(1) Background: Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the primary drugs for treating musculoskeletal pain. However, there are currently no evidence-based recommendations about drug selection, drug administration, drug interactions, and use in special populations or other pharmacology-related content of such medications. To this end, the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Hospital Pharmacy Professional Committee developed multidisciplinary guidelines on using topical NSAIDs to treat musculoskeletal pain.

The number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) was found to increase in patients with breast cancer, but the alteration in EPC function remains to be elusive. We conducted this study to evaluate the number and function of peripheral EPCs of breast cancer patients and its possible underlying mechanism. Besides, the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VCAM-1, IL-6, and IL-34 levels were measured in blood samples and also in vitro in a medium of EPCs.

February 2017

Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yet-sen University, 58 Second Zhongshan Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510080, People's Republic of China.

Background: Cisplatin (DDP)-based chemotherapy is the common first-line therapy for lung cancer. However, their efficacy is often limited by primary drug resistance and/or acquired drug resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of miRNA-146a (miR-146a) in DDP-resistant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), as well as the underlying mechanisms.

MicroRNA controls cancer invasion by governing the expression of gene regulating migration and invasion. Here, we reported a novel regulatory pathway controlled by miR-744-3p, which enhanced expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). We profiled the differential micoRNA expression pattern in LSCC cell lines and normal epithelial cultures derived from the head and neck mucosa using microRNA microarray.

In this study, we investigated the effects of remote ischemic preconditioning on post resuscitation cerebral function in a rat model of cardiac arrest and resuscitation. The animals were randomized into six groups: 1) sham operation, 2) lateral ventricle injection and sham operation, 3) cardiac arrest induced by ventricular fibrillation, 4) lateral ventricle injection and cardiac arrest, 5) remote ischemic preconditioning initiated 90min before induction of ventricular fibrillation, and 6) lateral ventricle injection and remote ischemic preconditioning before cardiac arrest. Reagent of Lateral ventricle injection is neuroglobin antisense oligodeoxynucleotides which initiated 24h before sham operation, cardiac arrest or remote ischemic preconditioning.

Background: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement is a simple, rapid, highly reproducible, and noninvasive method of airway inflammation assessment. Therefore, FeNO is extensively used for the diagnosis and management of asthma. The feasibility of using FeNO as an alternative to conventional pulmonary function test to differentiate patients with bronchiectasis (BE) and bronchial asthma from those with BE only remains unclear.

MicroRNAs exert their functions by mainly regulating coding genes or long non-coding RNA expression. In the present study, we reported that hsa-miR-1 was down-regulated in breast cancer tissues. Restoration of miR-1 in breast cancer cells inhibited proliferation, motility and increased apoptosis in vitro.

Objective: To evaluate if recombinant Trichinella spiralis-53 000 protein (rTsP53) could alleviate liver damage caused by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) via M2 macrophage activation.

Methods: Sixty male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into LPS group, LPS + phosphate buffer saline (PBS) group and rTsP53 intervention group by random number table, with 20 mice in each group. Intraperitoneal injection of 15 μg/kg LPS was performed for all the mice in the three groups after 8 hours of fasting.

Objective: To improve cost-efficiency, discriminant functions in stepwise method was founded for the differential diagnosis of angina pectoris by detecting the serum level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and unstable angina pectoris (UAP).

Methods: Thirty-nine SAP patients and 47 UAP patients were enrolled into the study, while 39 healthy volunteers were enrolled into the controlled group forming the entire set of training samples. The serum levels of hs-CRP, MIF, IL-4 and IL-10 were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Article Synopsis
  • * The results show that 100% of patients with severe reactions (SJS/TEN) carried the HLA-B*1502 allele, significantly higher compared to those who tolerate carbamazepine and healthy individuals.
  • * In contrast, the frequency of the HLA-B*1502 allele in patients with milder reactions (MPE) did not differ significantly from tolerant controls, indicating that the allele is specifically associated with severe adverse reactions.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay as a non-invasive method for diagnosing and monitoring urothelial carcinoma (UC) in the upper urinary tract (UUT). Urine specimens from 21 consecutive patients with UUT-UC and 10 healthy controls were analyzed by means of cytology and FISH. For FISH analysis, labeled probes specific for chromosomes 3, 7, and 17 and for the p16 (9p21) gene were used to assess chromosomal abnormalities indicative of malignancy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the expression of SOCS-1/3 proteins and mRNA in PBMCs of patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and its relation to patient outcomes.
  • Researchers collected blood samples from 32 MODS patients and 24 healthy controls, using specific techniques to isolate and analyze SOCS expression.
  • Results indicated that while SOCS-1 mRNA was similar between groups, SOCS-1 protein levels were higher in MODS patients, and lower levels of SOCS-1 and higher levels of SOCS-3 were linked to worse prognosis in MODS patients.
