[IL-8 and TNF-alpha in prostatic secretions as indications in evaluating chronic prostatitis].

Objective: To investigate the significance of the determination of IL-8 and TNF-alpha in prostatic secretions in the evaluation of chronic prostatitis.

Methods: IL-8 and TNF-alpha levels in EPS were evaluated by ELISA in 90 men: controls (n = 12), CBP (n = 12), CPPS IIIA (n=38), CPPS IIIB (n=28). And the difference was analyzed between CBP or CPPS IIIA and CPPS IIIB or controls.

[Study on relationship between serum cholylglycine and placental apoptosis in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy].

Objective: To explore the possible mechanism of placental dysfunction in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).

Methods: Serum level of cholylglycine (CG) in 30 cases with ICP (ICP group) and 27 normal pregnant women (control group) was examined by radio-immunoassay before delivery. bax and bcl-2 level in placenta was detected by immunohistochemistry method.

Clinical characteristics of 5 Chinese LQTS families and phenotype-genotype correlation.

In order to assess the clinical manifestations and electrocardiogram (ECG) characteristics of Chinese long QT syndrome (LQTS) patients and describe the phenotype-genotype correlation, the subjects from 5 congenital LQTS families underwent clinical detailed examination including resting body surface ECG. QT interval and transmural dispersion of repolarization (TDR) were manually measured. Five families were genotyped by linkage analysis (polymerase chain reacting-short tandem repeat, PCR-STR).

[Long QT syndrome gene diagnosis by haplotype analysis].

Objective: Three long QT syndrome(LQTS) pedigrees were brought together for genetic diagnosis by using short tandem repeat(STR) markers.

Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples. STR markers (D7S1824, D7S2439, D7S483, D3S1298, D3S1767, D3S3521) in or spanning the HERG and SCN5A gene were amplified; the haplotype analysis for LQTS was performed.

[Clinical study of 22 cases of primary gastrointestinal lymphoma].

Background & Objective: Primary gastrointestinal lymphoma (PGIL) is extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) that originates from extra-nodal tissue of gastrointestinal (GI) tract and has specific clinical and pathological features. This study was to report the clinical and pathological features as well as the treatment outcome of this disease.

Methods: The clinical data of 22 cases of PGIL admitted and treated from January 1994 to June 2000 in the First Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were analyzed retrospectively.

[Expression of thymidine phosphorylase in human colorectal carcinoma and its clinical significance].

Background & Objective: Angiogenesis has been well known to be a factor related to the tumor growth and metastasis. Recent studies have reported that thymidine phosphorylase (TP) is identical with platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor. It not only plays a role in the induction of the tumor angiogenesis, but also enhances the chemotherapeutical sensitivity of the tumor cells to prodrug of 5-fluorouracil.

Effects of bile acids on proliferation and ultrastructural alteration of pancreatic cancer cell lines.

Aim: Pancreatic cancer in the head is frequently accompanied by jaundice and high bile acid level in serum. This study focused on the direct effects of bile acids on proliferation and ultrastructural alteration of pancreatic cancer.

Methods: Pancreatic cancer cell lines PANC-1, MIA PaCa-2 and PGHAM-1 were explored in this study.

Objective: Thioredoxin (TRX) is a redox regulatory protein that protects cells from various stresses. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor was reported to enhance endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities. This study was carried out to investigate whether temocapril, a novel non-sulfhydryl containing ACE inhibitor, reduces the severity of myocarditis via redox regulation mechanisms involving TRX.

[Long term observation in effects of potassium and calcium supplementation on arterial blood pressure and sodium metabolism in adolescents with higher blood pressure].

Objective: To investigate the effects of potassium and calcium supplementation in table salt on reduction of arterial blood pressure and sodium metabolism in adolescents with higher blood pressure.

Methods: A single blind placebo-controlled trial was carried out for two years in 220 adolescents with higher blood pressure, aged 18 - 22 years, who were randomly divided into supplementary group (n = 110) and control group (n = 110). Each of the subjects in the supplementary group and their family members was given 10 mmol of potassium and 10 mmol of calcium mixed in their table salt daily for 24 months.

Mechanism of peripheral blood mononuclear cell invasion by HBV on artificial immunization in newborns.

Objective: To study the effect and mechanism of the peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) invasion by HBV on artificial immunization in newborns.

Methods: Fifty-two newborns of HBsAg positive mothers were immunized with HBIG (hepatitis B immunoglobulin) and HBVac (hepatitis B vaccine) and were followed up for 7 months. The newborns' HBV-DNA in serum and in the PBMCs was detected with nested-PCR; anti-HBs was tested with solid phase radioimmunoassay (SP-RIA).

Multivariate statistical analysis of clinicopathologic factors influencing survival of patients with bile duct carcinoma.

Aim: To evaluate the influence of various clinicopathologic factors on survival of patients with bile duct carcinoma after curative resection.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was made for 86 cases of bile duct carcinoma treated from January 1981 to September 1995. Fifteen clinicopathologic factors possibly influencing survival were selected.
