Background: Highly sensitive and rapid detection of cell concentration and interfacial molecular events is of great value for biological, biomedical, and chemical research. Most traditional biosensors require large sample volumes and complicated functional modifications of the surface. It is of great significance to develop label-free biosensor platforms with minimal sample consumption for studying cell concentration changes and interfacial molecular events without labor-intensive procedures.

This study aimed to evaluate acute pancreatitis (AP) severity using convolutional neural network (CNN) models with enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans. Three-dimensional DenseNet CNN models were developed and trained using the enhanced CT scans labeled with two severity assessment methods: the computed tomography severity index (CTSI) and Atlanta classification. Each labeling method was used independently for model training and validation.

Background And Aims: Accurately predicting length of stay (LOS) is considered a challenging task for health care systems globally. In previous studies on LOS range prediction, researchers commonly pre-classified the LOS ranges, which were the same for all patients in the same classification, and then utilized a classifier for prediction. In this study, we innovatively aimed to predict the specific LOS range for each patient (the LOS range was different for each patient).

Background And Aims: Improved mortality prediction among intensive care unit (ICU) inpatients is a valuable and challenging task. Limited clinical data, especially with appropriate labels, are an important element restricting accurate predictions. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are excellent generative models and have shown great potential for data simulation.

Background: The adverse effects of cardiopulmonary bypass during open cardiac surgery, including hemodilution, seem to be inevitable, especially for patients who generally have a relatively lower BMI with relatively small blood volumes. This study reports the modification and use of a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) system to reduce priming volume and hemodilution.
Methods: This is a retrospective study of 462 adult patients who underwent cardiac valve replacement surgery from January 2019 to September 2021 at the General Hospital of Western Theater Command.

High-altitude polycythemia (HAPC) can occur in individuals who are intolerant to high-altitude hypoxia. In patients with HAPC, erythrocytosis is often accompanied by a decrease in platelet count. Chronic hypoxia can increase the incidence of arteriovenous thrombosis and the risk of bleeding during antithrombotic treatment due to thrombocytopenia; therefore, understanding the cause of thrombocytopenia can reduce the risk of treatment-related bleeding.

Objective: Tranexamic acid (TXA) plays a significant role in the treatment of traumatic diseases. However, its effectiveness in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) seems to be contradictory, according to the recent publication of several meta-analyses. We aimed to determine the efficacy of TXA treatment at different times and doses for TBI treatment.

This study aimed to investigate whether mobile health (mHealth)-based transitional care, which utilized WeChat, could benefit patients undergoing hepatectomy. From January 2019 to December 2020, 807 patients who underwent hepatectomy in a tertiary care hospital were included in the study. Patients were divided into a transitional care group (TC group) ( = 238) and a control group ( = 569) based on whether they participated in mHealth-based transitional care, which utilized the WeChat application.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a nomogram for predicting the risk of pressure injury (PI) in adult patients undergoing abdominal surgery and validate its effectiveness among these patients.
Methods: This study retrospectively included 11,247 adult patients, who underwent abdominal surgery and postoperative supervision in ICU, in a tertiary care hospital in western China between January 2017 and December 2020. All datasets were extracted from the patient's medical records and randomly divided into the training cohort (8,997) and the validation cohort (2,250) by 8:2.

Accumulating studies have demonstrated critical roles of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the biological processes leading to occurrence, development and chemoresistance of cancers. However, the specific identities and functional roles of lncRNAs associated with m6A modification in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain elusive. In this study, eighty-two prognostic m6A-related lncRNAs (m6A-LncRNAs) were identified in HCC datasets.

Ferroptosis is a newly identified form of regulated cell death characterized by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis plays an essential role in the pathology of numerous diseases and has emerged as a key area of focus in studies of chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is a major public health problem with high incidence and mortality that is characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time.

Background: Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is an important risk factor for organ dysfunction, and it occurs in the early phase of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). We have reported a novel step-up approach and shown the benefit of performing abdominal paracentesis drainage (APD) ahead of percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) when treating Patients with SAP with fluid collections. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of APD in Patients with SAP complicated with IAH in the early phase.

Background: Hemobilia occurs when there is a fistula between hepatic blood vessels and biliary radicles, and represents only a minority of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhages. Causes of hemobilia are varied, but liver abscess rarely causes hemobilia and only a few cases have been reported. Here, we present a case of atypical hemobilia caused by liver abscess that was successfully managed by endoscopic hepatobiliary intervention through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Background: Our previous studies confirmed that abdominal paracentesis drainage (APD) attenuates intestinal mucosal injury in rats with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), and improves administration of enteral nutrition in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the underlying mechanisms of the beneficial effects of APD remain poorly understood.
Aim: To evaluate the effect of APD on intestinal inflammation and accompanying apoptosis induced by SAP in rats, and its potential mechanisms.

Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has drawn great interest for the functional and conformational investigations of nucleic acids, but its intrinsic sensitivity hinders potential bio-sensing applications. Here, a novel THz biosensor was developed for detecting microRNA (miRNA) samples based on metamaterials coupled with nanoparticles and strand displacement amplification (SDA). In this method, the SDA reaction amplifies the target miRNA and generates copious yields of secondary DNA molecules (Trigger DNA), which are subsequently conjugated to metallic nanoparticles that form nanoparticle-Trigger DNA complexes.

Diabetes mellitus causes endothelial dysfunction, which further exacerbates peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Improving endothelial function via reducing endothelial oxidative stress (OS) may be a promising therapy for diabetic PAD. Activation of liver X receptor (LXR) inhibits excessive OS and provides protective effects on endothelial cells in diabetic individuals.

Our previous studies have shown that abdominal paracentesis drainage (APD) is a safe and effective strategy for patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). However, the underlying mechanisms behind APD treatment remain poorly understood. Given that apoptosis is a critical pathological response of SAP, we here aim to investigate the effect of APD on cell apoptosis in pancreatic tissues during SAP and to explore its potential molecular mechanism.
