Background: Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, and some sepsis patients will develop cardiac dysfunction. Sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction (SICD) has been demonstrated to be a promising predictor of mortality, although the prediction of SICD itself remains unclear. Clinical studies have shown that soluble CD14 subtype (sCD14-ST) may be a useful predictor for sepsis.

Objective: To analyze variants of PRRT2 gene in two children with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia.

Methods: Genomic DNA of the two children and their parents was extracted from peripheral venous blood samples. All exons and their flanking regions of the PRRT2 gene were subjected to PCR and Sanger sequencing.

Small side branch compromise related to main vessel stenting: A retrospective cohort study comparing different treatment strategies.

Medicine (Baltimore)

August 2018

Cardiology Department of the Second Xiangya Hospital Cardiology Department of the First Renmin Hospital of Changsha, Changsha, Hunan Center for Evidence-based and Translational Medicine, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the clinical outcomes of treating small side branches during main vessel stenting in coronary artery disease patients, focusing on whether treating compromised side branches (SBT) is beneficial compared to not treating them (NSBT).
  • A total of 119 patients with small side branches were analyzed, revealing that SBT procedures took significantly longer and had more complications than NSBT, but both groups had similar rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and improvements in heart function classifications.
  • The findings suggest that not treating compromised small side branches does not increase the risk of MACE or negatively affect heart function, indicating that less aggressive management may be sufficient in these cases.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with pre-diabetes by surveying 1,500 men from Lanzhou, including those with impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and normal blood glucose (NBG).
  • Results showed that the rates of ED were significantly higher in the pre-diabetic groups (IFG 14.8%, IGT 29.2%, NBG 33.2%), particularly when compared to the NBG group, which had the lowest prevalence.
  • The findings suggest that men with pre-diabetes experience a higher prevalence of ED compared to those with normal blood glucose levels.

Clonidine, a classical α-2 adrenergic agonists, has been shown to antagonize brain damage caused by hypoxia, cerebral ischemia and excitotoxicity and reduce cerebral infarction volume in recent studies. We herein investigate the regulatory effect and possible underlying mechanism of clonidine on learning and memory in rats with cerebral ischemia. The cerebral ischemia rat model was established by right middle cerebral artery occlusion for 2h and reperfusion for 28 days.

ADIPOQ gene polymorphisms were indicated to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic patients, however, published studies reported inconsistent results. We performed this meta-analysis to reach a more accurate estimation of the relationship between two common ADIPOQ genetic polymorphisms (rs2241766 and rs1501299) and CAD risk in diabetic patients. Eligible studies were retrieved by searching PubMed, Embase, Wangfang, VIP database and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases.

A brain ischemia rat model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 2h and reperfusion for 4h to investigate the underlying mechanism of the neuroprotection action of clonidine, a classical alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, on cerebral ischemia. Clonidine and yohimbine were intraperitoneally given to the rats each day for a week before ischemia. Neurological deficits evaluations were carried out at 6h after operation.

[Dutasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia: an update].

Zhonghua Nan Ke Xue

January 2011

Department of Urology, The First Renmin Hospital of Lanzhou, Lanzhou, Gansu 730050, China.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease in older men. At present, 5alpha reductase inhibitor-based medication, preferred by most BPH patients as the first-choice therapy, is taking place of traditional transurethral resection of the prostate. This article presents an update of the researches on the treatment of BPH with dutasteride--a novel 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor.
