Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine cancer, of which papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type. Neuregulin 1 (NRG1), a glycoprotein mediating cell‑cell signaling, plays vital roles in cellular activities; however, its role in PTC progression remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed immunohistochemistry in 196 samples from patients and found that NRG1, a potential prognostic marker is highly expressed in PTC compared with adjacent normal tissues.

KMT5A (known as PR-Set7/9, SETD8 and SET8), a member of the SET domain containing methyltransferase family specifically targeting H4K20 for methylation, has been implicated in multiple biological processes. In the present study, we identified that KMT5A was elevated in 50 pairs of papillary thyroid cancer tissue samples and in cell lines K1 and TPC-1 by qRT-PCR and western blotting, as well as by immunohistochemical staining. CCK-8 assay and flow cytometric analysis revealed that inhibition of KMT5A attenuated proliferation and induced apoptosis.

Epigenetic abnormalities as well as genetic abnormalities may play a vital role in the tumorigenesis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). The present study aimed to analyze the function and methylation status of the HOXD10 gene in PTC and aimed to identify relationships between HOXD10 methylation, HOXD10 expression, BRAF mutation and clinicopathological characteristics of PTC. A total of 152 PTC patients were enrolled in the present study.

Paeonol (Pae; 2'-hydroxy-4'-methoxyacetophenone) has attracted intense attention as a potential therapeutic agent against various cancers. However, the use of Pae is limited owing to its hydrophobicity. Recently, biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles with amphiphilic copolymers have been used as drug carriers; these have better bioavailability and are promising tumor-targeted drug delivery systems.

In our preliminary study, Berbamine (BA), one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese medicines, was effective in inducing the intracellular ROS levels. Since the regulation of cellular antioxidant capacity is crucial to the sensitivity of Ptx, it is feasible to propose that sensitizing cells to Ptx can be achieved through increasing the antioxidant capacity by codelivering BA. Cytotoxicity test demonstrates that either single or combinational treatment of BA and Ptx dose-dependently inhibits the proliferation of U-87 cells.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of cancer‑related mortality worldwide. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that microRNAs may be used as diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic targets for human cancers, including HCC. The present study aimed to evaluate microRNA (miR)‑302a expression and function in HCC, and its underlying mechanisms.

A 48-year-old Chinese woman presenting with continuing dull pain in the right lower back and abdomen was found to have a tumor with extensive osseous metaplasia in the upper-middle pole of the right kidney. The excised neoplasm specimen revealed a 29 × 26 mm hard tumor with dense ossification. Histopathological examination of the tumor showed that it contained lamellar bone forming trabeculae intermingled and spherical or polygonal epithelial cells that contained slightly irregular nuclei with small nucleoli and abundant pink to clear cytoplasm.

The anti-glioma effect of temozolomide (Tem) is sometimes undermined by the emerging resistance. Recently, resveratrol (Res), herbal medicine extracted from grape seeds, has been demonstrated for its potential use in chemosensitization. In the current study, both these drugs were loaded simultaneously into nanoparticles with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly epsilon caprolactone (mPEG-PCL) as drug carriers in order to achieve better antitumor efficiency.

Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is the one of the most commonly observed types of cancer globally. The identification of novel disease-associated genes in TCC has had a significant effect on the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer; however, there may be a large number of novel genes that have not been identified. In the present study, the exomes of two individuals who were diagnosed with muscle-invasive TCC (MI-TCC) were sequenced to investigate potential variants.
