The reproductive lifespan of female mammals is determined by the size of the primordial follicle pool, which comprises oocytes enclosed by a layer of flattened pre-granulosa cells. Oocyte differentiation needs acquiring organelles and cytoplasm from sister germ cells in cysts, but the mechanisms regulating this process remain unknown. Previously helicase for meiosis 1 (HFM1) is reported to be related to the development of premature ovarian insufficiency.

Background: Cancer-related fatigue symptoms persist throughout the radiotherapy period in patients with esophageal cancer and show a continuous worsening trend, which seriously affects the quality of survival of patients. Therefore, monitoring patients' fatigue status promptly, recognizing highly fatigued patients, and providing physical and psychological support are essential for improving their quality of life. As a positive psychological trait, self-efficacy can influence the level of fatigue in patients undergoing radiotherapy for esophageal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The transvenous method for treating cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) is complex but can lead to high cure rates with proper blood pressure management.
  • A 55-year-old male with an aneurysm and cerebral AVM underwent a two-stage surgery involving aneurysm embolization and AVM embolization, during which rapid ventricular pacing (RVP) was utilized.
  • RVP was found to create a stable blood flow environment, making it an effective technique for the embolization of cerebral AVM in surgical procedures.*

This study explores the clinical efficacy of intra-articular injection of chitosan combined with low-dose glucocorticoid for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in early and middle stages. The visual analog scale (VAS) score, Lysholm score, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) score, and changes in the levels of inflammatory cytokines IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α in the joint fluid before and after treatment in the 3 groups were compared, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated. All cases were followed up, with a follow-up time of 7 to 12 months, and no lost cases.

The study aims to elucidate the therapeutic mechanism of Baicalin (BAI) in alleviating cartilage injury in osteoarthritic (OA) rat models, concentrating on its regulation of the miR-766-3p/AIFM1 axis. An OA rat model was developed with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT). Interventions comprised of BAI treatment and intra-articular administration of miR-766-3p inhibitor.

Background: Oxidative stress (OS) is involved in the development of diabetes, but the genetic mechanisms are not completely understood. We integrated multi-omics data in order to explore the genetic relations between OS-related genes, diabetes mellitus, and microvascular complications using Mendelian randomization and colocalization analysis.

Methods: Summary-level data related to OS were acquired from respective studies of methylation, expression, and protein abundance quantitative trait loci.

Calcium signaling crosstalk between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, a new drug development strategies of kidney diseases.

Biochem Pharmacol

July 2024

Research Division of Clinical Pharmacology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University & Jiangsu Province Hospital, Nanjing, China; Department of Pharmacy, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Calcium (Ca) acts as a second messenger and constitutes a complex and large information exchange system between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria; this process is involved in various life activities, such as energy metabolism, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Increasing evidence has suggested that alterations in Ca crosstalk between the ER and mitochondria, including alterations in ER and mitochondrial Ca channels and related Ca regulatory proteins, such as sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase (SERCA), inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R), and calnexin (CNX), are closely associated with the development of kidney disease. Therapies targeting intracellular Ca signaling have emerged as an emerging field in the treatment of renal diseases.

ROS-responsive curcumin-encapsulated nanoparticles for AKI therapy promoting lipid degradation in renal tubules.

J Mater Chem B

March 2024

The State Key Laboratory of Functions and Applications of MediEucal Plants, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guizhou Medical University, Guizhou 550025, China.

Lipid accumulation is a factor contributing to the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury (AKI), yet there are currently no approved pharmacotherapies aside from adjuvant therapy. A developed reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive drug delivery system (NPS@Cur) was developed to deliver the autophagy activator curcumin (Cur) in order to alleviate AKI by activating autophagy and promoting lipid droplet degradation. The nanoparticles were shown to be ROS-responsive in the HO medium and demonstrate ROS-responsive uptake in palmitate (PA)-induced oxidative stress-damaged cells.
