Background: Native cartilage has low capacity for regeneration because it has very few progenitor cells. Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) and human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) have been employed as promising sources of stem cells for cartilage injury repair. Reproduction of hyaline cartilage from MSCs remains a challenging endeavor.

Gastric cancer (GC) has a poor prognosis and high mortality because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Targeted therapeutics are considered an important class for advanced GC treatment. However, the fewer effective therapeutic targets and the poor coverage of the GC population limit the use of GC targeted therapies.

Background: Inflammation and nutrition are strongly linked to respiratory diseases, but the link between inflammation and nutrition-based indicators and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its mortality has not been reported.
Methods: We recruited adults no younger than 20 years old from the NHANES 1999-2018. Inflammation and nutrition-based indicators included NAR, PNI, MAR, RAR, HALP, and ALI.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has played a positive role in preventing and controlling the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic. Qingjie formula (QJF) developed to prevent COVID-19 is widely used in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, China. However, the biological active ingredients of QJF and their specific mechanisms for preventing COVID-19 remain unclear.

Ultrasound (US) based radiomics is susceptible to variations in scanners, sonographers. To retrospectively investigate the feasibility of an adapted cycle generative adversarial networks (CycleGAN) in the style transfer to improve US based radiomics in the prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) with images from multiple scanners for patients with early cervical cancer (ECC). The CycleGAN was firstly trained to transfer paired US phantom images from one US device to another one; the model was then further trained and tested with clinical US images of ECC by transferring images from four US devices to one specific device; finally, the adapted model was tested with its effects on the radiomics feature harmonization and accuracy of LNM prediction in US based radiomics for ECC patients.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of intraoperative human papillomavirus (IOP-HPV) testing for the prediction of postoperative treatment failure in patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) undergoing loop electrosurgical excisional procedure (LEEP).
Methods: A total of 114 women diagnosed with HSIL by biopsy and/or endocervical curettage who underwent LEEP were included in a prospective cohort study. IOP-HPV testing was performed immediately after the procedure.

The fingerprint features of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) are intricately linked to bowel damage (BD) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). We aimed to develop a VAT fingerprint index (VAT-FI) using radiomics and deep learning features extracted from computed tomography (CT) images of 1,135 CD patients across six hospitals (training cohort, = 600; testing cohort, = 535) for predicting BD, and to compare it with a subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)-FI. VAT-FI exhibited greater predictive accuracy than SAT-FI in both training (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.

Unlabelled: Carbapenem-resistant (CRKP) and (CREC) are frequently detected in clinical settings, restricting the use of carbapenems. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies to address infections caused by CRKP and CREC. This study investigated the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-inflammatory effects of the cationic antimicrobial peptide Hs02, along with its potential antimicrobial mechanisms against CRKP and CREC.

To address the pressing challenge of antibiotic resistance, particularly the robust defense mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) against conventional antibiotics, this study employs nanotechnology to enhance antimicrobial efficacy while ensuring good biocompatibility with the host. In this study, gold nanoparticles were chemically decorated with eugenol, a phenol-rich natural compound, using a one-pot synthesis method.

Objective: To investigate the association between preoperative nutritional scores and moderate-to-severe acute kidney injury (AKI) after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and the predictive significance of nutritional indices for moderate to severe AKI.
Methods: This study retrospectively included older patients underwent CABG surgery from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) database. Nutritional scores were calculated by the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), respectively.

Implantable catheters are susceptible to severe complications due to non-specific protein adhesion on their surfaces. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings, the gold standard for resistance to non-specific protein adhesion, present a challenge in achieving high-density grafting, which significantly restricts their use as anti-biofouling coatings. Herein, we exploited the strong interaction between polyphenols (PCs) and polycations (K6-PEG) to graft PEG onto the surface of PC-Cu (A network of metal polyphenols composed of proanthocyanidins and metal copper ions, with expectation for the coating with excellent resistance to non-specific protein adhesion (PC-Cu@K6-PEG).

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by its rapid progression and aggressive nature, with limited effective therapeutic interventions currently available. Cyclovirobuxine D (CVB-D), a natural alkaloid extracted from the traditional Chinese herb Buxus sinica, is renowned for its cardioprotective and anti-ischemic effects, demonstrating notable anti-cancer properties. Nevertheless, the anti-tumor effects of CVB-D on TNBC remain unverified.
