Background: In the intensive care unit (ICU), the incidence of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is relatively high and is associated with various adverse clinical outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to identify simple and practical indicators to assess the mortality risk in ICU patients with IDA. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the Neutrophil Percentage-to-Albumin Ratio (NPAR) levels in patients with IDA in the ICU and their all-cause mortality at 30 and 365 days.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between unintentional weight loss and 30-day mortality in sepsis patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). A retrospective cohort study sepsis patients in the ICU was conducted using data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database, involving 1842 sepsis patients in the ICU. We utilized multivariate Cox regression analysis to evaluate the association between unintentional weight loss and the risk of 30-day mortality.

Background: The global burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and colorectal cancer (CRC) continues to rise. Observational studies have suggested a link between T2D and an elevated risk of CRC. However, these studies are often susceptible to confounding factors and reverse causation, leading to inconsistent findings.

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae does not produce β-lactamases, and its reduced susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics is predominantly caused by mutations of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). However, mechanisms of non-PBP mutation-related β-lactam antibiotic resistance in pneumococcal strains remain poorly characterized.

Methods: Susceptibility of S.

Most patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ultimately experience tumor progression after first-line systemic therapies. Systemic therapy is generally recommended as second-line treatment for advanced HCC in the major guidelines. Combining apatinib with hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) likely drives synergistic activity on advanced HCC with extrahepatic metastasis.

In this study, nitrogen-sulfur codoped carbon quantum dots (N-S/CQDs) with various functions and properties were synthesized through a one-step method utilizing citric acid and cysteine as reaction substrates. The fluorescence of N-S/CQDs can be specifically quenched by permanganate ion (MnO ), and the quenched fluorescence can be recovered by the presence of reduced glutathione (GSH). A fluorescence sensing system based on N-S/CQDs@MnO was developed and successfully applied for the determination of GSH in pharmaceutical preparations.

August 2024

Department of Hematology, the First Hospital of Putian City, Putian 351100, China School of Clinical Medicine, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou 350000, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 67-year-old man with a history of thymoma and lung cancer was diagnosed with pure white cell aplasia (PWCA) after extensive testing ruled out other blood disorders.
  • - Initial treatment with G-CSF for PWCA did not work, but cyclosporine successfully increased his white blood cell count, peaking by the 8th day post-thymectomy.
  • - Unfortunately, the patient experienced a PWCA recurrence linked to a COVID-19 infection 40 days after surgery, which ultimately led to severe infection and his passing.

Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) hold critical importance due to their notable function in developing Gastric Cancer (GC), which is a malignancy with the third most frequent occurrence worldwide. The aim of this study was to see if circRNA_0044516 would control GC cell proliferation and establish more effective therapeutic strategies.

Methods: In GC tissues or cells, quantitative Real‑Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed for the detection of the expression of circRNA_100349, Insulin-like Growth Factor II (IGF2), and miR-218-5p.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients who experience drug resistance that is not dependent on the BCR::ABL1 mutation, aiming to uncover the underlying mechanisms of this resistance to improve treatment strategies.
  • Researchers conducted RNA sequencing to compare long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression between patients who achieve deep molecular response (DMR) after treatment and those who do not (non-DMR).
  • The analysis revealed distinct lncRNA profiles linked to drug resistance, indicating that overexpression of certain lncRNAs could play a role in TKI resistance among CML patients, leading to further investigation into potential therapeutic targets.

J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis

November 2024

Department of Neurology, the First People's Hospital of Foshan, Foshan 528000, China; Department of Neurology, Shun De Hospital of Jinan University, Foshan 528306, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: Symtomatic hemorrhagic transformation(sHT) was defined as any intracerebral hemorrhage that combined with clinical deterioration. While recent studies showed low rates of sHT in large core ischemic strokes treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), the specific impact of core size on overall hemorrhagic transformation (HT) remains unclear. We aim to investigate the relationship between ischemic core size and development of HT post thrombectomy.
