration using flow cytometry, and automated WBC enumeration using digital imaging with particle recognition.
Objective: This study aims to document and analyze the challenges and outcomes of performing complex airway surgery in a low-resource, post-war setting in Mekelle, Ethiopia.
Methods: This prospective case series examines clinical data from five patients who underwent airway reconstruction surgeries and one patient who underwent total laryngectomy at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Mekelle. Data included patient demographics, airway stenosis etiology and severity, operative details, postoperative outcomes, complications, and hospital length of stay.

Background: Osteoporosis, a prevalent bone density disorder, introduces a complex dynamic in the context of total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). However, despite the well-established association between osteoporosis and an elevated risk of revision, the existing literature lacks comprehensive insights into the impact of anti-osteoporotic therapy on surgical outcomes in the setting of TSA. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether anti-osteoporotic therapy correlates with improved revision outcomes following TSA.

Background: Althugh general anesthesia is the predominant choice in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), recent studies have suggested that locoregional anesthesia could be a viable alternative for suitable patients. Frailty has been identified as an independent predictor of increased mortality and morbidity in EVAR. However, the choice of anesthesia in frail patients undergoing EVAR has not been explored.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the leading causes of young-onset dementia before age 65, typically manifesting as abnormal behavior (in behavioral variant FTD) or language impairment (in primary progressive aphasia). Although FTD affects all populations across the globe, knowledge regarding the pathophysiology and genetics derives primarily from studies conducted in North America and Western Europe. Globally, biomedical research for FTD is hindered by variable access to diagnosis, discussed in this group's earlier article, and by reduced access to expertise, funding, and infrastructure.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense pruritus and eczematous lesions. Tozorakimab is a high-affinity human monoclonal antibody that neutralizes interleukin-33, a broad-acting alarmin cytokine that is over-expressed in keratinocytes of patients with AD.
Objectives: This Phase 2a study (FRONTIER-2; NCT04212169) evaluated the safety and efficacy of tozorakimab in adults with moderate-to-severe AD.

Loss to follow-up and decreased access to timely care have health consequences that often lead to increased emergency service utilization for benign, treatable, and preventable conditions. As such, significant medical intervention is necessary. Specifically in the District of Columbia (DC), the health of Medicaid beneficiaries of Wards 7 and 8, overwhelmingly underserved communities, necessitates alternative means for more accessible, convenient, and consistent care, which can be achieved by integrating telemedicine services into current care modalities.

Purpose: Functional connectivity hubs were previously identified at the source level in low-risk full-term newborns by high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG). However, the directionality of information flow among hubs remains unclear. The aim of this study was to study the directionality of information flow among source level hubs in low-risk full-term newborns using HD-EEG.

Background: Despite the growing literature on racial disparities in the utilization of total laryngectomy (TL), and survival following the treatment of laryngeal cancers, there is a paucity of research in TL cohorts evaluating disparities in the immediate postoperative setting.
Methods: In a national multi-institutional cohort, TL cases between 2010 and 2021 were identified using relevant Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. Logistic regression analyses investigated the association between race/ethnicity and adverse outcomes within 30 days postoperatively.

Objectives: Giant coronary artery aneurysms are rare but potentially fatal complications of Kawasaki disease. The lack of evidence-based recommendations on their management and treatment cause guidelines and practices to differ. We aimed to assess these variations.

Introduction: Sarcopenia, or the loss of lean muscle mass, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality as well as poor surgical outcomes. The aim of our study was to utilize computed tomography imaging to obtain the total psoas volume (TPV) as a potential marker of sarcopenia. We then investigated the relationship between TPV and outcomes in surgically managed hip fracture patients, particularly their discharge disposition.

Background: Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) has revolutionized the surgical treatment for Stanford type B aortic dissection (TBAD). While chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with worse outcomes in major surgeries, the specific outcomes of TEVAR in patients with COPD have not been extensively explored. This study aimed to evaluate the 30-day postoperative outcomes of COPD patients undergoing TEVAR for TBAD utilizing data from a multi-institutional national registry.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoid neoplasms in childhood are exceedingly rare, presenting with a wide spectrum of clinical presentation and outcomes. Due to numerous clinical and pathological mimics, an integrated evaluation of clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings is critical for a diagnosis. Here, we review the clinical and pathological features, updated classifications, and critical differential diagnoses of cutaneous T-cell lymphoid neoplasms in children.

We develop a frequency domain template subtraction approach to attenuate the maternal ECG in the abdominal ECG measured from pregnant women. The proposed approach was tested on five public fetal ECG datasets simultaneously measured with ECG from the fetal scalp. The method's performance was compared with the template subtraction approach in the time domain using the accuracy and association metrics.

Neonatal hypoxia (Hx) causes white matter (WM) injury, particularly in the cerebellum. We previously demonstrated that Hx-induced reduction of cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) activity results in locomotor deficits. Yet, the mechanism of Hx-induced cerebellar WM injury and associated locomotor abnormalities remains undetermined.
