Preoperative evaluation of microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma with a radiological feature-based nomogram: a bi-centre study.

BMC Med Imaging

January 2024

Department of Radiology, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Yongan Road 95, West District, Beijing, 100050, China.

Purpose: To develop a nomogram for preoperative assessment of microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on the radiological features of enhanced CT and to verify two imaging techniques (CT and MRI) in an external centre.

Method: A total of 346 patients were retrospectively included (training, n = 185, CT images; external testing 1, n = 90, CT images; external testing 2, n = 71, MRI images), including 229 MVI-negative patients and 117 MVI-positive patients. The radiological features and clinical information of enhanced CT images were analysed, and the independent variables associated with MVI in HCC were determined by logistic regression analysis.

Pathological α-synuclein detected by real-time quaking-induced conversion in synucleinopathies.

Exp Gerontol

March 2024

Department of Neurology, Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, China. Electronic address:

synucleinopathies are diseases characterized by the aggregation of α-synuclein (α-syn), which forms fibrils through misfolding and accumulates in a prion-like manner. To detect the presence of these α-syn aggregates in clinical samples, seed amplification assays (SAAs) have been developed. These SAAs are capable of amplifying the α-syn seeds, allowing for their detection.

Objective: A retrospective study was conducted to compare the mid-term clinical efficacy between percutaneous calcium sulfate injection (PCSI) and localized scrape bone grafting (LSBG) in using titanium elastic nails treat humerus pathologic fractures caused by unicameral bone cysts in children.

Methods: Humerus pathologic fracture patients with unicameral bone cysts in our pediatric orthopedic department from January 2015 to January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups, namely the PCSI group and the LSBG group, based on the type of bone grafting material they received.

Background: Ablation has been recommended by worldwide guidelines as first-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), while evidence regarding its efficacy for primary intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is lacking. We aimed to study the efficacy of ablation in treating iCCA by comparing its prognosis with surgery.

Methods: In this real-world multicenter cohort study from January 2009 to June 2022, 10,441 iCCA patients from ten tertiary hospitals were identified.

This primary objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between serum calcium levels and the occurrence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in stroke patients. We analyzed the clinical data of 10,423 acute stroke patients admitted to the intensive care unit. The association between serum calcium and SCA following an acute stroke was assessed through multivariate logistic regression.

Background: Central venous catheters are widely used in clinical practice, and the incidence of central venous catheter occlusion is between 25 % and 38 %. The turbulence caused by the pulsatile flushing technique is harmful to the vascular endothelium and may lead to phlebitis. The low-speed continuous infusion catheter technique is a new type of continuous infusion that ensures that the catheter is always in a keep-vein-open state by continuous low-speed flushing; hence, avoiding the problem of catheter occlusion.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at several levels, including transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and translational. They have a length of more than 200 nucleotides and cannot code. Many human diseases have been linked to aberrant lncRNA expression, highlighting the need for a better knowledge of disease etiology to drive improvements in diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic methods.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with obstructive sleep apnoea (T2DM-OSA). However, the role of the lncRNA nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (NEAT1) in T2DM-OSA remains unknown. This study aimed to reveal the function of NEAT1 in T2DM-OSA and the underlying mechanism.

The usefulness of contrast echocardiography in the evaluation of cardiac masses: a multicenter study.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

January 2024

Department of Ultrasound, Xiangyang No. 1 People's Hospital, Hubei University of Medicine, No 15, Jiefang Avenue, Xiangyang, 441000, China.

Background: Cardiac masses can encompass a variety of conditions, such as tumors, thrombi, vegetations, calcific lesions, and other rare diseases. Treatment and management of these types of cardiac masses differ considerably. Thus, accurately distinguishing among thrombi, benign tumors, and malignant tumors in the heart is of great importance.

The Hedyotis diffusa-Scutellaria officinalis pair (HD-SB) has therapeutic effects on a variety of cancers. Our study was to explore the mechanism of HD-SB in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A total of 217 active ingredients of HD-SB and 1196 HCC-related targets were reserved from the TCMSP and the SwissTarget Prediction database, and we got 63 intersection targets from GeneCards.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the primary cause of end-stage renal disease, exhibiting high disability and mortality rates. Ferroptosis is vital for the progression of DKD, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of ferroptosis-related genes in DKD and their relationship with the immune and to identify new diagnostic biomarkers to help treat and diagnose DKD.

We constructed biomimetic nanoparticles with biocompatible, tumor-targeting, laser-responsive properties for ferroptosis-induced colorectal cancer chemo-photothermal therapy, with the aim to realize double-hit ferroptosis treatment for colorectal cancer. The nanoparticles were prepared by first loading the chemotherapy drug bufotalin (CS-5) with Prussian blue (PB), then combining a hybridized erythrocyte-tumor membrane (M) with PB@CS-5 to produce PB@CS-5@M. The chemo-photothermal therapy efficiency of PB@CS-5@M was tested by and experiments.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at new ways to test for neuroblastoma (a type of cancer) using certain genes known as NB5 to see if they can help doctors predict how the disease behaves.
  • Researchers collected samples from patients and tested them using a special method called RT-PCR to see how well the NB5 genes were expressed.
  • The results showed that testing bone marrow samples was more accurate in finding the cancer compared to another method called flow cytometry, which helps doctors understand how the disease might progress.
