Efficacy of three predictive models for deep vein thrombosis in patients with lumbar disc herniation.

Objective: To develop predictive models for assessing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk among lumbar disc herniation (LDH) patients and evaluate their performances.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 798 LDH patients treated at the First Hospital of Hebei Medical University from January 2017 to December 2023. The patients were divided into a training set (n = 558) and a test set (n = 240) using computer-generated random numbers in a ratio of 7:3.

Diagnostic value of combined detection of AKP, TSGF, and LDH for pediatric osteosarcoma: a case-control study.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum alkaline phosphatase (AKP), tumor-supplied growth factor group (TSGF), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) for pediatric osteosarcoma.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data from 81 pediatric osteosarcoma patients (osteosarcoma group) and 63 patients with benign bone tumors (benign bone tumor group) admitted to Yantaishan Hospital from February 2023 to November 2023 was conducted. Basic and clinical data differences between the two groups of children were compared.

Electrophysiological Characteristics and Ablation Outcomes in Patients With Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia.

Background: Catheter ablation of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) that trigger polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (PVT) or ventricular fibrillation has been reported as a novel therapy to reduce the syncope events in patients with catecholaminergic PVT, whereas the long-term ablation outcome and its value in improving exercise-induced ventricular arrhythmias remain unclear.

Methods And Results: Fourteen consecutive selected patients with catecholaminergic PVT (mean±SD age, 16±6 years; 43% male patients) treated with maximum β-blockers with no possibility of adding flecainide were prospectively enrolled for catheter ablation. The primary end point was syncope recurrence, and the secondary end point was the reduction of the ventricular arrhythmia score during exercise testing.

ANP32B promotes lung cancer progression by regulating VDAC1.

It has been reported before that acidic leucine-rich nuclear phosphoprotein 32 family member B (ANP32B) plays roles in many cancers, yet no report of its role in lung cancer exists. In this study, we documented an elevation of ANP32B within lung cancer tissues and cells. Knockdown of ANP32B hindered the proliferation as well as migration of lung cancer cells, whereas overexpression of ANP32B helps to promote the malignant progression of lung cancer.

Association of dyslipidemia and hypoxemia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: Studies have shown that dyslipidemia may contribute to chronic tissue hypoxia. However, it remains unclear whether dyslipidemia affects chronic hypoxia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Therefore, from a clinical practice perspective, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dyslipidemia on chronic hypoxia in OSAHS patients.

Objective: To investigate the small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and to evaluate the intestinal barrier function in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients treated with mesalazine and rifaximin.

Methods: 96 patients undergoing the methane-hydrogen breath test in our hospital from January 2018 to January 2020 were enrolled in the study group, and 40 healthy persons were enrolled in the control group during this period. The SIBO positive rate of the two groups were collected and compared.

Selective and sensitive visible-light-prompt photoelectrochemical sensor of paracetamol based on BiWO modified with Bi and copper sulfide.

Paracetamol (PA) is a ubiquitous non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, mainly used to treat headaches, arthritis and osteoarthritis and other diseases. In this work, a novel label free photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on Bi-CuS/BiWO has been developed for the detection of PA, which was fabricated by a simple two-step hydrothermal process. It was found that Bi-CuS/BiWO with a CuS/BiWO heterojunction and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi possesses enhanced charge transfer and absorption wavelengths under visible light, particularly when compared to pristine BiWO films, thus producing an increase in the observed photocurrent.

Background Arginine vasopressin dependent antidiuresis plays a key role in water-sodium retention in heart failure. In recent years, the role of glucocorticoids in the control of body fluid homeostasis has been extensively investigated. Glucocorticoid deficiency can activate V2R (vasopressin receptor 2), increase aquaporins expression, and result in hyponatremia, all of which can be reversed by glucocorticoid supplement.

Effect of whey protein on blood pressure in pre- and mildly hypertensive adults: A randomized controlled study.

In China, the frequency of mild hypertension cases remains prevalently high. Meanwhile, diets containing functional ingredients that control blood pressure have received considerable attention. In this randomized, controlled intervention study, 65 participants were randomly assigned to consume 30 g of whey protein or maltodextrin daily for 12 weeks.

Dynamaic changes of proliferation and apoptosis in rat retina development.

Precise coordination of cell proliferation and apoptosis is essential for proper organ morphogenesis and function during mammalian development. The retina is a part of the central nervous system, with a function in capture and conversion of light particles into nerve signals. However, the dynamical changes of cell proliferation and apoptosis during the retinal development is unclear.

Familial progressive hyper- and hypopigmentation: a report on a Chinese family and evidence for genetic heterogeneity.

Background: Familial progressive hyper- and hypopigmentation (FPHH) is a rare genodermatosis that is characterized by diffuse hyper- and hypopigmented spots on the skin and mucous membranes. It is caused by a pathogenic mutation of the KITLG gene.

Objectives: To investigate the clinical features and mutation of the KITLG gene in a Chinese family with FPHH.

Therapeutic effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells transplantation on hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

Objective: Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) hold substantial promise for the treatment of ischemic neurological disease, but few clinical data are currently available about its therapeutic effects in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). This study is to evaluate the effects of hUC-MSCs transplantation on patients with HIE. Methods A total 22 patients with HIEwere randomly divided into hUC-MSCs transplantation group (n = 12) and control group (n = 10).

Down-regulation of microRNA-184 contributes to the development of cyanotic congenital heart diseases.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the roles of miR-184 in adaptation of hypoxic cardiomyocytes, as well as to elucidate the possible mechanisms of miR-184 in the development of cyanotic congenital heart diseases (CHD).

Materials And Methods: We conducted quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to determine the expression of miR-184 in patients with cyanotic cardiac defects. The embryonic rat ventricular myocardial H9c2 cells were transfected with miR-184 inhibitor and negative scramble RNA.

Individualized treatment strategies and predictors of virological response for chronic hepatitis C: a multicenter prospective study from China.

Combination therapy comprising pegylated interferon-alpha (PegIFNα) and ribavirin (RBV) has been the standard of care for the chronic hepatitis C patients for more than a decade. Recently, direct antiviral agents show better efficacy, tolerance, and shorter treatment duration. However, the prohibitive costs of the regimens limit their use in developing countries where most of the HCV infection exists.

KCNA5 gene polymorphism associate with idiopathic atrial fibrillation.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between KCNA5 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and idiopathic atrial fibrillation (IAF).

Methods: A case-control study was conducted, including 282 cases of IAF patients and 300 cases of age and sex-matched normal controls; gene sequencing method was used to detect the distribution of KCNA5 SNP (rs3741930 and rs1056468) in the two groups. The IAF patients were divided into two groups based on the different genotypes of rs1056468 and rs3741930; differences in clinical parameters between the two groups of patients were compared.

Budesonide ameliorates lung function of the cigarette smoke-exposed rats through reducing matrix metalloproteinase-1 content.

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate an effect of inhaled budesonide on cigarette smoke-exposed lungs with a possible mechanism involved in the event.

Methods: Rats were exposed to air (control) and cigarette smoke (smoking) in presence and absence of budesonide. Inflammatory cell count in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), lung function testing, mean liner intercept (MLI) in lung tissue, mean alveolar number (MAN) and a ratio of bronchial wall thickness and external diameter (BWT/D) were determined in the grouped rats, respectively.

Familial clustering of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren in northern China.

Background: We aimed to study the prevalence of overweight and obesity and to assess its familial clustering among schoolchildren in northern China.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 95,292 schoolchildren in northern China to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity. A group of overweight and obese children (n = 450) was selected using a cluster sampling method.
