Zooplankton were studied in the largest scale investigation in the South Yellow Sea in spring 2007 by using large plankton net when the green tide hasn't yet occurred. Ninety-six zooplankton species were identified. Copepods, pelagic larvae and hydromedusae were comprised of the largest number of species; Calanus sinicus, Paracalanus parvus, Aidanosagitta crassa, Euphausiidae larvae, Oithona plumifera and Corycaeus affinis were dominant species and their abundance comprised 81.

The green tides in the Yellow Sea, China, which have been occurring since 2007, are a serious environmental problem attracting worldwide attention. Despite extensive research, the outbreak mechanisms have not been fully understood. Comprehensive analysis of anthropogenic and natural biotic and abiotic factors reveals that human activities, regional physicochemical conditions and algal physiological characteristics as well as ocean warming and biological interactions (with microorganism or other macroalgae) are closely related to the occurrence of green tides.

In the previous decade, neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronil (FIP) have received increasing attention as environmental pollutants because the high toxicity of these insecticides to nontarget arthropods has been recognized. In this study, a new method was developed for the simultaneous determination of seven NEOs and FIP and its metabolites (FIPs) in seawater and river water samples using disk-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The optimization of disk-based SPE extraction and HPLC separation parameters of target analytes was investigated.

In several watersheds, agricultural activities are the cause of pollution, mainly due to the discharge of herbicides. Often, these herbicide plumes are transported to the surrounding bays. Samples of water, suspended particulate sediments (SPSs), and sediments from 37 sites in the Jiaozhou Bay in the western Pacific Ocean were collected in April 2018.

Plant U-box (PUB) E3 ubiquitin ligases play crucial roles in the plant response to abiotic stress and the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) signaling, but little is known about them in bryophytes. Here, a representative U-box armadillo repeat (PUB-ARM) ubiquitin E3 ligase from Antarctic moss Pohlia nutans (PnSAG1), was explored for its role in abiotic stress response in Arabidopsis thaliana and Physcomitrella patens. The expression of PnSAG1 was rapidly induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA), salt, cold and drought stresses.

Microplastics have been found to adhere to the surface of specific tissues or organs other than being ingested by the organisms. To further test the hypothesis that microplastics might get into specific body parts of organisms, mussel byssus was chosen as a target subject in the present study. In the field investigation, microplastics were found in mussel byssus, and the abundance of microplastics was 0.

High-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) can detect and continuously track ship objects in real time and beyond the horizon. When ships navigate in a sea area, their motions in a time period form a scenario. The diversity and complexity of the motion scenarios make it difficult to accurately track ships, in which failures such as track fragmentation (TF) are frequently observed.

Considering the serious land-based pollution and the weak water exchange ability of western Laizhou Bay, it is essential to conduct an ecological risk assessment of the pollutants in this area. In this study, the ecological risk caused by heavy metals deposited in the surface sediments and those resuspended in the seawater of western Laizhou Bay was evaluated using probabilistic approaches. First, the concentrations of seven heavy metals, namely As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn, in the surface sediments and seawater of western Laizhou Bay were detected during the spring and autumn of 2016.

Abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonates (JAs) are the primary plant hormones involved in mediating salt tolerance. In addition, these two plant hormones exert a synergistic effect to inhibit seed germination. However, the molecular mechanism of the interaction between ABA signalling and JA signalling is still not well documented.

3-Deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate-7-phosphate synthase (DAHPS) is a key rate-limiting enzyme in aromatic amino acid anabolism. A new I-type DAHPS gene (aro1A) was identified in a metagenomic library from subtropical marine mangrove sediment. The gene encoded a polypeptide composed of 272 amino acids and had a maximum similarity of 52.

Nanocrystals (NCs) of type CuZnSn(SSe) (CZTSSe) were prepared via a solvothermal approach. They are shown to be highly efficient peroxidase (POx) mimics for colorimetric detection of HO. By varying the molar ratio of S and Se during preparation, the NCs showed different crystal structures, morphologies, surface properties, and POx-like activities.

Underwater operational turbine noise emitted by China's first offshore wind farm in the East China Sea Bridge of Shanghai was measured and analyzed in this study. Two sensors were used in the measurement: a hydrophone recording the underwater sound and an accelerometer placed in the turbine tower detecting the tower vibrations. Measurements were performed at two different types of wind turbines: a Sinovel 3 MW SL3000 turbine and a Shanghai Electric 3.

The open reading frame of an α-amylase coding gene, amy19, was obtained from a fosmid genomic library of hot spring bacterium Bacillus BI-19 by a plate-based assay of carrageenase activity. After heterologous expression of the gene, the recombinant Amy19 was found to possess α-amylase, agarase, carrageenase, and cellulase activities, and could degrade soluble starch, agarose, carrageen, and sodium cellulose into oligosaccharides with low degrees of polymerization. To explore the multifunctional mechanism of Amy19, three continuous glycosyl hydrolase 70 (GH70) motifs in the Amy19 encoding sequence were deleted one by one, then in pairs, then all at once.

Studies about the composition and diversity of microbial community in the Rare Earth Elements-rich muds are limited. In this research, we conducted a characterization for the composition and diversity of bacterial and archaeal communities from rare earth elements-rich gravity core sediment at approximately 4800 meters deep in the Indian Ocean by Illumina high-throughput sequencing targeting 16S rRNA genes. The results showed that the most abundant bacteria were Proteobacteria, followed by Firmicutes and Actinobacteria.
