Menopause is a normal physiological process accompanied by changes in various physiological states. The incidence of vascular calcification (VC) increases each year after menopause and is closely related to osteoporosis (OP). Although many studies have investigated the links between VC and OP, the interaction mechanism of the two under conditions of estrogen loss remains unclear.

Betaine prevents cognitive dysfunction by suppressing hippocampal microglial activation in chronic social isolated male mice.

Phytother Res

October 2023

Clinical Anatomy and Reproductive Medicine Application Institute, Hengyang Medical School, University of South China, Hengyang, Hunan, China.

Chronic social isolation (SI) stress, which became more prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributes to abnormal behavior, including mood changes and cognitive impairment. Known as a functional nutrient, betaine has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in vivo. However, whether betaine can alleviate the abnormal behavior induced by chronic SI in mice remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the connection between ACE I/D gene polymorphisms and IgA nephropathy (IgAN), which had previously shown conflicting results.
  • A total of 27 studies involving over 2,500 IgAN patients and around 3,600 controls were examined, revealing that specific ACE genotypes and alleles (DD and II) were linked to increased susceptibility to IgAN, especially in Asian populations.
  • The research concluded that while ACE I/D gene polymorphisms affect IgAN risk and progression in Asians, no such association was found in Caucasians.

Electronic address:

Background: Anthracycline are inhibitors of topoisomerase II leading to DNA double strand breaks, and it is widely used for treatment of breast cancer. eIF3a is the largest subunit of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) and highly expressed in breast cancer. In this study, we investigated the role of eIF3a in DSB DNA repair and the response of breast cancer patients to anthracycline-based chemotherapy.

Siglec15 is an emerging target for normalization cancer immunotherapy. However, pan-cancer anti-Siglec15 treatment is not yet validated and the potential role of Siglec15 in bladder cancer (BLCA) remains elusive. We comprehensively evaluated the expression pattern and immunological role of Siglec15 using pan-cancer analysis based on RNA sequencing data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common hereditary tumor that is often fatal. Its pathogenesis involves multiple genes, including circular RNAs (circRNAs). Notably, circRNAs constitute a new class of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) with a covalently closed loop structure and have been characterized as stable, conserved molecules that are abundantly expressed in tissue/development-specific patterns in eukaryotes.

Excessive accumulation of cholesterol in β cells initiates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and associated apoptosis. We have reported that excessive uptake of cholesterol by MIN6 cells decreases the expression of secretagogin (SCGN) and then attenuates insulin secretion. Here, we aimed to determine whether cholesterol-induced SCGN decrease is involved in the modulation of ER stress and apoptosis in pancreatic β cells.

Purpose: Breast cancer accounts for a significant proportion of cancer burden among women world over. Concerning breast cancer treatment, there are only few chemotherapeutic agents available, which also have serious side effects. The present study was thus designed to explore in vitro the antitumor effects of ambrosin sesquiterpene lactone against human drug-resistant breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths globally because of high metastasis and recurrence rates. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms of HCC recurrence and metastasis and developing effective targeted therapies are expected to improve patient survival. The promising anti-cancer agents for the treatment of hematological malignancies, histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs), have limited effects against epithelial cell-derived cancers, including HCC, the mechanisms involved have not been elucidated.

The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan City People's Hospital, Qingyuan, Guangdong Province, P.R. China.

Background: Hypoxia-induced oxidative stress is one of the main mechanisms of myocardial injury, which frequently results in cardiomyocyte death and precipitates life-threatening heart failure. Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol), which is used to sedate patients during surgery, was shown to strongly affect the regulation of physiological processes, including hypoxia-induced oxidative stress. However, the exact mechanism is still unclear.

This study investigated expression of serum miR-27b and miR-451 in patients with congenital heart disease associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (CHD-PAH), and analyzed the risk factors of CHD-PAH. A total of 114 patients with CHD admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of South China were recruited and allocated into a study group (61 patients with PAH) and a control group (53 patients without PAH). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed for the qualification of serum miR-27b and miR-451, and an automatic biochemical analyzer was used for the measurement of biochemical indexes in peripheral blood, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of serum brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA).

The Association Between Heat-Shock Protein Polymorphisms and Prognosis in Lung Cancer Patients Treated With Platinum-Based Chemotherapy.

Front Pharmacol

July 2020

Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Hunan Key Laboratory of Pharmacogenetics, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Objective: Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and the leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. Platinum-based chemotherapy plays an important role in lung cancer treatment, but the therapeutic effect varies from person to person. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) have been reported to be associated with the survival time of lung cancer patients, which may be a potential biomarker in lung cancer treatment.
