Introduction: (-)-Gossypol (AT-101), the (-)-enantiomer of the natural compound gossypol, has shown significant inhibitory effects on various types of cancers such as osteosarcoma, myeloma, glioma, lung cancer, and prostate cancer. However, the clinical application of (-)-gossypol was often hindered by its evident side effects and the low bioavailability via oral administration, which necessitated the development of suitable (-)-gossypol preparations to settle the problems. In this study, injectable cyclic RGD (cRGD)-decorated liposome (cRGD-LP) was prepared for tumor-targeted delivery of (-)-gossypol.

Purpose: With the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer (TC), associations between genetic polymorphisms and TC risk have attracted a lot of attention. Considering that the results of associations of genetic variants with TC were usually inconsistent based on publications until now, we attempted to comprehensively evaluate the real evidence of associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and TC risk.

Method: We performed meta-analyses on 36 SNPs in 23 genes associated with TC susceptibility based on the data from 99 articles and comprehensively valued the epidemiological evidence of significant associations through the Venice criteria and false-positive report probability (FPRP) test.

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) has been increasingly performed as a safe treatment option for periampullary malignant and benign disorders. However, the operation may result in significant postoperative complications. Here, we present a case that recurrent pyogenic liver abscess after PD is caused by common hepatic artery injury in atypical celiac axis anatomy.

Insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) is reported to play a critical role in the development, progression, invasion and metastasis of several types of tumors and is abnormally expressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Although IRS-1 is predicted to be targeted by microRNA (miR)-144, the biological roles and potential mechanisms of miR-144 in NPC remain unclear. In the present study, the expression levels of miR-144 and IRS-1 in several NPC cell lines were first examined, and found that they were negatively correlated.

Background: The study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing small intestinal submucosa (SIS) scaffolds seeded with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) for engineered tendon repairing rat Achilles tendon defects and to compare the effects of preconditioning treatments (hypoxic vs. normoxic) on the tendon healing.

Methods: Fifty SD rats were randomized into five groups.

Hepatitis B viral (HBV) load and hepatic enzymes play a critical role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. However, the clinical significance of these in HBV-related HCC patients after hepatectomy remains unclear. In this study, we analysed 1,940 HBV-related HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy from four hospitals in west China.

Proliferation and metastasis are important malignant features of pancreatic cancer (PC), but the underlying molecular mechanism is unclear. ZC3HAV1, a PARP family member of proteins-enzymes, has been considered to play a significant part in a variety of biological processes. Nonetheless, the functions of ZC3HAV1 in developing PC are still unknown.

Key Laboratory of Bioresources and Eco-Environment (Ministry of Education), College of Life Sciences, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, Sichuan, China; Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology on Endangered Wildlife, College of Life Sciences, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610064, Sichuan, China. Electronic address:

Diarrhoea is a widespread disease in captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and a small proportion of individuals may experience persistent diarrhoea. Persistent diarrhoea can lead to a compromised immune system, intestinal inflammation and malnutrition. We analyzed the blood transcriptomes of 10 persistent diarrhoeal and 12 healthy rhesus macaques to investigate the gene expression differences between the two groups.

Background: Lethal giant larvae (Lgl), scaffolding proteins, regulate the epithelial cell apicobasal polarity in Drosophila. They play important roles in asymmetric cell division, cell migration, and progenitor cells self-renewal as tumor suppressors. One of Lgl mammalian homologues proteins, LLGL2 overexpression has been reported in ER+ breast cancer and promotes tumor proliferation through regulating leucine uptake.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a clinical syndrome caused by genetic and environmental factors. Growing evidence suggests that exposure to environmental endocrine disruptors and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome signaling play a vital role in diabetes. However, it is unclear how PCB118, a common environmental endocrine disruptor, contributes to the incidence of diabetes, and its specific mechanism of action is unknown.

This study aimed to develop an effective therapy against M2 macrophages and to investigate the effects of imidazole and mannose modified carboxymethyl chitosan-nanoparticles (MIC-NPs) on tumor growth and antitumor immune responses. MIC-NPs were constructed and analyzed through H NMR, nano-laser particle size analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy. The nanoparticles were mainly distributed in 75-85 nm, and zeta potential was 1.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated serum vitamin D levels among adult women in the sunlight-deprived Sichuan basin of China, comparing them to women in a sunlight-abundant plateau.
  • Results showed significantly higher rates of severe vitamin D deficiency in the basin (21.85%) versus the plateau (10.09%), with lower average serum 25(OH)D levels in the basin.
  • Interestingly, older women in the basin had higher vitamin D levels than younger ones, and sunlight exposure didn't significantly correlate with their vitamin D status, unlike in the plateau where younger women benefitted more from sunlight.
