Background: Paradoxical psoriasis induced by tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonists is a rare side effect of those drugs and has similarities with and differences from classical psoriasis in clinical and pathological characteristics. Treating severe paradoxical psoriasis is challenging because the reported cases are rare, with treatment experience being only anecdotal.

Case Summary: We report 2 cases of paradoxical psoriasis caused by infliximab.

Based on an adaptive algorithm model, this study proposed 2 special model structures of randomized fusion and an optimized convolution kernel and use it for image recognition. The adaptive algorithm model combined image-guided electroacupuncture with a continuous femoral nerve block to prevent deep vein thrombosis after total knee arthroplasty. A total of 200 patients after total knee arthroplasty were randomly divided into 4 groups.

MiRNAs are integral for maintaining immune homeostasis and self-tolerance. In this study, qPCR analyses were performed to determine which miRNAs play an important role in wound healing. Next, an experiment in a model of wound healing was performed, and histology, mRNA expression and T-cell subpopulations in wound tissue were analyzed.

Background: Current therapeutic options have limited efficacy for patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancer. Immune checkpoint inhibition now has been increasingly used in advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancer therapy. To further understand the efficacy and safety of anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and its ligand 1 (PD-L1) agents is critical for clinical practice.

Background: It is unclear whether cetuximab (CTX) plus cisplatin-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) delivers equivalent or improved results over standard CCRT in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

Methods: The strategy involved searching the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS), and disease-free survival (DFS), and pooled risk ratios for adverse events were meta-analyzed.

Background: Inhibitors of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) have been increasingly used in head and neck cancer therapy and reported to improve the outcomes with an acceptable safety profile. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the benefit and risk of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in patients with head and neck cancer.

Method: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were systematically searched to find potentially eligible studies up to May 30, 2019.

Background: Photodynamic therapy is an effective treatment for actinic keratosis. 5-aminolevulinic acid nanoemulsion (BF-200 ALA) and methyl-5-aminolevulinate (MAL) are both prodrugs for the treatment of actinic keratosis with photodynamic therapy. A comparison of the efficacy and safety between the drugs is critical for clinical practice.

The present study aimed to assess whether the Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score may be used to predict whether critically ill patients benefit from continuous blood purification (CBP) treatment. A total of 115 critically ill patients were retrospectively reviewed and grouped according to their baseline APACHE II scores. Each group was further divided into 2 groups based on whether they received CBP or not.

Eukaryotic initiation factor 5A2 and human digestive system neoplasms.

World J Gastrointest Oncol

June 2019

Department of General Surgery, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100730, China.

Eukaryotic initiation factor 5A2 (eIF5A2), as one of the two isoforms in the family, is reported to be a novel oncogenic protein that is involved in multiple aspects of many types of human cancer. Overexpression or gene amplification of has been demonstrated in many cancers. Accumulated evidence shows that eIF5A2 initiates tumor formation, enhances cancer cell growth, increases cancer cell metastasis, and promotes treatment resistance through multiple means, including inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition, cytoskeletal rearrangement, angiogenesis, and metabolic reprogramming.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common esophageal disorder. Transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA), as a needleless method of electroacupuncture (EA) has been reported to improve hypotensive lower esophageal sphincters pressure (LESP) in GERD. Synchronized TEA (STEA) with inspiration has been revealed to be more effective than TEA in enhancing vagal tone.

C-terminal truncation exacerbates the aggregation and cytotoxicity of α-Synuclein: A vicious cycle in Parkinson's disease.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

December 2018

Tongji School of Pharmacy, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430030, China. Electronic address:

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease which usually associates with neuroinflammation. The main pathological characteristics of PD are dopaminergic neurons death and the presence of Lewy bodies which are composed of aggregated α-synuclein (α-Syn). Truncated forms of α-Syn are found in the brain of PD patients, and account for 10-30% of total synuclein in Lewy bodies.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects and mechanisms of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) and additive effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on colonic inflammation in a rodent model of IBD. Chronic inflammation in rats was induced by intrarectal TNBS (2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid). The rats were then treated with sham ES (electrical stimulation), VNS, or VNS + EA for 3 wk.
