Peripheral nerve injuries are common and can cause catastrophic consequences. Although peripheral nerves have notable regenerative capacity, full functional recovery is often challenging due to a number of factors, including age, the type of injury, and delayed healing, resulting in chronic disorders that cause lifelong miseries and significant financial burdens. Fluorescence imaging, among the various techniques, may be the key to overcome these restrictions and improve the prognosis because of its feasibility and dynamic real-time imaging.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is emerging as a target to beat obesity through the dissipation of chemical energy to heat. However, the molecular mechanisms of brown adipocyte thermogenesis remain to be further elucidated. Here, we show that KCTD10, a member of the polymerase delta-interacting protein 1 family, was reduced in BAT by cold stress and a β3 adrenoceptor agonist.

Melanoma is a type of cancer with a relatively poor prognosis. The development of immunotherapy for the treatment of patients with melanoma has drawn considerable attention in recent years. It is of great clinical significance to identify novel promising prognostic biomarkers and to explore their roles in the immune microenvironment.

Background: Lead (Pb) has become one of the most dangerous metals to human health, especially to the nervous system as its persistent accumulation and high toxicity. However, how the gut microbiota influence the Pb-related neurotoxicity remains unclear. The aim of our study was to explore the link among Pb exposure, behavior changes, and gut microbiota.

Objective: Del Nido cardioplegia solution provides a depolarized hyperkalemic arrest lasting up to 60 minutes. Single-dose del Nido cardioplegia solution may offer an alternative myocardial protection strategy to conventional whole blood cardioplegia following acute aortic dissection surgery.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 122 consecutive patients with acute aortic dissection undergoing arch reconstruction surgery procedure with cardioplegia arrest from January 2017 to December 2019.

Background: Age-related loss of the muscle mass is linked to obesity and diabetes because the muscle is the major site for fat oxidation which is influenced by exercise. We aimed to explore the association between fat oxidation rates (FORs) and exercise intensity during age-related muscle loss.
Methods: A total of 224 healthy Chinese men aged 23-92 years were recruited.

In the growing skeleton, angiogenesis is intimately coupled with osteogenesis. Chronic, high doses of glucocorticoids (GCs) are associated with decreased bone vasculature and induce osteoporosis and growth failure. The mechanism of GC-suppression of angiogenesis and relationship to osteoporosis and growth retardation remains largely unknown.

Thyroid cancers are the most common malignancy of the endocrine system; however, there is no reliable blood biomarkers for thyroid cancer diagnosis and even for aggressive and nonaggressive thyroid cancers as well as benign nodule discrimination. The present study is aimed at evaluating whether circulating microRNA (miRNA) can differentiate aggressive and nonaggressive thyroid cancer from benign thyroid nodules. In this study, we performed a multiphase, case-control study to screen serum miRNA expression profile in 100 patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), 15 patients with aggressive medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), 91 patients with benign nodules, and 89 healthy controls using TaqMan low-density array followed by extensive reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR validation.

Perirenal adipose tissue (PAT) has been implicated in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is higher in PAT compared with that in back subcutaneous adipose tissue (bSAT). The aim of the present study was to determine UCP1 expression in different parts of PAT and to analyze the correlation between UCP1 expression in PAT and RCC.

Survival of chronic diseases in childhood is often achieved utilizing glucocorticoids, but comes with significant side effects, including glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO). Knowledge of the mechanism of GIO is limited to the adult skeleton. We explored the effect of genetic loss and inhibition of cathepsin K (Ctsk) as a potential treatment target in a young GIO mouse model as genetic loss of cathepsin K results in a mild form of osteopetrosis secondary to impaired osteoclast bone resorption with maintenance of bone formation.

Calorie restriction (CR) increases average and maximum lifespan and exhibits an apparent beneficial impact on age-related diseases. Several studies have shown that CR initiated either in middle or old age could improve ischemic tolerance and rejuvenate the aging heart; however, the data are not uniform when initiated in young. The accurate time to initiate CR providing maximum benefits for cardiac remodeling and function during aging remains unclear.

Objective: To investigate dynein, axonemal, heavy chain 1 (DNAH1) gene mutations that may be associated with dysplasia of the sperm fibrous sheath (DFS) and infertility in the Han Chinese population.
Design: Dysfunction of DNAH1 is known to cause multiple morphologic abnormalities of the flagella (MMAF), DFS, and infertility. Whole-exome sequencing was performed in DFS subjects and the healthy control subjects.

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging biomarkers for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, a comprehensive characterization of the serum miRNA profile in patients with T2DM-associated microvascular disease (T2DMC) has rarely been reported. In this study, we obtained serum samples from 184 T2DM patients (92 with microvascular complications and 92 free of complications) and 92 age/gender-matched controls.

Mammary fat is the main composition of breast, and is the most probable candidate to affect tumor behavior because the fat produces hormones, growth factors and adipokines, a heterogeneous group of signaling molecules. Gene expression profiling and functional characterization of mammary fat in Chinese women has not been reported. Thus, we collected the mammary fat tissues adjacent to breast tumors from 60 subjects, among which 30 subjects had breast cancer and 30 had benign lesions.

Long-term glucocorticoid (GC) treatment induces central fat accumulation and metabolic dysfunction. We demonstrate that microRNA-27b (miR-27b) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of GC-induced central fat accumulation. Overexpression of miR-27b had the same effects as dexamethasone (DEX) treatment on the inhibition of brown adipose differentiation and the energy expenditure of primary adipocytes.
