Article Synopsis
  • Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a serious risk after gynecological surgeries in the lithotomy position, which can lead to permanent nerve damage or loss of limbs if not treated quickly.
  • A case study involved a 41-year-old woman who developed ACS after a laparoscopic myomectomy, experiencing severe pain and swelling in her legs hours post-surgery, ultimately requiring emergency surgery.
  • The study emphasizes the need for gynecologists to recognize ACS symptoms early to avoid complications, particularly after long surgeries with patients in the lithotomy position.

Introduction: COVID-19 is highly heterogeneous, ranging from cases with mild disease with an almost asymptomatic carrier to severe cases, in which the disease evolves rapidly. A better understanding of monocyte response during SARS-CoV-2 infection would highlight potential biomarkers and establish other possible approaches for severe cases.

Methods: The study group consisted of 32 COVID-19 patients and 18 health controls from June 2023 to March 2024.

N6-methyladenosine RNA modification promotes Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus infection.

PLoS Pathog

November 2024

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Infection and Immunity, MOE Key Laboratory of Geriatric Diseases and Immunology, The Forth Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Institutes of Biology and Medical Sciences, Suzhou Medical College of Soochow University, Suzhou, China.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV), a novel bunyavirus primarily transmitted by Haemaphysalis longicornis, induces severe disease with a high mortality rate. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a prevalent internal chemical modification in eukaryotic mRNA that has been reported to regulate viral infection. However, the role of m6A modification during SFTSV infection remains elusive.

Dimethyl fumarate ameliorates chronic graft-versus-host disease by inhibiting Tfh differentiation via Nrf2.

Leukemia

November 2024

National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, Jiangsu Institute of Hematology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Institute of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Collaborative Innovation Center of Hematology, Soochow University, Suzhou, China.

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), characterized by chronic tissue inflammation and fibrosis involving multiple organs, remains a major complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an anti-inflammatory drug approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and psoriasis. We previously reported that DMF effectively inhibits acute GVHD (aGVHD) while preserving the graft-versus-leukemia effect.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) may negatively affect the metabolic health of offspring, and this study created a mouse model to explore the mechanisms behind this issue.
  • Increased expression of the protein ARRDC3 in the offspring's livers was linked to insulin resistance, while key proteins in the insulin signaling pathway showed reduced activity, indicating disrupted glucose metabolism.
  • Administering L-T4 during pregnancy was found to improve insulin sensitivity and restore normal signaling in the offspring, highlighting a potential treatment strategy to prevent metabolic issues related to maternal SCH.

Enhancing S-nitrosoglutathione reductase decreases S-nitrosylation of ERO1α and reduces neuronal death in secondary traumatic brain injury.

Nitric Oxide

February 2025

Department of Neurosurgery & Brain and Nerve Research Laboratory, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215006, China; Institute of Stroke Research, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215006, China. Electronic address:

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has the highest incidence of all common neurological disorders, along with high mortality and disability rates. Pathological conversion of excess nitric oxide (NO) to S-nitrosoglutathion (GSNO) after TBI leads to high S-nitrosylation of intracellular proteins, causing nitrative stress. GSNO reductase (GSNOR) plays an important role by regulating GSNO and SNO-proteins (PSNOs) and as a redox regulator of the nervous system.

Modified multiscale Renyi distribution entropy for short-term heart rate variability analysis.

BMC Med Inform Decis Mak

November 2024

College of Information and Network Engineering, Anhui Science and Technology University, Bengbu, 233000, China.

Background: Multiscale sample entropy (MSE) is a prevalent complexity metric to characterize a time series and has been extensively applied to the physiological signal analysis. However, for a short-term time series, the likelihood of identifying comparable subsequences decreases, leading to higher variability in the Sample Entropy (SampEn) calculation. Additionally, as the scale factor increases in the MSE calculation, the coarse-graining process further shortens the time series.

Efficient Biomarker for Immunotherapy: Measuring Broad Clones Effector Tumor Antigen-Specific T Cells in the Blood of Esophageal Cancer Patients.

Anal Chem

December 2024

Department of Pharmaceutics, College of Pharmaceutical Science, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu 215123, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer results from interactions between tumor cells and the immune response specific to those tumors, but accurate measurement of this response is still lacking.
  • Immunotherapy aims to activate or reactivate specific T cells known as effector tumor antigen-specific T cells (ETASTs), and their levels in the blood are crucial for treatment effectiveness.
  • Using nanoparticles to load tumor antigens can help activate and measure ETASTs, providing a reliable biomarker that correlates with the success of immunotherapy, especially in esophageal cancer patients.
