Prognostic predictive modeling of non-small cell lung cancer associated with cadmium-related pathogenic genes.

Comput Biol Chem

August 2024

School of Public Health, Wuhan University, 115 Donghu Road, Wuhan, Hubei Province 430071, China. Electronic address:

Persistent exposure to low-dose of cadmium is strongly linked to both the development and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), yet the precise molecular mechanism behind this relationship remains uncertain. In this study, cadmium-related pathogenic genes (CRPGs) in NSCLC were identified via differential expression analysis. NSCLC patient clusters related to CRPGs were constructed through univariate Cox and K-means clustering algorithms.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied COVID-19 patients in Wuhan who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) two years after the pandemic began.
  • They found that PTSD patients had more sleep problems and emotional issues compared to those without PTSD.
  • The study showed that the mental health issues of these patients did not improve just with time, and patients who were more severely affected by COVID-19 had worse sleep and mental health problems.

Efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation versus surgical sympathectomy in palmar hyperhidrosis.

Sci Rep

April 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University, No. 57 People Avenue South, Zhanjiang, 524001, Guangdong, China.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) comparative efficacy of treatments using video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VATS) in the long term remains uncertain in patients with palmar hyperhidrosis (PHH). This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of RFA and VATS in patients with PHH. We recruited patients aged ≥ 14 years with diagnosed PHH from 14 centres in China.

We propose a novel approach for predicting stress severity by measuring sleep phasic heart rate variability (HRV) using a smart device. This device can potentially be applied for stress self-screening in large populations. Using a Holter electrocardiogram (ECG) and a Huawei smart device, we conducted 24-h dual recordings of 159 medical workers working regular shifts.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which accounts for a high proportion of oral cancers, is characterized by high aggressiveness and rising incidence. Lysine acetylation is associated with cancer pathogenesis. Lysine acetylation-related genes (LARGs) are therapeutic targets and potential prognostic indicators in various tumors, including oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Objectives: Numerous stress management interventions have been implemented in the workplace, but few are adapted to the healthcare setting. Due to the nature of their jobs, healthcare workers (HCWs) may find it difficult to adopt recommended stress management strategies. We present the protocol for a 12-week personalized stress management intervention among HCWs to change their behavior as well as improve physiological/psychological outcomes.

Metabolomic analysis of gut metabolites in patients with colorectal cancer: Association with disease development and outcome.

Oncol Lett

August 2023

Institute of Infection, Immunology and Tumor Microenvironment, Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Occupational Hazard Identification and Control, School of Medicine, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei 430065, P.R. China.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading global malignancies with low 5-year survival and high mortality rates. Despite extensive research, the precise role of gut metabolites in CRC development and clinical outcomes remains unclear, while its elucidation may aid the development of improved clinical diagnosis and treatment options. In the present study, targeted metabolomic analysis was conducted on fecal samples from 35 patients with CRC, 37 patients with colorectal adenoma and 30 healthy controls (HC) to identify metabolite biomarkers.

Cerebral ischemic stroke (CIS) has become the second leading cause of death worldwide, which is largely related to cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (CIRI). Surgical intervention is a reliable treatment for CIS, which predictably causes cerebral reperfusion. Therefore, the choice of anesthetic drugs has important clinical significance.

Rationale: Approximately 0.001% of patients with cancer have paraneoplastic nerve system syndrome, which can affect the central nervous system, neuromuscular junction, or peripheral nervous system. Although myasthenia gravis (MG) may exist as a thymic paraneoplastic syndrome (PNPS), its association with primary lung cancer remains unknown.

A novel nanocomposite film composed of gold nanoparticles and acetylene black-dihexadecyl phosphate was fabricated and modified on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode through a simple and controllable dropping and electropolymerization method. The nanocomposite film electrode showed a good electrocatalytic response to the oxidation of homocysteine and can work as an amperometric biomedical sensor for homocysteine. With the aid of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray technology and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the sensing interface was characterized, and the sensing mechanism was discussed.

Morphometric Changes of Osteocyte Lacunar in Diabetic Pig Mandibular Cancellous Bone.

Biomolecules

December 2022

School of Mechanical, Medical and Process Engineering, Center of Biomedical Technology, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD 4059, Australia.

Osteocytes play an important role in bone metabolism. The interactions of osteocytes with the surrounding microenvironment can alter cellular and lacunar morphological changes. However, objective quantification of osteocyte lacunae is challenging due to their deep location in the bone matrix.

Background: Although numerous studies have reported the association between histological types and the prognosis of IA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, few studies have deeply investigated the impact of pathology on the outcome of NSCLC patients. In this study, we comprehensively explored whether the type of histology influenced the outcome of IA-stage NSCLC patients.

Methods: The study population was obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, which is supported by the National Cancer Institute of the United States.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive weakness and muscular atrophy in the upper or lower limbs, ultimately leading to paralysis and death. Genetic studies have demonstrated that mutation in the gene encoding fused in sarcoma (FUS) is an uncommon cause of ALS. Here, we report a case of a 31-year-old Asian man with ALS with rare onset of dropped-head syndrome.
