Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the effectiveness and time efficiency of two advanced imaging methods, arterial spin labeling (ASL) and computed tomography perfusion (CTP), in treating patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT).
  • A total of 326 patients were analyzed, with 202 matched into ASL and CTP groups; results showed no significant differences in functional independence or overall time to treatment between the groups.
  • However, the CTP group experienced fewer complications and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhages compared to the ASL group, while ischemic core volume was identified as a key predictor for favorable outcomes in both imaging methods.

This study aimed to explore the role and mechanism of felodipine in lung cancer therapy. Murine subcutaneous lung squamous cancer (LUSC) models constructed by KLN-205 cells were utilized to assess the effect of felodipine monotherapy and in combination with the programmed cell death protein 1 antibody (PD1ab) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA4ab). Immunohistochemistry analysis was subsequently applied to detect the number of CD8+ T cells and Ki67+ cells.

Key role of exosomes derived from M2 macrophages in maintaining cancer cell stemness (Review).

Int J Oncol

November 2023

Department of Stomatology, Yantian District People's Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518081, P.R. China.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) constitute a specific subset of cells found within tumors that are responsible for initiating, advancing and resisting traditional cancer treatments. M2 macrophages, also known as alternatively activated macrophages, contribute to the development and progression of cancer through their involvement in promoting angiogenesis, suppressing the immune system, supporting tumor growth and facilitating metastasis. Exosomes, tiny vesicles released by cells, play a crucial role in intercellular communications and have been shown to be associated with cancer development and progression by influencing the immune response; thus, they may serve as markers for diagnosis and prognosis.

Novel risk score model for non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy based on untargeted metabolomics of venous blood.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

September 2023

Department of Geriatrics, Shenzhen People's Hospital (The Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University, The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.

Background And Purpose: Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) occurs in the early stages of Diabetic retinopathy (DR), and the study of its metabolic markers will help to prevent DR. Hence, we aimed to establish a risk score based on multiple metabolites through untargeted metabolomic analysis of venous blood from NPDR patients and diabetic non-DR patients.

Experimental Approach: Untargeted metabolomics of venous blood samples from patients with NPDR, diabetes melitus without DR were performed using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Sclerosing stromal tumors of the ovary are benign and tend to occur in youthful women with lobular structures at low frequencies. Three types of cells, including luteinized cells, short spindle myoid cells, and intermediate cells, are found in the lobules which abundant in the blood vessels. Currently, immunohistochemistry is used to detect normal follicles, sclerosing stromal tumors, granulosa cell tumors, and fibromas/thecomas.

Background: Thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) deficiency is a rare thyroid disease, mostly caused by genetic mutations and acquired by X-linked recessive inheritance. The clinical features of children with TBG deficiency and their family members were summarised and the Serpina7 gene mutation was analysed, providing a reference for the differentiation of TBG deficiency.

Methods: Thyroid function was detected in TBG deficient patients, and genetic analysis was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct DNA sequencing to detect the characteristics of TBG mutants.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease of the colon that result in the destruction and inflammation of the colonic mucosa. Current research has established a strong correlation between pyroptosis of colonic epithelial cells and the onset and progression of UC. In addition, miRNAs have been implicated in the development and progression of UC and pyroptosis.

Background: Accurately predicting the occurrence of imminent new vertebral fractures (NVFs) in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) undergoing vertebral augmentation (VA) is challenging with yet no effective approach. This study aim to examine a machine learning model based on radiomics signature and clinical factors in predicting imminent new vertebral fractures after vertebral augmentation.

Methods: A total of 235 eligible patients with OVCFs who underwent VA procedures were recruited from two independent institutions and categorized into three groups, including training set (n = 138), internal validation set (n = 59), and external validation set (n = 38).

Clinical Distribution and Drug Resistance of in Guangzhou, China from 2017 to 2021.

J Clin Med

February 2023

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Diagnostics, The First Dongguan Affiliated Hospital, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan 523808, China.

The aim of the current study was to analyse the distribution of antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) among (, PA) isolates from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (GDPH) from 2017 to 2021, and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on changes in the clinical distribution and drug resistance rate of to establish guidelines for empiric therapy. Electronic clinical data registry records from 2017 to 2021 were retrospectively analysed to study the AMR among strains from GDPH. The strains were identified by VITEK 2 Compact and MALDI-TOF MS, MIC method or Kirby-Bauer method for antibiotic susceptibility testing.

Integrating dissolving microneedles (DMNs) and nanocarriers (NC) holds great potential in transdermal drug delivery because it can simultaneously overcome the stratum corneum barrier and achieve efficient and controlled drug delivery. However, different skin sites with different thicknesses and compositions can affect the transdermal diffusion of NC-loaded DMNs. There are few reports on the biological fate (especially transdermal diffusion) of NC-loaded DMNs, and inaccurate bioimaging information of intact NC limits the accurate understanding of the in vivo fate of NC-loaded DMNs.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to explore the alterations in gut microbiota composition and cytokine responses related to disease progression, severity, and outcomes in patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).

Methods: Fecal microbiota communities of 64 patients with ICH, 46 coronary heart disease controls, and 23 healthy controls were measured by sequencing the V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene. Serum concentrations of a broad spectrum of cytokines were examined by liquid chips and ELISA.

We have already demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells from patients with ankylosing spondylitis (ASMSCs) exhibited greater adipogenic differentiation potential than those from healthy donors (HDMSCs). Here, we further investigated the expression profile of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and mRNA, aiming to explore the underlying mechanism of abnormal adipogenic differentiation in ASMSCs. HDMSCs and ASMSCs were separately isolated and induced with adipogenic differentiation medium for 10 days.
